Asphalt roofing facilities across North America recognized for workplace safety.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has completed its annual Accident Prevention Contest and is proud to recognize 82 asphalt roofing manufacturing facilities for their workplace safety, specifically low incident rates among workers.

Facilities that entered the 2025 Accident Prevention Contest were judged based on ARMA criteria derived from the standards set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This information is gathered through quarterly safety data reports from the past calendar year.

“We are proud of the commitment that ARMA members have to a safe work environment for all employees,” said ARMA’s executive vice president Reed Hitchcock. “These facilities continue to maintain high standards in plant health and safety.”

Every year, ARMA’s manufacturer members are invited to participate in the Accident Prevention Contest by submitting data from their entire company, a specific division or an individual plant or mill in North America. Winners are honored in four different categories with a “perfect” score, meaning that zero safety incidents were recorded.

Ken Roberts, Atlas Roofing Corporation, will serve as ARMA’s president through December 31, 2027. Roberts has been president of Atlas Roofing Corporation for the past three years and brings more than 30 years of experience from Masco Corporation. During his tenure at Masco, he held numerous leadership roles, including president of Delta Faucet, president of Masco Canada, vice president of international sales, vice president of specifications and national accounts and vice president of Asian business, among other positions spanning purchasing and manufacturing.

“ARMA has a strong legacy of advocating for asphalt roofing as a high-performance, reliable and sustainable building material,” said Roberts. “I’m honored to serve as president and look forward to working with our members to strengthen industry collaboration and ensure asphalt roofing continues to deliver value to the construction industry.”

The North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) – a regional association whose mission is to serve our roofing professional members promoting ethical standards, insights, innovation and education – announces this year’s board of directors and award winners.

The Davis Memorial Foundation is operated under the auspices of the Western States Roofing Contractors Association

Larry and Mary Davis personified the heart and spirit of the roofing industry community. Committed to supporting the professional standing of roofing contractors, Larry promoted high standards and believed that a well-educated membership was key to the industry's future success. Founder of State Roofing Company in Modesto, California, Larry served as a director on the Western States RCA Board of Directors and was active on several committees, often flying to meetings with his wife Mary in their private airplane. They perished in a plane crash in 1995 when they were returning from a committee meeting. The Foundation was created in their honor.

Competitors and industry professionals from across the country are joining forces to usher in the next generation of roofers, starting with SkillsUSA. 

Roofing made a statement at SkillsUSA 2024. And while this year’s event has already come and gone, people like Rick Damato and John Esbenshade are already planning for and looking forward to 2025 to get students interested in roofing and help bridge the labor shortage gap in the industry. They joined Heidi J. Ellsworth for an episode of Roofing Road Trips® to share the importance of highlighting roofing as a skilled trade at SkillsUSA and how the industry is coming together to celebrate and support the future workforce. 

"What's happening is our workforce, our really best, our highly skilled workforce, those 40s, 50s, 60s folks, they're aging out, they're retiring. And the industry as a whole, and not to be critical, but we've really not done the job we needed to do of replacing them,” shared Rick, National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) recruiter, entrepreneur and dedicated member of the NRCA and Roofing Alliance. 

Roofing wasn’t always a competitive trade at SkillsUSA. In fact, this year was just the second roofing competition held at the national competition. “There was every conceivable skilled trade represented... Every manner of construction except roofing," shared Rick. “And the light bulb sort of went on that roofing has never been recognized as a specialty trade in career and technical education in this country. So I didn't really start anything. I just discovered this huge gap, and I saw it as a real opportunity when it comes to workforce development." 

And what an opportunity it has become not only for the roofing industry, but for career and technical education (CTE) schools as well. "NRCA makes our TRAC (training for roof application careers), curriculum completely free to any and all career and technical education students in the country that want it, including those who are in correctional education, known as justice impacted students,” shared John, NRCA director of workforce development. “There's this tidal wave of momentum and excitement about the progress that is very visual for the first time. And it's very much snowballing, it feels like, on a week-to-week basis. It's a really exciting thing to be able to be a part of.” 

This snowball doesn’t stop at the curriculum in schools. Professionals from across the industry want to be a part of SkillUSA and usher in the next generation of roofers. Like many other industry events, SkillsUSA is where everybody comes together, whether they’re competitors, large or small companies or individual contractors – it's a full industry event. 

The Roofing Alliance has been a strong supporter as one of the first donors when they helped NRCA get involved with SkillsUSA, and in 2024 they committed to donating $50,000 per year for the next three years. Other stakeholders have stepped up to donate time, materials and labor to make the event a success: ABC Supply, Atlas Roofing, Beacon Building Products, Georgia-Pacific Building Products, IB Roof Systems, Jobba Trade Technologies, Johns Manville, National Roofing Partners, RoofersCoffeeShop, Roofing Corp of America, Roofing Contractor, SRS Distribution, TAMKO Building Products, Service First Solutions, Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3), Sunbelt Rentals and National Women in Roofing, among others. 

It takes a village, or in this case an industry, to make this event happen. From donating materials, volunteering their time and getting students, teachers and parents excited about roofing to working the booth and organizing the event, people from all over the industry are coming together to support, train and welcome the next generation of roofers, and SkillsUSA is a big part of that. John shared, “After you see it for the first time, it's different. You think about how we fit, how our industry fits into this career and technical education space with all these other trades that we are competing against for skilled labor. And when you're there for the first time, you are not going to think about it the same way again. And that's a really important thing to get out.”

The 2024 competition will include student contestants from 12 states competing to win the commercial roofing thermoplastic competition. 

The roofing industry has come together to help fund a larger Career Technical Education (CTE) program lead by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). With the first focus on SkillsUSA happening June 24-28, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia the industry has donated over $170,000 just for 2024 to help not only fund a roofing presence at SkillsUSA but also support continuing CTE activity. 

This year’s roofing exposure and student competition is expected to be greatly expanded from the 2023 national competition that featured competitors in the thermoplastic roofing competition from four states. The 2024 competition will include student contestants from 12 states competing to win the commercial roofing thermoplastic competition. 

Helping to make this possible is the Roofing Alliance, who demonstrated their commitment to fostering education and attracting new talent to the roofing industry by pledging $150,000 over three years to fund Career Technical Education (CTE) initiatives. This significant contribution enables the NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee to make substantial strides in educating and drawing the next generation of roofing professionals. 

The NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee has a subcommittee that works to secure funding for various CTE initiatives within the roofing industry. These initiatives include participation in SkillsUSA, the Association for Career & Technical Education (ACTE), and the Correctional Education Association (CEA), among others. The NRCA CTE/Workforce Development committee members and volunteers are dedicated to ongoing funding efforts to build and expand CTE outreach. This initiative is supported by multiple sources, including NRCA, industry partners and the Roofing Alliance. 

As noted, NRCA will host the Roofing Pavilion at the 2024 SkillsUSA NLCS “Techspo” from June 24-28, 2024. This will be NRCA's second time showcasing roofing (beyond a tabletop display) at this premier skills competition in the career and technical education sector. 

The Roofing Pavilion, a 20’ x 70’ space will feature a roofing project display with a 20’x40’ roofing project on a staired scaffold featuring a thermoplastic welding display and demonstration with an interactive competition for all SkillsUSA participants.  Competitors will also have access to product samples of steep roofing products, including asphalt shingles, tile and metal along with an estimating experience demonstrating roofing estimating software and additional interactive goggle technology. 

Several industry leading companies have committed to sponsoring the 2024 SkillsUSA program. With a combined contribution of over $120,000 in funds that were then matched with $50,000 per year for three years by the Roofing Alliance. Donations were provided by:
