At IRE 2026, MetalForming introduced new equipment designed to help contractors streamline operations and expand capabilities. 

At the 2026 International Roofing Expo, contractors came searching for tools and technology that can help them work smarter, faster and more profitably. I really see the fog lifting,” Steve said, adding that MetalForming’s focus is to keep growing. “By bringing in this new equipment and continuing to enhance our role as a supplier, we're looking to grow our presence regardless of market conditions.”

Find out the top trends inspired by last year’s METALCON!

Each year, it’s exciting to see which new trends emerge from the trade show floor of the biggest shows of the season. This year, the Drexel Metals team was excited to learn about the new products, services and business insights being showcased at METALCON, the largest expo dedicated to the metal industry. Keep reading to learn about their three key takeaways from the event.  

1 - On-site roll forming for smaller-scale projects

When it comes to prioritizing jobsite efficiencies on residential projects (a must in today’s climate), on-site roll forming can support fast and efficient construction. Essentially, on-site roll forming is a manufacturing process that is ideal for smaller-scale projects where large quantities of long-run panels are not needed. The roofing contractor can roll coils into the desired profile and then cut the panels to the exact length needed for the specific roof section.

2 – Specialty prints, finishes and profiles that offer design versatility like never before

With the amount of time and effort being put into manufacturing advances that create a realistic wood grain on metal coil, it’s clear that this trend is here to stay.   

Speaking of the wood-look trend, the board and batten profile was one of the most popular profiles on the show floor. This profile pairs the sought-after rustic appearance of wood with the durability and performance of a metal wall system.

3 – Increased emphasis on energy-efficient design

Whether it’s incorporating solar panels or designing continuous insulation systems, the message at METALCON was clear: designers and project owners are prioritizing strategies that minimize operational carbon emissions. Driven by state-determined standards and individual project goals, now more than ever building professionals are challenged to create aesthetically beautiful exteriors that support reduced energy consumption.  

Insulation (like Drexel Metals’ new roof and wall insulation products that use a polyiso foam core) can play a key part in achieving these goals. In application, these complete systems can improve a building’s thermal performance, reducing the amount of energy required to maintain a comfortable indoor environment. Metal roof panels can also be specified in cool roof colors to reduce the amount of solar radiation they absorb, further contributing to energy efficiency goals.

When it comes to choosing gutters for your next project, seamless gutters offer far superior results compared to prefabricated solutions.  

While the convenience of purchasing prefabricated, mass-produced gutters from the hardware store might be tempting, there are many downsides and risks. Sectional gutters are prone to clogging, or worse, leaking, making them a nuisance to maintain and offer only a short lifespan. On the other hand, seamless gutters produced with a portable rollforming machine offer far superior results, aesthetics and lasting lifespan.  

New Tech Machinery (NTM) manufactured its first portable seamless gutter machine 30 years ago and has been going strong ever since with its Mach II series. With decades of experience helping gutter installers build their businesses, we know how contractors appreciate the advantages of owning a gutter machine they can take anywhere and run custom seamless gutters. 

The bottom line is that using a portable rollformer to manufacture seamless gutters onsite offers significant advantages to gutter contractors and customers alike. So, let’s start by looking at the differences between the DIY-friendly traditional and professionally manufactured seamless gutters. 

Traditional versus seamless gutters 

Traditional or sectional gutters are common and typically installed by do-it-yourselfers and fly-by-night contractors, or “Chuck in a truck.” These prefabricated gutters come in 10’ to 20’ sections, attached by connectors and caps, with droplet outlets intersecting with downspouts. They can be purchased from distributors, manufacturers or a local Home Depot or Lowes. They aren’t as sturdy as seamless gutters, and if not properly installed will sag, clog easily and may even fall apart at the seams. The result is that the homeowner gets stuck with a bad gutter system. 

Pros and cons of traditional gutters 

Pros 

Sectional gutters are common for DIY installation or contractors working for cheap if cost is an issue for the customer.  They’re available in a variety of materials — including aluminum, vinyl, stainless steel and copper — as well as a range of colors. You can cut them to size and slap them on the fascia pretty easily. 

DIY kits are affordable and easy to install, depending on the gutter material and the homeowner’s skills. However, they only come in half-round or K-style, so homes built without fascia boards will require professional installation. 

Cons 

Wherever there are seams, count on some leakage. Because traditional gutters are connected by joints, more water will likely seep through. Also, debris can get caught in the seams, increasing the chances of damage. 

Traditional gutters require frequent maintenance, including repairs and replacement of damaged sections. Depending on the region, hard winters with heavy snow make damage more likely. Plus, they don’t always hold up well in severe storms. Also, sectional gutters only last 10-15 years, compared to seamless gutters, which can last anywhere from 25 to 100 years, depending on the material. So, the homeowner may not save money in the long run, especially if they plan to stay in their home for a number of years. 

DIY gutter installation 

A DIY gutter project may sound easy to some homeowners — simply nailing gutter sections to a fascia board. Plenty of YouTube videos show consumers how to install their own gutters. Keep in mind, the DIY instructors aren’t taking videos of themselves installing for the first time. Chances are, they’re professionals, so they can make it look easier than it is. They may not account for damaged or warped fascia boards and other issues installers run into. 

Any customer weighing traditional gutters vs. seamless should understand that DYI requires a lot of planning and additional investment. They’ll need to know: 

• The length of the gutter run and where the downspouts will be set. 
• Where the water needs to flow to protect the house and property. 
• How to inspect fascia and soffit for rot (removal and replacement may be necessary). 
• The best gutter profile and material for their climate and situation. 
• Where and how to install hangers along the roofline. 
• How to use a hacksaw or tin snip to cut the lengths to size. 
• How to notch the gutter. 
• How to attach the gutter sections with hangers and screws or rivets. 
• How to properly apply a sealant to seal the joints and connections. 
• How to make repairs or replace gutter sections if they become damaged. 

They must also check any local building codes to ensure compliance and should have some basic knowledge of working with roofing materials. Plus, how water can best flow away from the home without damaging the landscape or filling their swimming pool with dirt and debris. 

Seamless gutters are installed by a professional using a portable gutter machine on-site. Depending on the type of gutter, it is generally nailed to the fascia board that runs along the roofline.  Houses with no fascia boards will require a fascia gutter that can hang from the framing that can only be installed by a pro. 

Seamless gutters are custom fitted to the house by a professional who knows where the water needs to flow to protect the home and landscape. They’re not only more functional but they look sleek and, well, seamless. If your customer doesn’t believe there’s a difference, walk them around their block and point out their neighbors’ gutter systems. Chances are, you’ll find some sectionals that show signs of damage, poor installation and hopefully, some excellent examples of seamless gutters. If you can get them to see the difference, seamless gutters sell themselves.

Because gutters produced on a portable rollformer are seamless, they’re less likely to suffer leakage or storm damage, which means they can better protect the structure and property. Also, due to their durability, seamless gutters will often outlast traditional gutters by decades. 

Like their traditional counterparts, seamless gutters come in many materials and colors. However, they offer more profiles than traditional gutters, including K-style, box, fascia and half-round. 

Seamless gutters also present a sleeker overall appearance. Whereas seams tend to sag and leak, seamless gutters retain their shape unless damaged by impact, like a fallen tree. While many customers prefer their gutters to blend into the roofline, those who want a more ornamental look can choose copper, accentuating the roofline while providing a strong, durable gutter. 

Seamless gutters require less maintenance and do a better job of preventing damage to external walls and landscape. Because of the smooth flow of water and fewer seams, they don’t attract as much debris and outside of regular cleanings twice a year, don’t require much upkeep. 

Cons 

As mentioned, seamless gutters cost more. They can’t be purchased for DIY as they are custom-made and installed professionally. That said, they last longer, are more durable and are easier to maintain than traditional gutters. 

If you’re a consumer, it will cost you more to have a professional run and install the gutters. You may have to show your customers the benefits of the pricier seamless gutters. 

Consider your market. One of our Colorado NTM gutter machine owners found his niche market in custom-built homes. They are more likely to pay for seamless gutters made from steel. This means they’ve limited their customer base – not everyone looking for gutters is going to come to them. However, they have generated plenty of business based on their service and reputation. 

Choosing a portable seamless gutter machine 

K-style gutters are standard throughout most of the country. 5” gutters are typical in most states, but areas that experience significant rainfall, such as Florida, lean toward 6” gutters. 

26 gauge is standard for steel gutters, but southern regions that experience severe storms often use a heavier 24 gauge, while in Canada, the lighter 28 gauge is the norm. Aluminum has become popular as it’s durable, can handle a lot of rain and won’t rust like steel; however, steel holds up better in areas that experience hailstorms, and many times is preferred for high-end homes. 

The next step is to compare machines and their components. For example, push-button controls are easier to use than drum switches, which are cheaper but less durable. A computer controller allows you to program the gutter length but will add to the cost of the machine. Each machine offers many options, and it takes a bit of research to determine which is right for you. 

When deciding on the best gutter machine to purchase, consider: 

• Common profiles in your region 
• Who your target customer is and what they prefer 
• Machine’s production speed (fpm) 
• Options and accessories 
• Materials and gauges 
• Size and cost 
• Transportation (truck and trailer) 
• Maintenance and training 

For portable gutter machine manufacturers, KWM and NTM are two of the biggest names. NTM has been around for over 30 years and pioneered polyurethane drive rollers. 

 The 5”/6” combo is the most popular gutter machine, as it offers the most flexibility. If you’re doing residential, a combo machine should cover your jobs. For industrial or commercial work, you may look at a box gutter or a 7” portable gutter machine. 

 Anyone using a portable gutter machine should receive training. New Tech Machinery offers in-house training free with the purchase of a new machine, or on-site training at your facility for a fee. Also, make sure to properly store and maintain your machine. Like any equipment, it can be damaged or rust if left out in the elements. The machine should be kept in a ventilated area indoors or in an enclosed trailer when not in use. 

MACH II 5”, 6” and 5”/6” combo gutter machines

Understand the differences between standing seam metal roof profiles.  

In the metal roofing world, standing seam is a popular option due to its durability, weather resistance and clean aesthetics. Identifiable by the interlocking panels that run vertically from a roof’s edge to eaves, standing seam is used on both residential and commercial buildings. There are generally two types of standing seam metal roofs — snap lock and mechanical seam profiles. Each type has unique design features, installation needs and regulations around them that must be understood before starting a project.

Snap lock versus mechanical seam profiles 

The primary difference between snap lock and mechanical seam panels lies in their installation and seaming methods.  

Snap lock panels have pre-formed edges that snap together without the need for special tools, making installation faster and simpler. They are suitable for roofs with a pitch of 3/12 or greater.  

Mechanical lock panels, on the other hand, require special equipment to crimp the panel edges together, which increases the material and labor costs. However, this crimping process creates a tighter seal, making mechanical seam panels more appropriate for low-slope roofs or harsh weather conditions. They can be installed on roofs with a minimum slope of .5/12, depending on the seam height and specific product design. 

Two types of mechanical seam panel profiles 

1 - Single lock profiles: Single lock refers to a 90-degree single fold in the seam. It’s easier to install and performs well in milder environments. 

2 - Double lock profiles: Double lock mechanical seam profiles refer to the 180-degree double folded seam. They are well suited for low-slope roofs in extremely wet environments, as the double fold provides extra fortification to the seam. They’re also preferable in cold weather climates that experience freezing and thawing, where the double lock seam will hold up better than the single lock. However, installation is more labor intensive, increasing the price and making damaged panels more difficult to replace. 

Snap lock and mechanical seam testing and uplift requirements 

Testing plays a crucial role in determining the appropriate type of panel for a specific project, especially for commercial and industrial work. Standing seam metal roofs undergo rigorous testing to ensure they meet the required standards for uplift resistance, water penetration and air infiltration. These tests help dictate which panel type, seam height and panel width are suitable for a particular building’s specifications and geographical location. 

The choice between snap lock and mechanical seam systems may depend on specific project requirements and standards, such as those set by the International Building Code (IBC) or local regulations.  

Uplift resistance is particularly crucial in areas prone to high winds. Uplift testing measures how well the roofing system can withstand upward forces. The corners take the brunt of the wind current, followed by the perimeters (roof edges) and finally, the field or internal and center, part of the roof.  

Panel design, seam type and clip spacing play significant roles in determining a roof’s uplift capability. If your panels are holding up well to the uplift pressures and the project requirements aren’t too strict, you might be able to use one clip spacing across all roof areas.  

However, if you must meet higher design pressures, you might have to use tighter clip spacings in different zones closer along the corners and perimeters and further apart on the roof field. Ultimately, it’s essential to choose a system that meets the uplift requirements for the building’s codes and design criteria. 

Panel width and seam height 

The width of the panels and the height of the seams can also influence the roof’s performance. Wider panels and higher seams may enhance the roof’s ability to shed water. However, the choice between different panel widths and seam heights will depend on the architectural design, aesthetic preferences and specific building requirements. Here are some height and slope considerations: 

• Seam height: Seam height, also known as rib height, can play a factor based on the slope of your roof. Water shedding roofs (hydrokinetic, above a 3/12) can usually perform well with a lower seam height. Water holding roofs (hydrostatic, below a 2/12) will usually require a taller seam height to help protect against water infiltration and raise the seam to prevent it being overrun by water.  Standard seam heights for standing seam metal roofs vary from one to three inches, with 1½” and 2″ being the most common sizes. A higher seam height generally offers better leak resistance, especially crucial in areas with heavy rainfall or snow. In contrast, lower seam heights may cost less but offer reduced protection against water penetration. 
• Slope or pitch: As mentioned, a minimum slope of 2/12 is usually required for standing seam metal roofs, meaning the roof must rise at least 2″ for every 12″ of horizontal span. This minimal slope ensures effective water runoff and prevents pooling, which can lead to leaks and damage. However, steeper slopes can enhance the aesthetic appeal and efficiency of rainwater shedding. Installing mechanical lock panels below 2/12 in steel requires continuous in-seam sealant to adhere to ASTM E2140 testing standards. 
• Climate influence: Geographic locations can play a significant role in determining the proper panel selection. For instance, areas with high wind uplifts will require a panel tested to perform in those conditions, while an area with heavy snow accumulation throughout the year might be better suited with a mechanically seamed panel.  
• Compliance with building codes: It is crucial to adhere to local building codes and regulations, which may have specific minimum slope requirements for standing seam metal roofs to ensure safety and performance standards are met. 

Ultimately, selecting the right combination of seam height and slope is essential for optimizing the performance, longevity and aesthetics of standing seam metal roofs. It’s also important to ensure that your roof meets all necessary requirements and is suitable for your local climate and building codes. 

Installation and cost considerations 

While snap lock systems are generally easier and quicker to install, mechanical seam roofs offer greater durability and protection for certain applications, making them suitable for more demanding environments. The choice between the two can also be influenced by budget constraints, as mechanical seam systems typically involve higher material and labor costs due to the complexity of installation. 

Standing seam aesthetics  

Aesthetics can also play a role in choosing between snap lock and mechanical seam systems. Snap lock panels tend to have bulkier seams, which might not be suitable for all architectural styles. In contrast, mechanical seam panels offer a sleeker look with thinner seams, which may be preferred for residential applications or when matching the roofing style of adjacent buildings. 

Understanding two-piece expansion clips and fixed clips 

In the realm of standing seam metal roofing, the method of attaching panels to the roof deck is a critical aspect of the roof’s overall performance and durability. Two main types of clips are used in the installation of standing seam roofs: two-piece expansion clips and fixed clips. 

Two-piece expansion clips 

Two-piece expansion clips consist of two interlocking components that allow for thermal expansion and contraction of the metal panels. The base of the clip is fastened to the roof deck, while the top/tab attaches to the metal panel. This design permits the panel to move along the clip’s length, accommodating the natural expansion and contraction of metal due to temperature changes without warping or damaging the panel. 

This ability to move can help prevent oil canning or the visible waviness in the flat areas of metal roofing and wall panels. By allowing for thermal movement, two-piece expansion clips help maintain the roof’s aesthetic appearance and structural integrity over time, as the seams expand in hot temperatures and contract in cold temperatures. These clips are especially crucial for long panel runs where significant expansion and contraction can occur. 

Fixed clips 

In contrast, fixed clips rigidly secure the metal panels to the roof deck and do not move with the panel t. These clips are cheaper than their two-piece counterparts but come with limitations. Fixed clips are suitable for shorter panel lengths, generally not exceeding 20′ for mechanically seamed panels, to minimize the risk of oil canning and panel distortion due to thermal expansion. Fixed clips are standard for snaplock panel systems as snaplock systems are designed to accommodate thermal movement independent from the clip. 

While fixed clips offer a cost-effective solution for certain applications, they are not recommended for areas subject to wide temperature fluctuations or for roofs with long panel runs. The lack of movement can lead to the panels buckling or becoming distorted over time, especially as the metal expands and contracts. 

Choosing the right clip for a standing seam roof 

The choice between two-piece expansion clips and fixed clips depends on various factors, including the engineering requirements for the project, the climate, the length of the metal panels and the overall design requirements. For commercial projects and areas with significant temperature changes, two-piece expansion clips are generally preferred due to their ability to accommodate thermal movement. However, for smaller residential projects or roofs with shorter panel lengths, fixed clips may be a suitable and more economical option. 

Ultimately, the selection of the appropriate clip type is an essential part of the roofing system’s design and installation process, impacting the roof’s aesthetic, functionality and longevity. 

So how do I plan a job based on this information? 

When planning a standing seam metal roofing project, it’s essential to evaluate factors such as roof slope, local weather conditions, testing requirements and aesthetic preferences. Both snap lock and mechanical seam systems have their advantages and suitable applications. By understanding the specific needs and constraints of your project, you can select the most appropriate standing seam metal roofing system to ensure longevity, performance and visual appeal. 

Keep in mind, the requirements for commercial projects will probably be more stringent than for residential projects. If you’re servicing an area that experiences high wind or extreme weather, you’ll need to plan for those factors. A metal standing seam roof meant to last 60 years isn’t much good if it blows off during the first tropical storm. 

The most important consideration is what is going to most benefit your customer. Everyone wants to save money on projects but explaining the value of a stronger roof using the right standing seam and pricier two-piece expansion clips might save them more in the long run if they’re living in a region that experiences extreme climate conditions.

Titebond’s WeatherMaster is making waves, or blocking them, with its versatility and durability.  

While at METALCON 2024, The Coffee Shops™ hosted a sound stage that was sponsored by New Tech Machinery. This gave us the opportunity to meet up with new and old friends around the industry to hear what they’ve been up to and what’s coming up next. One such person to stop by was Matthew (Matt) Puracchio who works in marketing for Titebond, which is one of Franklin International’s brands. Matt shared a bit about his company, saying, “We were founded in 1935. A lot of you guys probably know us for our wood glues, but we offer a full line of anything that sticks to anything, so we have caulks and sealants, construction adhesives, flooring adhesives, kind of the whole gambit.” 

Part of that wide suite of offerings is Titebond’s metal roof sealant. This is one of their premium construction products and was one of the things they highlighted at METALCON. Matt explained, “We call it WeatherMaster and I think that's one of the biggest things that separates us from anyone else in the market is that we offer it in 125 different colors.” This allows you to color match to pretty much anything you will find in the field to make an aesthetically cohesive and structurally sound roof seal. Matt shared a bit of what inspired Titebond to create this product, saying, “We want to help our customers and with this, they know that if they have a color, they can actually get it. You don't have to wait a couple of months for that... They also know that you use this once and you’re good. That’s it.” 

One of the factors that makes the WeatherMaster so structurally sound and versatile is its flexibility. Matt elaborated, “Not only is this a good adhesive for metals but is going to be flexible as well.” With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder that contractors in the field are loving the WeatherMaster. Many contractors have shared that they keep coming back for more of this product because they don’t have to worry about call backs with it. Matt explained, “They know when they use it's going to adhere to anything, no matter if it's wet, frozen, treated materials. It has that continued flexibility for a lifetime. They don't have to worry about it coming apart and going back and repairing that job. No one wants to go back to a job.”

Tune in as experts share their experiences attending the largest expo in the metal construction industry, METALCON. 

In a recent Coffee Conversations webinar, live from the trade show floor at METALCON 2024, host Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Adam Mazzella of Sheffield Metals, Terry McGuire of New Tech Machinery and Bobby Mesmer of RMG Erectors & Constructors. The panel of industry experts discussed the latest happenings at the trade show and how things are going for each company and their teams.  

Adam, Terry and Bobby discussed their company booths and exciting things they were seeing on the trade show floor at the event. Bobby shared, “METALCON is a great show every year. I mean, the way they put it together, all the people come together for the metal, the pre-engineered work, all the manufacturers.  We're seeing familiar faces in the erection business and in the supply business, so it's good to connect with everybody. I'm really excited to see some of the new products that are coming out.” 

Many manufacturers showcasing their products at their booths were eager to show off their latest product lines and equipment. Adam shared that his booth featured their newest products, centering around enhancing architectural curb appeal with textured PVDF coatings. “Textured items are hot right now, low gloss is in, textured is in. So, from an architectural curb appeal perspective, a lot of these things are in and we're only gaining steam with them, so it's exciting,” he shared.  

For New Tech Machinery, METALCON means manning a busy booth on the trade show floor with eager attendees checking out the latest equipment and machinery the brand had on display. “We've only been here for about four hours, but we brought a concept machine this year. And it has a lot of offerings that were developed through feedback from our clients. And so, we're really excited to show it. And we've had a massive amount of traffic this morning, so I'm very excited about how it's gone so far.”
