A Duro-Last roofing system delivers performance and sustainability for this key community organization in Minnesota.

Just minutes outside of Saint Paul, Minnesota and alongside the banks of Vadnais Lake sits a vibrant community called Vadnais Heights. The city was founded in 1974 out of the White Bear Township. At that time, it was a small, agricultural community. Today, it is a thriving suburban community that spans 8.2 square miles, is home to around 13,000 people and countless businesses and organizations – including Merrick Inc.

Founded in 1964, Merrick Inc. is an agency that focuses on helping “empower adults with disabilities through vocational and social opportunities, and to guide them toward realizing their goals and dreams.” They do this through a variety of services, including life enrichment activities, social events, leadership activities and a work service program in Vadnais Heights. The Merrick team are also staunch supporters of environmental stewardship. They model sustainability in action with a large solar array, geothermal HVAC and an extensive plastic recycling program. Overall, Merrick believes in doing the best for their community, whether that’s in their support programs or caring for the environment around Vadnais Heights.

So, when Merrick's 20-year-old, 59,600 square-foot roof started failing, it was not only critical to get it back into working order quickly, but key to creating something that was an extension of the organization's mission and values. As Mike Greenbaum, executive director of Merrick, explained, “Merrick is a place where people come to work, contribute and feel valued. It was important to make sure the facility reflects that commitment and continues to serve our mission for decades to come.”

The roof system that ended up fitting the bill was a Duro-Last 50 mil white membrane with custom curbs and stacks. It was installed by the team at Four Seasons Energy Efficient Roofing, who were actually the same contractor that installed the previous roof back in 2008! Nick Moen, CEO of Four Seasons, shared his story about coming back to work with Merrick again:

We installed the first roof back in 2008, a 40 mil Duro-Last system that performed exceptionally well. When Merrick reached out to replace it, we knew it was an opportunity to upgrade the system for even greater longevity and efficiency.

The first step to the project was to coordinate with Duro-Last's Recycle Your Roof program to deal with the 11,760 pounds of existing roof membrane that had to be removed. Brett Franz, a Duro-Last sales rep, spoke about how this program was perfect for the project, sharing, “Merrick’s entire operation is built around recycling and responsible use of resources, from how they manage materials inside the building to how they care for the building itself. This was the perfect project for the program.”

Once the old roof was removed, the Four Seasons team installed insulation and began mechanically fastening a new 50 mil white membrane on the roof! Not only will this durable membrane provide protection for the facilities below it, but it also benefits the overall energy efficiency of the system. As Nick explained, “That white surface helps reflect heat and optimize the solar array’s output.”

Once the installation was complete (which was no small feat as each of the 650 solar pedestal penetrations across the roof had to be individually flashed using custom curbs and stacks), ROOF-TRAK III walkway pads were placed to make it easier and safer to inspect and maintain the solar system.

Despite the complexity of the penetrations and a tight summer timeline, the project was completed in just six weeks, thanks to careful sequencing and coordination between Four Seasons and Merrick’s facilities team. It was a challenging installation, but a rewarding one. Not only can the Four Seasons team walk away proud of protecting a key community organization and helping them focus on their mission, but they also took home Duro-Last's 2025 Sustainability Award!

This award-winning project secured a long-term, high-performance roofing system for the U.S. Coast Guard’s largest West Coast training center.

Just an hour North of San Francisco, California sits Petaluma, a picturesque town nestled between the rolling hills of wine country and the majesty of the Pacific Ocean. And in addition to being home to more than 50,000 people, Petaluma is the home of the Coast Guard’s largest West Coast Training Center.

At Training Center Petaluma, Coast Guard cadets are trained to grow into the “latest chefs, medics, storekeepers, yeoman, information systems technicians, electronics technicians and operations specialists.” Training Center Petaluma is also home of the Coast Guard Leadership Development Center’s Chief Petty Officer Academy. With this amount of training and development occurring on site, it’s crucial that the facility stays in top operational form, which was the priority of the Coast Guard when they started renovations of Bauer Building 544 in 2023.

In fact, the performance of the building was so important, the Coast Guard reached out to Duro-Last to run “seam-strength and elongation testing under ASTM D751 to verify performance requirements.” In response, Duro-Last sales representative Joe Bristow built a custom testing machine to evaluate on-site performance. He shared, “I went back to my barn and built a machine to perform the test, and the Duro-Tuff membrane outperformed both the competing product and even its own published data. That machine is now on display at the Duro-Last facility in Grants Pass so other contractors can see what’s possible.”

With the performance of the roofing material proven, the project moved forward with Billmans Cool Roofing as the installer. Armando Saldana, co-owner of Billmans, recalled, “We love challenges and this one pushed us on every level...It had everything working against it — limited access, multiple contractors, weather delays and three different metal radiuses.”

Even with all those challenges, it only took 18 months for the Billmans team to complete the roof replacement. The process began with a tear-off to the original concrete deck. From there, crews installed primer, a vapor barrier, Duro-Guard insulation and a DensDeck Prime Roof Board. After all the was secured, the Duro-Tuff 60 mil membrane was adhered. And all of that work was just half of the project!

For the other half, the Billmans team had to install curved standing seam metal panels across multiple sloped roof sections. As Armando referenced, these panels also required three distinct radiuses – 4 feet, 6 feet and 9 feet. While it was certainly a challenge, the Billmans team rose to meet it, replacing the existing metal and insulation with Duro-Guard ISO, EXCEPTIONAL Metals HT Underlayment and custom metal paneling.

After that was done, all that was left was to step back and admire the work. And the work was well worth admiring. Armando shared, “This is a completely different building now. Everyone who works here loves how it looks and performs.” And Billmans wasn’t the only one proud of the results; the Duro-Last team was so impressed with the work they awarded the project their 2025 award for metal roofing!

            title='Duro-Last introduces industry-first PVC/TPO Tie-In, delivering a purpose-built solution for membrane transitions'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

This innovation provides contractors with a faster, more consistent approach to completing critical tie-in conditions.

Duro-Last, a member of the Amrize family of brands and a leading manufacturer of custom-fabricated single-ply roofing systems, announced today the launch of its PVC/TPO Tie-In Strip, an innovation designed to solve one of the industry’s most persistent installation challenges: creating a reliable, watertight transition between PVC and TPO membranes.

Historically, connecting dissimilar single-ply systems has required time-intensive field fabrication and inconsistent detailing, increasing the risk of variability and long-term performance concerns. The Duro-Last PVC/TPO Tie-In Strip addresses this issue with a purpose-built, engineered solution to provide contractors with a faster, more consistent approach to completing critical tie-in conditions.

“Contractors have had to improvise when transitioning between PVC and TPO for years, and that is exactly the kind of challenge we are focused on solving,” said Darren Schulz, president of Duro-Last. “The PVC/TPO Tie-In reflects our commitment to delivering meaningful innovation that makes a real difference on the roof. By engineering solutions around how contractors actually work, we are helping simplify complex details, improve consistency and elevate long-term system performance.”

The PVC/TPO Tie-In features a 10-foot strip with an 8-inch PVC skirt and a 6-inch TPO skirt, both factory-welded to PVC/TPO-coated metal to enable secure structural fastening and membrane compatibility. Prepunched fastening patterns and clearly defined welding parameters promote consistent installation across crews, reducing variability and supporting long-term watertight performance.

The introduction of this product comes at a time when hybrid roofing conditions are becoming increasingly common. Reroofing projects, retrofits and phased building expansions often require transitions between existing and new membrane types, creating added complexity for contractors in the field. The PVC/TPO Tie-In is designed specifically to meet these evolving jobsite demands, enabling contractors to complete transitions more efficiently and with greater confidence.

This innovation has already earned industry recognition, receiving the 2026 Innovative Product Showcase & Awards distinction at the 2026 International Roofing Expo and the Expert’s Choice Award for roofing products. These honors highlight the product’s role as a contractor-focused solution that addresses real-world challenges.

The PVC/TPO Tie-In Strip reflects Duro-Last’s broader commitment to innovation through engineered solutions. The brand continues to develop products designed to streamline installation, reduce complexity and enhance performance standards across the commercial roofing industry by addressing real-world challenges contractors face every day.

A closer look at Damschroder Roofing’s award‑winning roof replacement for Minerva Middle School.

If you head East on highway 30 out of Canton, Ohio, you will eventually find yourself in a warm, idyllic village by the name of Minerva. With a charming small-town atmosphere, this close-knit community is a welcoming and peaceful place. Unfortunately for the local middle school, that peace was disrupted last year when their 20-year-old roof started failing.

Minerva Middle School, which serves over 400 students in grades 6-8, had been struggling with water intrusion issues in their hallways and cafeteria due to the failing shingle roof. Built in 2004 over a metal deck, polyiso insulation, two-by-fours and sheathing, gaps in the roof were letting wind-driven rain enter the building envelope. Despite their best efforts, repairs were not fixing the problem. Scott Cassidy, curriculum director for Minerva Local School District, explained, “We just wanted something that would last. We’re a small district, and we pride ourselves on making the most of every dollar. We needed a roof that would perform for decades.”

So, they raised money and opened a public bid for the reroofing project. That’s where Damschroder Roofing of Fremont, Ohio, comes in. The Damschroder team saw this project as an opportunity for value engineering. One of their technical sales representatives, Coy Beckley, shared, “We worked closely with the board to find savings that let them add enhancements, like the standing seam vinyl ribs, to areas they originally couldn’t afford.”

However, it was far from smooth sailing (or roofing). Not only was the roof an intricate design of steep angles and segmented wings, but when the team got up on the roof they discovered that the original two-by-fours had only been glued in place, requiring the Damschroder team to tear off more of the roof than expected (down to the deck) to fix the problem.

To make sure everything was done correctly this time, Damschroder worked closely with Duro-Last's Engineering Services. Cameron Null, one of their project managers, explained, “We worked hand in hand with the Engineering Services team to confirm that both assemblies could transition seamlessly. They provided fastening diagrams, spacing requirements and verification that everything met Duro-Last’s high standards for performance and long-term protection.”

Once the engineering was planned, a crew of eight installers and an on-site superintendent started installing the new assembly, featuring two layers of 2.6-inch Duro-Guard ISO insulation, DEXcell coverboard and a Duro-Tuff 50 mil copper membrane. Additionally, they installed the originally planned vinyl ribs and a snow retention system. The result is a 90,750 square foot roof that delivers long-term performance and peace of mind, backed by Duro-Last's 20-Year NDL Warranty. Looking at the finished project, Scott couldn’t be happier. He shared, “It’s just comforting to know we don’t have to worry every time it rains. We’re proud of how it looks, proud of how it performs, and proud to have worked with a team that truly cared about getting it right.”

The cherry on top of a job well done for the Damschroder team? Duro-Last chose this incredible project as the 2025 Project of the Year! See it for yourself in their award video:

Learn how the event delivered strong networking, education and business opportunities for roofing professionals.

The Colorado Roofing Association (CRA) show reinforced its position as a cornerstone regional event, bringing together contractors, manufacturers and industry organizations for one of its largest gatherings to date. This year’s show was defined by record attendance, an expanded trade floor and a steady pace of meaningful connections that translated into real business opportunities.

That growth was immediately evident to attendees. The Coffee Shops™ (TCS) Multimedia Producer Zane Deluccie described the event as the biggest CRA show yet, emphasizing the value of reconnecting with industry partners such as TRA Snow & Sun and National Women in Roofing (NWIR). Even outdoor exhibits drew attention, with Rocket Equipment’s Trash Rocket standing out despite temperatures dropping below 40 degrees. Throughout the event, Zane noted, “We met plenty of great contractors who were interested in what we stood to offer. Our floor team talked to a number of existing clients and our booth wrangled a series of leads.”

The scale of the show also shaped the experience on the floor. TCS Podcast Producer Adam Cabrera said, “It turned out to be much larger than I expected going in. There were a ton of exhibitors and the show had great turn out.” With a large number of exhibitors spread across multiple warehouse spaces the layout created continuous foot traffic, giving the team opportunities to introduce TCS to new audiences while building interest among contractors who were previously unfamiliar with the platform.

For TCS Multimedia Manager Megan Ellsworth, the event’s momentum was most visible in both participation and energy. “It was the biggest year attendance wise that I've been to with about 2000 people in attendance,” as Megan described an environment that remained active from start to finish where she conducted interviews with companies including FlashCo, Brava Roof Tile, TRA Snow & Sun, Owens Corning® and GAF, along with organizations such as Duro-Last® and Latinos En Roofing. Her conversation with Amparo from Latinos En Roofing, attending for the first time, highlighted the growing influence of the Colorado market.

Megan also supported the NWIR Denver/Northern Colorado chapter booth, which saw steady traffic and new member signups throughout the event. Alongside well-attended educational sessions and upcoming programming, including a March 18 Lunch and Learn, the show reflected continued growth and opportunity across the Colorado roofing industry.

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Together, the systems reflect a broader shift in commercial roofing toward resilience, serviceability and integrated roof system design.

Duro-Last, a member of the Amrize family of brands and a leading manufacturer of custom-fabricated single-ply roofing systems, announced today the availability of VADA Vented Roof Systems and SWIF Rack Commercial Solar Racking through its national contractor network, expanding its portfolio with two performance-driven solutions designed to address evolving wind and solar demands.

Together, the systems reflect a broader shift in commercial roofing toward resilience, serviceability and integrated roof system design.

VADA Vented Roof Systems: Reframing wind resistance

The VADA Vented Roof System reframes how the industry approaches wind resistance. Instead of increasing field attachment to combat uplift, VADA uses a patented perimeter design engineered to help ensure maximum wind uplift resistance by neutralizing pressure differential and addressing the root cause of wind-related failure.

Available for Duro-Last PVC and Duro-Tech™ TPO installations, this high-performance approach is now available at national scale, expanding access to resilience-focused roofing design as wind risk and extreme weather events continue to increase.

SWIF Rack Commercial Solar Racking: Defining solar preferred roofing

In response to continued growth in rooftop solar, Duro-Last also announced an exclusive partnership with SWIF Rack, establishing a comprehensive solar preferred solution designed around real-world roofing challenges.

Traditional ballasted and low-profile racking systems can create access limitations, premature membrane wear and long-term service conflicts. Developed by a longtime Duro-Last contractor, SWIF Rack addresses these challenges by elevating solar arrays above the membrane using a Stanchion With Integrated Foot (SWIF) to attach the system through the roof assembly and directly into the building structure. This approach maintains unobstructed access to the roof while transferring photovoltaic loads away from the roof surface. The elevated design helps protect the roof assembly from compression and membrane degradation and supports the long-term performance expected from commercial roofing systems.

By pairing SWIF with custom-fabricated stack flashings and details, Duro-Last formalizes a more integrated relationship between roofing systems and solar arrays. The system allows maintenance, repair and even roof replacement without removing photovoltaic panels, shifting the focus from installation convenience to lifecycle performance.

“We are excited to expand the Duro-Last product offering with innovative, high-quality solutions that directly address the real challenges our contractors and building owners face,” said Darren Schulz, president of Duro-Last. “Both VADA Vented Roof Systems and SWIF Rack Commercial Solar Racking represent thoughtful engineering and practical innovation. By bringing these systems into our portfolio, we are strengthening our commitment to performance, resilience and long-term value for the commercial roofing industry.”
