From modified bitumen to single ply and restoration, learn how BITEC’s four-pillar approach helps you continue evolving with the market.

In commercial roofing, contractors are balancing building performance, environmental conditions, restoration opportunities, warranty expectations and evolving customer demands, all while navigating a growing range of roofing technologies. That’s why BITEC® developed its four pillars of roofing, a framework designed to simplify roofing system selection while helping contractors match the right solutions to the right buildings.

In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with Shane Millwood of BITEC to discuss how the company’s product portfolio has evolved over the last four decades and why clarity is so important.

A simpler way to understand roofing systems

“You can look at it from a marketing aspect,” Shane explained. “But more importantly [the four pillars] really simplify BITEC’s offerings to the contractors.”

These pillars organize the company’s solutions into distinct categories:

Advanced Bitumen Technology (ABT)

StrongHold™ single-ply systems

Storm Breaker™ coatings

Repair Boss™ service and repair products

Together, the structure gives contractors a clearer understanding of where each system fits and how to better align products with building performance goals. More importantly, it reinforces BITEC’s broader philosophy that no single roofing system is right for every building.

As Shane emphasized, roofing decisions should never be one-size-fits-all. Instead, contractors need to evaluate environmental conditions, building use and owner expectations before recommending a system. Rather than promoting a single solution, each pillar represents roofing systems designed for different applications and performance needs. BITEC’s ABT pillar includes APP, SBS and self-adhered modified bitumen systems, as well as built-up roofing and coal tar solutions. Meanwhile, the StrongHold™ line offers TPO, PVC and KEE single-ply membranes designed for different environmental demands.

He noted that roofing selection is not only about climate, but also about what happens inside the building itself. “It could be just what’s underneath that roof system, what they’re actually doing and what’s coming out and getting on that roof,” he said, pointing to environments like restaurants or industrial facilities where grease and chemical exposure can influence system performance.

Evolving with the market

The four pillars of roofing also highlight how BITEC has evolved alongside broader industry trends. Historically, the company was heavily focused on modified bitumen and asphaltic systems. “What we’ve seen across our roofing industry is that the asphaltic side is not as dominant in the market as it used to be,” Shane said. “There’s more single ply in the industry than anything else. So, what did that tell us? As a company, we had to enter the single ply market.” This is the evolution that led to the acquisition of Viking Products Group and the addition of StrongHold™ single-ply systems to BITEC’s portfolio.

Still, Shane made it clear that modified bitumen and multi-ply roofing systems remain a critical part of the commercial roofing landscape. “If you’ve got a building that’s got a billion dollars' worth of gear inside of it, you want to protect it,” he said. “That redundancy becomes very helpful in those situations.”

BITEC’s expansion hasn’t stopped at membranes and systems. The company’s Storm Breaker™ coatings line reflects the rapid growth of roof restoration in the commercial market, while Repair Boss™ products help contractors improve efficiency in their service departments.

Taken together, the four pillars showcase a manufacturer adapting to contractor needs, changing markets and the growing demand for lifecycle-focused roofing solutions. Listen to the full podcast episode to hear more about how BITEC can help you navigate complex roofing decisions.

Four decades of culture

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

By Dani Sheehan.

BITEC’s people-first culture has shaped its growth, strengthened contractor relationships and positioned the company for the future.

For many manufacturers, longevity is measured in product lines or market share. But in roofing, companies that remain trusted for decades are often built on a strong culture. In a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth sat down with BITEC® leaders David Allen, Joel Shealey and Shane Millwood to discuss the company’s 40-year history, future growth and the values that continue to shape how they operate.

Building a culture that grows with the company

BITEC’s culture directly influences how the company invests in its employees, adapts to change and builds lasting contractor relationships. Shane pointed to people as the foundation of BITEC’s future growth: “I believe that if we align people’s gifts with our business plan in the right way, what we see today is just the beginning of what BITEC can be.”

Rather than framing BITEC’s anniversary as a finish line, Shane described it as the next stage of growth. Maintaining the momentum requires building teams that can evolve alongside the industry in the same way that product lines grow. As roofing manufacturers continue facing workforce shortages and increasing operational demands, attracting and retaining the right people is one of the industry’s biggest challenges. For BITEC, culture is the strategy that ties these efforts together. Shane added, “I think inside the business itself, [culture] is at the top of the list of importance.”

Shane also emphasized that BITEC’s culture is not something recently developed, but he instead credited the company’s original leadership with establishing principles that continue guiding the organization today. David reinforced that the culture really hasn’t changed significantly: “And I harp on that. That’s a very important part, that sets us apart and makes us unique.”

Sustaining a company across four decades requires creating an environment where employees, leaders and customers understand what the company stands for regardless of how the market changes around them. David explained BITEC’s philosophy around hiring, saying, “You have to hire and bring into your organization people who are like-minded, humble... they want to work, they want to build themselves, their characters, their career.” BITEC prioritizes employees who can grow within the company and contribute to its long-term vision.

Turning company culture into contractor confidence

This hiring mindset directly influences how BITEC approaches contractor relationships. David described the company as “customer oriented and driven,” emphasizing the importance of building “consistent, long-term business.” Culture becomes part of the customer experience itself, helping to establish trust and reliability that keeps contractors coming back.

As BITEC has continued evolving its products, technology and operations, company leaders have recognized that maintaining culture also requires adaptability. Joel explained that growth has pushed the organization to refine processes and empower employees to solve problems more effectively. Reflecting on one of BITEC’s busiest production periods, he shared that what once felt chaotic became manageable through intentional operational changes and employee development. “We managed to adapt and grow with our growth,” Joel said. “It lets us find the best in our people as well.”

The company’s ability to evolve without losing identity is what makes a 40-year milestone even more significant. Many manufacturers quickly point to product innovation or market expansion, but BITEC’s leadership repeatedly returns to the same foundation: people. Whether discussing hiring, mentoring, customer relationships or operational improvements, BITEC consistently reinforces the idea that culture is what allows the company to sustain growth across generations of leadership and changing industry demands.

BITEC’s story offers a reminder that strong business relationships are built on consistency, trust and the people behind the work. As the company looks toward its next chapter, its leaders made it clear that culture will continue driving both innovation and relationships for years to come.

For Texas contractors looking to expand services, strengthen margins and better serve property owners, this is a timely opportunity to gain insights and make valuable industry connections.

As Texas contractors look for new ways to increase profitability, extend roof life and meet growing demand from property owners, roof coatings have begun to gain momentum. In response, the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) is bringing together leading manufacturers and experts to share real-world insights on what’s working in today’s coatings market in new in-person forum.

This forum, Lunch & Learn: Roof Coatings Forum, will be taking place on Wednesday, June 10 in Euless, Texas. According to an invitation from Kristen Harford, executive director of NTRCA, this educational event is designed to provide practical, experience-driven perspectives from a strong lineup of manufacturers, including ASC, Bitec and Polyglass. Rather than focusing on one product approach, the forum creates a unique opportunity to hear multiple viewpoints in one setting, helping contractors better evaluate solutions for their businesses and customers.

The discussion will center around key topics shaping the coatings segment today, including opportunities to improve profitability, strategies for roof restoration/life extension and the latest technologies influencing the industry. Attendees will also gain a clearer understanding of how coatings deliver value to property owners, an increasingly important selling point as building owners look for cost-effective alternatives to full roof replacement.

Beyond the presentations, the format is designed for engagement. Contractors will have direct access to manufacturer representatives, the ability to ask questions and the chance to explore tabletop displays and product samples. This hands-on component is especially valuable for those evaluating how to expand or refine their coatings offerings.

Overall, association events like what NTRCA is doing help contractors stay informed and connected to the latest developments in the field. This is key to staying competitive, expecially in a market like Texas where climate conditions and building demands create ongoing opportunities for restoration solutions.

Again, the forum will be held at Texas Star in Euless from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with lunch provided. Space is limited and advanced registration is encouraged. Register here or visit the NTRCA directory on RoofersCoffeeShop.

During their anniversary celebration, BITEC showcased the people, partnerships and pride behind the company’s first 40 years.

When BITEC® opened its doors four decades ago, it started with a simple mission: build quality roofing products with good people by your side. Forty years later, that same people-first philosophy was on full display as employees, families, community leaders and longtime partners gathered to celebrate the company’s milestone anniversary.

Beneath the festivities was a deeper story, not just about forty years of manufacturing excellence, but about the people who built the company, stayed with it and helped it grow alongside the community it calls home.

A company built by people

For founder Bruce Shealey, seeing the celebration unfold was a powerful reminder of how far BITEC has come. Reflecting on BITEC’s earliest days, Bruce described the uncertainty of building a manufacturing operation from the ground up. The long days, the sleepless nights and the challenge of creating something new were all part of the journey, but he was quick to point out that it was the people who believed in the vision and worked alongside him that made it real.

From the very beginning, Bruce said BITEC’s success was never about one person or one product. It was built by employees, neighbors and supporters who helped turn an ambitious idea into an industry mainstay.

From first employee to CEO

David Allen knows that story better than most. As BITEC’s first employee, hired by Bruce 40 years ago, David has witnessed every stage of the company’s evolution, from handwritten processes and startup growing pains to the diversified roofing manufacturer BITEC has become today.

Now serving as CEO, David said one of BITEC’s greatest strengths is not just attracting good people but keeping them. Loyalty is evident throughout the organization, where long-term employees, multigenerational families and a strong core team continue to shape the company’s culture and future.

A family legacy, a growing future

Joel Shealey, Bruce’s son and the company’s current president, shared that BITEC has more than doubled in size during the past seven years. What was once primarily known for modified roofing products has grown into a full-line manufacturer offering coatings, single-ply systems, repair products, insulation and deck boards.

Yet even as the company expands, Joel said BITEC’s roots remain firmly planted in Morrilton. As one of the largest employers in the area, BITEC’s growth has grown alongside the town itself, creating opportunities for local families, supporting community organizations and building partnerships that extend beyond the manufacturing of roofing products.

Allen Lipsmeyer, mayor of Morrilton, praised BITEC as a corporate partner that consistently shows up, whether supporting local fundraisers, civic organizations or public safety initiatives. Members of the local fire department, including Captain Terry Alvey, echoed that sentiment, describing BITEC as a company that continues to invest in the people who call Morrilton home.

For The Coffee Shops’ Account Manager Emma Richardson, who spent the day speaking with employees, leadership and community members, BITEC’s impact on Central Arkansas was clear. Families wearing company shirts filled the grounds. Children fed baby goats at the petting zoo, chased giant bubbles and explored hands-on exhibits with local first responders. The aroma of barbecue drifted through the crowd while longtime employees, city leaders and community partners stopped by to share stories.

“It was really more than family friendly – it was community oriented,” Emma shared. “It felt like the entire town came together to celebrate.” She heard story after story about BITEC’s commitment to giving back, supporting local organizations and creating opportunities for generations of families.

“What stood out most,” Emma said, “was the pride. You could feel how much people genuinely care about this company, but also how much the company cares about the community that helped build it.”

If the anniversary celebration proved anything, it’s that BITEC’s next chapter will be built the same way its past was – through strong relationships, local pride and an unwavering commitment to both manufacturing excellence and the people who make it possible.

How contractor input drove one manufacturer’s expansion into a complete roofing systems provider.

At the International Roofing Expo (IRE) in Las Vegas, BITEC® marked its 40th anniversary with a clear message: its growth from a modified bitumen producer to a full systems manufacturer has been driven by listening to contractors. Speaking from The Coffee Shops™ sound stage, Shane Millwood, vice president of sales and marketing, and Joel Shealey, president of the company, reflected on that milestone and the strategy behind it. The company began in 1986 focused on modified bitumen. Over the past several years, however, it has expanded its offerings well beyond its original product line, signaling a steady and deliberate evolution centered around meeting customer needs.

That expansion did not happen overnight. It was a deliberate shift in how the company approaches the market and its customers. Joel shared, “In the last five or six years we’ve really expanded our offerings with almost anything from the deck up; coatings, cover boards, insulation, fasteners, single plies. So, it’s a complete line of offerings today.” The decision to expand offerings effectively answered the call for what contractors were asking for in the field.

For BITEC®, responding to contractor demand is not simply a product strategy; it is a guiding principle. “We are passionate about bringing the most value from a manufacturer standpoint to the contractor level and we must hear and listen to their demands whether they’re actually saying, ‘Hey, you got to do this or not.’ We hear it,” Shane said.

Joel emphasized, “The contractors are our customers. You have to listen to your customers.” That mindset shapes more than the product lineup. In practical terms, it also influences how the company approaches service and delivery. President Joel Shealey said their focus includes strengthening technical support, sales engagement and logistics to make it easier for contractors to get what they need, when they need it. “We’re unique in that we’ve got the ability to send almost anything on one truck to a job,” Joel said.

By combining expanded product lines with technical support and streamlined delivery, BITEC® is positioning itself as a single-source partner. After four decades, the company’s direction remains straightforward: listen first, then build solutions that meet contractor needs.

With StrongHold™, contractors can meet building owner needs with a family of solutions built for the realities of modern commercial roofing.

Single-ply roofing may dominate the low-slope commercial market, but there is no universal answer when it comes to membrane selection. Building use, traffic, climate, rooftop equipment and owner expectations all influence what system makes the most sense. During a recent episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Shane Millwood of BITEC® highlighted the company’s StrongHold™ single-ply systems, outlining why contractors should think beyond a default specification and instead match each roof to the demands of the project.

Why TPO continues to lead the market

Shane explained that many newer contractors naturally gravitate toward TPO because “it’s low cost, so it’s budget friendly and installation is easier and faster.” He also noted that TPO is commonly used on large buildings with minimal foot traffic, such as warehouses and broad commercial facilities.

StrongHold TPO is an ideal option for projects where speed, value and efficient coverage matter most. Available in multiple thicknesses and installation methods, StrongHold TPO gives contractors a practical solution for new construction and reroofing while also delivering the reflectivity many owners want to help manage rooftop temperatures and energy use.

Where PVC adds value

While TPO serves many projects well, some buildings require more from their roof system. Shane pointed to restaurants as a clear example, sharing that many fast-food facilities rely on PVC because it better resists grease and rooftop contaminants than standard alternatives.

The material’s added resistance makes StrongHold PVC an especially valuable option for restaurants, food processing facilities, manufacturing plants and buildings where chemical exposure or rooftop discharge can shorten membrane life. Tight hot-air-welded seams and long-term flexibility further strengthen the case for projects requiring durability. The ability to perform under these conditions for decades far outweighs the upfront cost compared to TPO.

KEE for demanding conditions and long-term performance

Shane described KEE as “PVC on steroids,” because of its ability to support longer warranties and perform in more critical conditions. While different formulations exist across the market, the category is widely recognized for enhanced flexibility, weldability and long-term resistance to heat, UV and chemical exposure.

The purpose of StrongHold KEE systems is to help contractors deliver a premium membrane option for buildings where longevity matters most. Data centers, hospitals, schools, cultural institutions and high-value commercial properties often need systems that can perform reliably over extended service lives.

A full system approach

BITEC offers adhesives, flashing components and accessories engineered to work with StrongHold sheets for secure bonds and watertight performance. Combined with membrane widths up to 120 inches for faster installs and fewer seams, the system is designed to support efficiency on the roof and durability over time.

Honoring 40 years of innovation, culture and contractor commitment.

There are moments in this industry that feel personal. Milestones that are not just about years in business, but about relationships, resilience and the kind of leadership that shapes roofing for generations. Celebrating 40 years of BITEC® is one of those moments.

I have had the privilege of knowing the people behind BITEC since the earliest days of my own career. From trade show floors to jobsite conversations, BITEC has always represented something more than products. It has represented passion, innovation and a deep commitment to contractors. And I have to say, one of my favorite products from those early days were the Pattern-Design Modified Bitumen cap sheets. BITEC truly led the industry with innovative colors and designs that brought a whole new level of aesthetics to low-slope roofing. I remember thinking every building owner should be looking down at their roof with pride, not just seeing a roof, but seeing a finished system that looked as good as it performed.

Their story begins in 1986 with a bold vision to bring modified bitumen technology to the U.S. market. With international collaboration and technical exchanges from partners in Europe, BITEC quickly built a strong foundation rooted in innovation and expertise. What stands out most is how quickly that vision became reality. Within just over six months of breaking ground, the company was producing its first products and entering the market with confidence.

From those early days of small production runs, BITEC grew rapidly. By the early 1990s, they had expanded nationwide with a strong sales force and growing contractor relationships. It was a pivotal moment that proved their model worked and that there was real demand for what they were bringing to the industry.

Over the years, BITEC has continued to stand out through innovation. From introducing visually appealing mineral surface rolls to expanding into international markets and supporting global technology development, they have consistently looked ahead. They have not just followed trends, they have helped shape them.

Like every company with longevity, BITEC has faced challenges. Economic shifts, global events and industry changes have tested their resilience. Yet time and again, they have adapted. During periods like the post-9/11 slowdown and even the uncertainty of COVID-19, BITEC found ways to not only endure but grow. In fact, their business saw significant expansion during COVID, reinforcing the strength of their relationships and their ability to respond quickly to market needs.

What has always set BITEC apart is its culture. From the earliest days, there has been a focus on people, not just as employees, but as partners and as part of a greater community. That culture is built on humility, hard work and a commitment to long-term relationships. It is about hiring individuals who want to grow, contribute and take ownership. It is about creating an environment where people feel valued and supported.

That same culture extends directly to their customers. Contractors are not simply customers to BITEC, they are the reason the company exists. That contractor-first mindset has built trust and loyalty that spans decades and continues to drive the company forward.

In recent years, BITEC has embraced evolution in a powerful way. With new leadership and a renewed focus on growth, they have expanded their offerings beyond modified bitumen to include sealants, adhesives, coatings and single-ply systems. Strategic acquisitions and product development have positioned them to deliver complete roofing systems from the deck up, all from a single source.

This evolution is not about chasing growth for its own sake. It is about meeting the real needs of today’s contractors. The industry is changing. Workforce challenges, the need for faster installation and the demand for cleaner, more efficient systems are reshaping roofing. BITEC is responding by staying agile, innovative and focused on providing solutions that help contractors succeed.

Looking ahead, the message from BITEC leadership is clear. Stay focused on the contractor. No matter how technology evolves, roofing will always rely on skilled professionals. Supporting those professionals with quality products, responsive service and true partnership will remain at the core of their business.

Growth, innovation and strategic expansion will continue to define the next chapter. But those efforts will always be grounded in the same principles that built the company over the last 40 years. Do it right. Deliver quality. Take care of the contractor.

As BITEC celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, it is not just a reflection on the past. It is a launch point for the future. From its beginnings in Arkansas to its impact across the industry today, BITEC represents what is possible when vision, culture and commitment come together.

The product line includes styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and atactic polypropylene (APP) cap plies and high-temperature underlayments. Together, these components are engineered to provide durability and versatility in built-up and modified bitumen roofing systems, supporting consistent performance across varied jobsite conditions.

For contractors seeking faster dry-in and simplified installation, self-adhered options include pressure-sensitive caps, bases and underlayments designed to reduce fumes, torches and extra equipment. MAT-40, a high-temperature tile and metal roof underlayment, is built to resist punctures and tears while delivering waterproofing protection in both residential and commercial applications.

APP modified bitumen membranes are designed to provide waterproofing protection in extreme weather conditions and can be used in a variety of applications. For projects that demand greater flexibility and multiple installation methods, SBS membranes deliver strength and performance tailored to specific objectives, with fiberglass and polyester reinforcement options available. To support both systems, adhesives, primers and flashing accessories are engineered to integrate seamlessly, helping contractors create stable, watertight assemblies.

Across the broader membrane portfolio, performance features are designed to address real-world jobsite challenges, including flexibility for cold climates and high-movement structures, ultraviolet-resistant and heat-weldable cap and base sheets for long-term durability, reliable layers that enhance system stability and heat- and moisture-resistant barriers suited for metal and steep-slope roofs.

By offering multiple membrane types and installation approaches, Advanced Bitumen Technology membranes provide contractors with adaptable solutions designed to meet the structural and environmental demands of modern roofing projects.
