Course Description
This course covers topics relevant to the practice of roof consulting and related roof activities, including the design, manufacture, installation, observation, inspection and maintenance of roof components and assemblies. It is is targeted at current and prospective roof consultants, roof observers, architects, engineers, contractors, building owners, manufacturer's representatives, students and all other learners already in or planning to enter the building enclosure profession. 

 The course is divided into three one-hour modules:

* The first module, "Decks" addresses the role an function of the roof decks within the roof assembly, the categorization and characteristics of the different types of roof decks, and key design parameters related to each of the main types.

* The second module, "Substrate Board to Cover Board" covers substrate board, air barriers, vapor retarders, insulation and cover board, addressing the function, categorization and design criteria for each of these components. Focus is given to these components into the overall building enclosure to provide thermal and moisture protection.

* The third module, "Protected Membrane Roof (PMR) Assemblies," explains how and why roof components are arranged in specific ways in this assembly, describes the unique characteristics of the roof components as adapted for PMR assemblies and explains the special design consideration of these systems. 

Learning Objectives:
At the end of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  1. Describe the role and main functions of roof decks substrate board, air barriers, vapor retarders, insulation and cover board in roof assemblies. 
  2. Categorize and identify the characteristics of each of these roof components. 
  3. Summarize design considerations for each of these roof components. 
  4. Explain the history of, and rationale for, protected membrane roof assemblies; identify their components and variations; and summarize design considerations, concerns and opportunities related to these roof systems.
