Tuscaloosa project builds on GAF’s nearly 50-year presence in Tuscaloosa and its longstanding commitment to the community.

GAF, North America’s largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer,  joined local leaders Thursday, September 10, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of the renovation of The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The event featured remarks from the Chamber, GAF and community representatives highlighting the collaborative effort between private and public groups to bring the new facility to life. Following the remarks, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held, which concluded with an open house showcasing the newly renovated facility.

“This investment helps ensure our building will continue to support businesses, workers and organizations that drive our local economy here in Tuscaloosa and across West Alabama,” said Kyle South, president and CEO of The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama. “GAF has been a valued partner in our community for decades, and this project is another example of their commitment to creating a lasting impact in West Alabama.”

The newly renovated, state-of-the-art workforce and community development center is designed to support local business growth, attract and cultivate talent and advance economic development across the region. As part of the renovation, GAF donated a new, fully adhered GAF EverGuard® TPO roofing system which was installed by GAF-certified contractor Bama Roofing to help protect the facility for years to come.

“We were excited to partner with Bama Roofing to donate and install a new roof for this facility and support an organization that does so much for local workforce development and businesses in the area,” said Scott Baldwin, GAF-Tuscaloosa plant manager. “What makes Tuscaloosa so special is its deep sense of pride, hard work and a community that takes care of one another. We are proud to be a part of that and to serve and support the city.”

The project builds on GAF’s nearly 50-year legacy in Tuscaloosa, where its manufacturing facility employs more than 160 local community members and produces enough roofing materials each day to protect more than 300 homes. Alongside its manufacturing operations, GAF has produced and donated materials for more than 100 homes in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Tuscaloosa over the past decade, as well as partnered with Habitat and Strengthen Alabama Homes over the past year on a FORTIFIED™ roofing initiative to help homes better withstand severe weather and donated a new low-slope roof for the Hay College Center at Stillman College.

The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama plays a critical role in regional economic and community development. In addition to housing the Chamber and West AlabamaWorks, the facility serves as a regional hub for prominent nonprofit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, the Tuscaloosa Education Foundation, Junior Achievement and other community partners. • OSHA Defense Mastery: also on October 22, this session will be taught by the incredible Trent Cotney of Adams and Reese. During the 50-minute session, Trent will cover a practical roadmap for handling OSHA inspections. • NRCA update on roofing industry technical issues: in this session, the National Roofing Contractors Association’s Mark Graham will give attendees an update on building code changes, FM guideline revisions and other technical details that “change how roofing contractors design, bid and install roof systems.”
• Leadership, Performance, Teamwork, Resilience and Accountability: This session is actually the keynote of the 2026 show! It is taught by Clint Bruce, who is a former NFL linebacker, a Navy SEAL veteran and business founder. His presentation will draw on his experiences and focus on the role of leadership, performance, teamwork, resilience and accountability in success.

Explore innovations on the expo floor

The expo floor (which will be open 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. on 10/22 and 10 a.m - 2 p.m. on 10/23) will host more than 150 manufacturers, suppliers, software and service providers such as ABC Supply, QXO, Polyglass, Tamko, Malarkey Roofing Products, Owens Corning, MetalVue by Sherwin-Williams, SRS Distribution, GAF, READYSLATE, JobNimbus, Eagleview and Johns Manville! Each exhibitor booth will showcase the newest, more innovative products and services in the roofing material and technology market.

There are also some fun prize opportunities! On October 22, door prize drawings will kick off at 2 p.m. (you must be present to win). As for October 23, there will be a $5,000 RCAT Raffle Winner drawing at 1:30 p.m.!

Monday is when things get really busy with a stacked schedule of more than a dozen education sessions. Here’s our shortlist of must-attend sessions from this day:

• Roofing Trends That Matter: RoofersCoffeeShop®’s own Heidi J. Ellsworth will be presenting about roofing trends! This presentation will give attendees valuable insight into where the roofing industry has been and where it’s moving towards.

• Using AI in Roofing Estimating: John Kenney of Cotney Consulting Group shares insight into the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in roofing operations, specifically related to estimating.

In addition to those education opportunities, Monday boasts two luncheon options, three demonstrations and the much-anticipated Roofer’s Feud event. Here’s a bit about those options:

• Luncheons: there are two lunch learning opportunities on Monday. One is for Spanish-speaking professionals and features Victor Maya (Advantage Roofing, GAF) discussing how to maximize commercial roofing claims. But wait, there’s more! Hit the ground running on Tuesday with breakfast and table talks with the National Women in Roofing team at 7 a.m. (please note, additional registration of $55 required for this event). After breakfast, it’s time to jump straight back into education sessions! Some of our must-attends for Tuesday include:

• The Cost of Disconnection: for this Spanish-language session, Monica Vornbrock of the GLO Group dives into how post-sale breakdowns are costing contractors customer trust and revenue.
• Designing Durable Cold-Climate Roofs: in this session, Mindy Dahlquist of TRA Snow and Sun explores the role of snow retention in designing roofs in cold climates.
• Escaping Reactive Service: the last session on our shortlist is Tracey Donels (Service First Solutions) talk about creating predictable business growth through service offerings.

And just like on Monday, there are two options for lunchtime learning and some can’t miss events:

Volunteers from GAF’s new Newton facility recently joined forces with Habitat for Humanity of Harvey County to complete several critical construction tasks on a new home that will soon provide safe, affordable housing for a local family in Hesston, Kansas.

Working alongside Habitat for Humanity staff, the team insulated windows, installed rafter insulation baffles in the attic, added stud guard safety plates and caulked the home's exterior in preparation for painting, moving the project forward while also ensuring the home is resilient, comfortable and fully ready to welcome its future residents.

“We’re incredibly grateful for GAF’s continued support of Habitat for Humanity of Harvey County and our mission to help local families achieve safe, affordable housing,” said Ron Flaming, chairman of Habitat for Humanity of Harvey County. “From investing their time and resources to building meaningful relationships within our community, GAF has demonstrated a genuine commitment to Harvey County. Their partnership has made a lasting impact on the families we serve, and we’re proud to work alongside an organization that is dedicated to strengthening our community.”

Hybrid roof assemblies combine durability, redundancy and energy efficiency to help protect data centers and support uninterrupted operations. 

Data centers depend on carefully controlled environments to keep servers, storage devices, networking equipment and other critical technology operating reliably. Because roofing failures can threaten interior conditions and disrupt essential digital services, GAF hybrid roofing systems offer data center owners a layered approach that combines the proven strength of modified bitumen with the flexibility, weather resistance and energy efficiency of single-ply membranes. 

Unique data center needs 

Data centers are classified by tiers ranging from I to IV, a ranking system that indicates the reliability of the data center's infrastructure. The most basic tier I facility doesn't guarantee redundancy for any system and it's allowed to go "offline" up to 26 hours per year. A tier IV data center, however, is fully redundant and "fault tolerant," meaning it's only allowed to go offline for a total of 26 minutes per year. 

A data center's roof construction is therefore critical to help not only protect the building's interior but also maintain the ambient temperature range required for the sensitive equipment therein. Of all the possible reasons a data center might need to go offline, you don't want roofing problems to be one of them. When it comes to meeting these exacting requirements, hybrid systems can check all the boxes. 

Understanding hybrid systems: What is a hybrid roof assembly? 

A hybrid roof is composed of two roofing membrane systems, each with different materials and technologies, combined in a single roof assembly. Each system offers specific strengths and together, the hybrid system combines the best features of both. 

One example of a hybrid roof assembly is a modified bitumen base with a cap layer consisting of a single-ply membrane. For a better understanding of how two roofing systems can be better than one, let's examine each system's strengths. 

Modified bitumen systems 

The traditional roof system for low-slope roofs is the asphaltic built-up roof (BUR). When first conceived in the 1890s, a typical BUR was composed of multiple redundant layers of rags, paper, or asbestos hot-mopped with asphalt. Over time, the plies evolved into "modified" bitumen membranes consisting of asphalt-impregnated fiberglass felts, fabrics, or mats with added flexibility from rubber or plastic modifiers. The final layer of a BUR is usually either an asphalt flood coating with embedded gravel or a mineral-surfaced, granulated cap sheet. 

Depending on the chemical makeup of the base and cap layers, today's plies can be hot mopped, torch applied, cold applied or self-adhered. Multiple redundant layers of modified bitumen technology account for its longevity and robust puncture resistance. GAF bituminous roofing membranes, including RUBEROID®, GAFGLAS® and Tri-Ply®, have a long track record of proven performance and time-tested durability. 

Single-ply roofing membranes 

Single-ply membranes are the roofing system of choice for most commercial roofs due to their ease of installation and relatively low cost. Most single-ply membranes are either thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC). 

Each offers excellent performance, with strong, heat-welded seams, long-term weathering and UV resistance. GAF EverGuard® TPO membranes have the added benefit of natural fungal resistance and a high degree of flexibility, while GAF EverGuard® PVC membranes offer enhanced protection against fire and chemicals. 

You can install these single-ply membranes more quickly than a traditional modified bitumen system using mechanical attachment, induction welding, or adhesives. They're also resistant to ponding water and are easy to repair and maintain. Single-ply membranes' higher Solar Reflective Index adds to a roof's energy efficiency, as well, which can help reduce cooling costs in the building. 

Benefits of hybrid systems 

When you combine the proven strength, redundancy and puncture resistance of modified bitumen assemblies with the flexibility, ease of installation and energy efficiency of single-ply roofing membranes, it adds up to a roofing system that's hard to beat. 

The benefits of combining these two roof technologies include: 

• Improved durability and longevity 
• Enhanced energy efficiency 
• Cost effectiveness over the system's life cycle 
• Flexibility in design and application 

Meeting unique data center challenges 

With their multi-layer redundancy, strong protection against leaks and enhanced energy efficiency, hybrid systems can meet data center roof construction's demanding requirements. 

A GAF hybrid roofing system can also be an excellent solution for a data center roof retrofit or re-cover. If the existing BUR is in relatively good condition with minimal underlying moisture, you can install a single-ply fleece-back TPO membrane as a new top layer without tearing off the existing roofing system, which can be disruptive and expensive. This addition can increase the entire roof assembly's service life through its long-term weathering protection and UV resistance. Additionally, you can install the single-ply membrane with low-VOC options, minimizing both odor and noise disturbance.

When a Southern California camp serving children with cancer needed some help, nearly 70 roofing professionals joined forces to deliver five brand new cabin roofs.

On August 18, 2026, roofing professionals gathered at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times in Southern California to install new roofs on five of the camp’s 14 cabins. The work was made possible by volunteers who contributed their time and professional expertise, along with companies that provided the labor and materials needed to complete the installations. Participating companies included Antis Roofing and Waterproofing, Gabella Construction, GAF, Howard and Sons Inc., QXO and Shell Roofing Solutions.

About the camp

The project helped protect a place where children with cancer can step away from hospitals and treatments and spend time simply enjoying being kids. As described on their website: 

Camp programs provide children with cancer and families the opportunity to pause, connect with others who are facing similar challenges, and renew a sense of hope. About the project

Together, the participating professionals addressed more than one-third of the camp’s cabins in a single day. Their contributions supported the camp’s ability to continue providing children with a special place to get away from the medical environments that are often part of their daily lives.

The project continued the longstanding partnership between Ronald McDonald House and the Roofing Alliance. Since 2017, Roofing Alliance and National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) members have donated millions of dollars in roofing materials and labor to assist Ronald McDonald House programs across the country.

Reflecting and looking forward

For contractors, manufacturers, distributors and other roofing professionals, efforts like this show how industry knowledge can serve communities beyond the jobsite. Every volunteer and participating company played a role in protecting the facilities that help make the camp experience possible.

This day of service represented the roofing industry at its best: Professionals coming together, sharing their talents and making a meaningful difference for children and their families.

GAF, North America's largest roofing and waterproofing manufacturer, has partnered with Optimum Roofing to provide a complete roofing system for the White City Community Centre in Saskatchewan, Canada, helping preserve a critical community gathering space while saving public funds that would have otherwise been spent on a roof replacement.

The White City Community Centre serves as a multi-use hub for residents throughout the area, housing the White City Public Library, the White Butte Museum and municipal office spaces. It also hosts a variety of community programs and activities, including fitness and educational programming. The building, which has supported the community since 1991, was in need of a new roof after years of wear and tear. 

Through the partnership between GAF and Optimum Roofing, the community centre will receive a complete roofing system and warranty, with Optimum Roofing, a GAF Master Elite® contractor based in Regina, leading the installation effort. 

"Optimum Roofing had been actively searching for a meaningful opportunity to donate a new roof and give back to the community that has supported us,” said Derek Carson, Sales at Optimum Roofing. “When we learned that the White City Community Centre, located right in our own backyard, was in need of a roof replacement, we knew it was the perfect fit. As a local company, we are proud to support a facility that brings people together and plays such an important role in the community.”

The White City Public Library, part of the Southeast Regional Library system, is among the primary beneficiaries of the project. The library has been serving the community since 1993, and the new roof will help safeguard the building and the services it provides to residents of all ages, including book clubs, preschool storytime, crochet club and language classes.

"Maintaining safe, accessible and well-maintained public facilities is a priority for our community. The White City Community Centre, which is home to the White City Public Library, is a valued gathering place for residents of all ages,” said Ruchelle Himmelspeck, Manager of Parks, Recreation & Culture for the Town of White City. “This project represents an important investment in preserving the facility for years to come. We appreciate the collaboration and support that helped make these improvements possible, ensuring this important community space continues to serve residents for years to come."

August 18 marks a major roofing event for Southern California Roofing Alliance and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times in Mountain Center, California. The event includes five live-action roof installations onsite, while mariachi music and a festive fish taco luncheon by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos take place below.

This is the third big event for the Southern California team since the first took place in 2017. The second one occurred in 2021. This year, Antis Roofing, Shell Roofing, QXO, GAF, Howard and Sons and Gabella lead the charge.

The partnership will continue its service for RMHC roofing as needs arise, adding it to other philanthropic commitments that each partner has in its own community.

Nearly a decade of providing new roofs for one of America’s most beloved charities

The Roofing Alliance was the first collaborative roof donation effort dedicated to a national nonprofit. Antis Roofing and several other Roofing Alliance members stepped up and committed to installing new roofs, or repairing existing roofs, for all 165 Ronald McDonald Houses across the US in 2017. They undertook the first collaborative roof maintenance project for RMHC in 2017, with a particular focus on Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.

Todos los fondos recaudados benefician al Fondo de Becas de la Davis Memorial Foundation, que ofrece apoyo económico a estudiantes de preparatoria, licenciatura y posgrado vinculados con la industria del roofing.

Capacitación de IIBEC 

Después de concluir la expo, el miércoles 30 de septiembre de 2026, el International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC) ofrecerá una jornada especial de capacitación. El programa se desarrollará de 9:00 a.m. a 2:30 p.m. e incluirá dos presentaciones diseñadas para fortalecer los conocimientos de los profesionales de la industria de envolventes de edificios. 

La primera sesión será sobre los fundamentos de los sistemas de techado y otorgará 3.0 CEH de IIBEC. La segunda analizará las actualizaciones 2027 al International Building Code y al International Energy Conservation Code, otorgando 1.5 CEH de IIBEC. Ambas sesiones han sido enviadas para aprobación ante AIA CES.

• Polyglass realizará una demostración en el piso de exhibición de 1:30 p.m. a 2:00 p.m.
