Contractors look to training, innovation and prefabrication to overcome persistent labor shortages.

As the roofing industry continues to grapple with an entrenched labor shortage, manufacturers and contractors alike are seeking smarter, more efficient ways to tackle jobs. One solution is gaining traction: tapered insulation systems designed for labor and cost savings. That was the focus of a recent Coffee Conversations, hosted by Heidi J. Ellsworth and featuring industry leaders from Hunter Panels and Delta Rep Group.

“There’s a contractor shortage besides the aging labor force,” said Wayne Heironimus of Delta Rep Group. “You don’t see a lot of young people being drawn to roofing. We’re trying to do more with less people.”

The panel consisted of industry experts, each looking for solutions to meet the labor demands. One panelist, Justin Andrews, commercial roofing sales manager at Hunter Panels, noted that the labor crisis is no longer about just skilled versus unskilled labor. It’s a broader issue of recruitment, retention and perception. “There’s competition from other trades and there’s competition from other industries outside the building industry,” Justin said. “Then there’s the perception of the work and the roofing industry in general.”

What’s emerging as a practical answer isn’t just more training, but smarter design choices and prefabrication. Tapered insulation systems are engineered offsite and delivered ready to install, reducing the need for complex field cutting and speeding up application. Justin shared, “We design the tapered layout for folks, but we’re also willing to follow it from start to finish and deal with problems that come up.”

Tim Rood, tapered department manager at Carlisle Construction Materials, broke it down further: “If you get handed a shop drawing and are told to put it on a roof, that labor force is a lot harder to find. So, we have some tips and tricks to make it a little easier.” Among them: extended panel systems that significantly reduce adhesive layers, waste and man-hours.

Dawn Holsinger, co-founder of Delta Rep Group, added that even long-time roofers are beginning to see the benefits of transitioning from custom field cuts to prefabricated components. “You have a lot of old school guys who are used to cutting sumps in the field,” Dawn said. “Except it’s not going to be engineered and done the way it is in a controlled setting.”

Even as the panelists acknowledged the steep road ahead, they painted a hopeful picture, where smart design, collaborative training and thoughtful recruiting could reshape roofing into a more sustainable and attractive career path.

Manufacturer’s representatives have a lot of options when it comes to the products they represent. See why this rep group believes in USG Securock® Brand and how they’ve helped take them to market.

Delta Rep Group in Florida was the first manufacturer’s rep group to help take USG Corporation's Securock® Brand Roof Board portfolio to market. Wayne Heironimus, managing partner of Delta Rep Group, tells us it’s been a huge success. In a recent interview with Heidi J. Ellsworth, Wayne discussed some of the products his company works with and why he believes so strongly in the brands he represents.

On the surface, a simple cover board may not seem important, but if you’ve worked in commercial roofing, you understand the protection it provides. Wayne tells us, “Code requires that commercial roofs or flat roofs be insulated. That polyiso insulation is expensive, it needs to be protected. That cover board goes over those roof systems to provide a substrate to apply your roofing membrane to, and it protects the insulating material under it.”

Contractors love USG Securock® Brand because its roof boards are easier to install and friendlier to use. Wayne continues, “There’s no itch, it provides better adhesion, higher tensile strength. It’s overall a high-performance product compatible with just about every type of roof system.”

He tells us he remembers the first pallets that were sold and how excited they were about it. The competition had been about 15 years ahead of them, and in only 15 months, they were selling an incredible line. “With that product, we’re giving the customers enhanced roof performance, fire resistance and it reduces maintenance. It adds everything to the roof,” Wayne shares.

As a rep, Wayne spends a good deal of time with his customers, listening to their unique needs and hoping to solve whatever problem they present. By representing USG Securock® Brand and other manufacturers, you can trust that he believes in these products as solutions. USG is a market leader in wallboard and gypsum products and will meet your need for any application.

Learn more about how one rep firm helps take products to market and why this polyurethane sealant was a no brainer to represent.

Wayne Heironimus is a managing partner of Delta Rep Group, which serves the state of Florida and operates in both commercial and residential roofing. In a recent article, he shares details about the unique role of manufacturer’s representatives in the roofing industry. In their role, they represent several products and help take them to market, acting as an additional selling point for companies. In an interview with Heidi J. Ellsworth, we asked him to talk more about some of the products he represents and how manufacturers' reps choose which products to stand behind.

When picking which products to represent, he follows the three A’s: Acceptability, Affordability and Availability. Of the products his team represents, Wayne says, “Each product and system we represent really needs to offer something to the market.... But on top of that, it’s a very competitive market. So, the product needs to be proven, it needs to be innovative.”

One such product is MasterSeal NP 1, originally a product of Master Builder Solutions, which was recently acquired by Sika Corporation. As Wayne explains, this product is not new to the market. It’s a high performance, gun-grade polyurethane sealant used in all forms of construction and waterproofing applications. It’s an excellent waterproofing sealant, has excellent adhesion and elasticity, and is resistant to UV radiation.

He continues, “Everybody in roofing knows NP1. And during the acquisitions, it got very strong in waterproofing but moved away from roofing. Our mission was to get it back into the roofing channels... So, when you talk about the value that a rep brings in, you only have limited time in front of a customer and you talk about all the attributes [of the product], and boil it down to, it moves, it sticks and it lasts.”

NP 1 is a product he trusts and follows the three A’s. The bottom line for selling: “NP 1 moves with the building, with the joint it sticks to, and it lasts. It’s the standard in the industry... It’s backed technology that has been around forever.” They’ve done a great job getting it back into roofing, and even used it in training on caulking and sealing buildings at the University of South Florida.

Learn how this innovative solution to a common problem has created a new standard for the industry.

TUBOS Inc. is owned by a very innovative gentleman named Kevin Morris out of Largo, Florida with his partner Rick Maddox. They are represented by Delta Rep Group, a manufacturer’s representative throughout the state of Florida. Recently, Heidi J. Ellsworth caught up with Wayne Heironimus, a managing partner of Delta Rep Group, to discuss some of the products he represents and his unique role in the roofing industry. The prefabricated vent pipe extensions from TUBOS are one such product he not only represents, but firmly stands behind.

Wayne gives us some background on Kevin and Rick’s company. “They were sheet metal people, and they identified a problem on a roof. And that was, when you add insulation to a roof to bring it to code, there’s pipe stacks, pipe vent extensions that need to be extended further. The code says that soil stacks have to be eight inches above the roof, but if you add four inches of insulation, they’re no longer eight inches above and have to be extended.”

Before TUBOS came along, the roofer would come up with any solution they could think of, buying materials from Home Depot or a plumbing supply store and essentially fabricating your own pipe extension on the roof. Not only does this mean that every extension was engineered differently, but it cost time and money to find a solution. Kevin and Rick came up with a brilliant solution and now we can count on TUBOS across the industry. Wayne continues, “TUBOS are prefabricated plumbing vent pipe extensions. They’re user-friendly, they’re quick and the quality is assured in each one that they’re all the same. They ensure that you comply with local building codes and they’re easy to install. They have design simplicity and they’re very, very economical.”

Wayne has had the opportunity of being with TUBOS since Kevin began developing the product. He tells us, “I watched it from the very beginning, and it moved from selling them to roofers and as a fix to coming up with patents, specifications, detail drawings, product data sheets. They’re available at over 550 roofing distributors throughout the country... [Roofing contractors] love them because it standardizes what they’re doing, and they can make the fix and reduce callbacks.”

See how easy it is to install TUBOS vent extensions and don’t just take it from Wayne, hear why contractors love this product.

Manufacturer’s representatives play a unique role in the roofing industry. Learn how one rep firm takes care of the Florida market.

In the roofing industry, manufacturer’s representative groups help the world go round. Heidi J. Ellsworth recently caught up with Wayne Heironimus of Delta Rep Group to talk about his role as a manufacturer’s rep and how he helps take products to market. This is the first of a series of articles to discuss the importance of these companies in the industry and some of the hot products to look out for.

Wayne is a managing partner of Delta Rep Group, working closely with his other two partners, Dawn Holsinger and Justin Burnham. Delta Rep Group covers the state of Florida and operates in both commercial and residential roofing, as well as within the building envelope arena. They represent several products, including, “USG Securock, that's a cover board, it enhances the performance of roofs, Hunter Panels, insulation, polyisocyanurate insulation, Progressive Material silicone coatings, Tarco self-adhered underlayments, Tubos pipe extensions and of course, Sika, which just recently acquired Master Builder Solutions, their adhesive and caulking line and other building envelope components.”

Since manufacturer’s reps act as a second, or sometimes only, selling point for companies, they have to stand behind the products they represent as much as the manufacturer producing them. When asked about how they pick the manufacturers and products to represent in the industry, Wayne talks about a rule he calls the three A’s: Acceptability, Affordability and Availability. He explains, “[Florida has] some of the strictest building codes in the country. And acceptability in Florida is defined by being building code compliant... Availability is defined as having effective supply chains to get the product to the customer. And affordability, of course, is where the value exceeds the cost.”

When it comes to affordability, Wayne continues, “A lot of that is the manufacturers' rep's responsibility to make people understand there is greater value even though the product might be a little more expensive.” Manufacturers reps are often the face of the product to the customer, and when it comes to selling, Wayne says it comes down to the three B’s. “You need to Be smart, Be brief and Be Gone.” During a sales call, Wayne recommends, “Bundling material solutions that leaves your message. When you go through the traditional method of listing what you rep, the message is lost. Understanding what your clients and customers really want is a solution provider. A trusted advisor that solves problems and makes things better. And that's our goal.”

With over 125 roofing distributors in their territory, Wayne believes their most important role at Delta Rep Group is listening and understanding the customers’ needs. We are able to offer them the best products and systems from companies we stand behind, which improves customer satisfaction, and everyone wins. Don’t miss the next article in this series when we dive into the amazing products represented by Delta Rep Group and how they’re taking them to market.

Find out why contractors simply cannot get enough of TUBOS pipe extenders for their roofing projects!

Wayne Heironimus of Delta Rep Group, recently sat down to chat with Coffee Shop President Heidi J. Ellsworth to discuss his company’s investment in the TUBOS brand and how their products have exceeded customer expectations.

As a manufacturer representation firm focused on representing the building industries based in Florida, Delta Rep Group looks for manufacturers and products that are affordable, acceptable and available across the market. One such quality brand that they invested in was TUBOS.

Created by Kevin Morris and Rick Maddox, based out of Largo, Florida, TUBOS was designed after the co-founders identified a problem on a roof and determined how to fix it. The problem? Wayne explained, “When you add insulation to a roof to bring it to code, there's plumbing pipe that need to be extended. This code that we have to live by says that soil stacks have to be eight inches above the roof. Well, they're eight inches above the roof and you add four inches of insulation. They're no longer eight inches above the roof. There are only four, and they have to be extended.”

With this problem in mind, the TUBOS founders created a brilliant solution, a pipe extension that was easy to install and durable. Contractors no longer had to come up with a do-it-yourself solution on the spot that might not yield a quality outcome. Now, they had a quick, economical fix designed to raise the pipe effectively in one simple step.

TUBOS pipe extensions turned out to be everything that Wayne was looking for: an affordable option for contractors to have on hand, plenty available from most distributors and accepted by building standards and regulations.

For any roofer looking for a go-to solution for pipe extensions, TUBOS is it. Wayne commented, “They're user-friendly, they're quick, the quality is assured in each one that they're all the same, they ensure that you comply with local building codes, meet all the requirements, and they're easy to install. They have design simplicity, and they're very, very economical.”

Learn about the three A’s that identify potential success in a brand or product and how to meet them!

In a recent interview, Wayne Heironimus of Delta Rep Group met with Heidi J. Ellsworth to discuss his work with the company and how they determine which groups to work with and represent. Delta Rep Group is a Florida-based manufacturer representation firm with a focus on the building industries.

Wayne mentioned that there are three A’s that he looks for in manufacturers and products that indicate their success potential. They must be acceptable, affordable and available.

1 - Acceptable

Manufacturers and products that are acceptable are defined as those that meet and comply with state or regional building codes. Wayne explained the necessity behind this criterion, stating, “We have some of the strictest building codes probably globally or at least in the country. And acceptability in Florida is defined by being building code compliant. Have your systems and your products carrying a Florida product approval code. And the Florida building code is the law. You must have that.”

2 - Affordable

Affordability is another important factor. The value of the product or service offered must exceed the cost of creation or operation. If a product is a little more expensive than others on the market, it is crucial that the manufacturer representatives effectively communicate to the market why the product is valuable and is worth the cost.

3 - Available

Availability centers around the assurance that the supply chain is effective and reliable. Manufacturers must be able to get their products to the customer in a timely and consistent manner. Customers want to purchase from reliable and trustworthy manufacturers.

With his criteria of the three A’s as a guide, Wayne has been able to find manufacturers in the home improvement industries to represent, and one of those companies that Delta Rep Group works with is TUBOS.

Based out of Largo, Florida, TUBOS manufactures vent pipe extensions used in roofing projects. Customers love the TUBOS products because they are available, affordable and acceptable.

“They're user-friendly, they're quick, the quality is assured in each one that they're all the same,” said Wayne. “They ensure that you comply with local building codes, meet all the requirements and they're easy to install. They have design simplicity, and they are very economical. I think they can make something out of all that.”

Hear two experienced professionals in the roofing industry give their fascinating insight about being women in the industry in a new episode of Roofing Road Trips.

Roofing is not just a man’s industry, and women like Danielle Pack of USG and Dawn Holsinger of Delta Rep Group are trailblazing the way for women to be seen, recognized and celebrated in the roofing world. Host, Heidi J. Ellsworth, sat down with these two incredible women to share their stories and advice for being a woman in roofing in a recent Roofing Road Trips episode.

One great piece of advice that Danielle shared was that you shouldn’t be afraid to ask questions. She said it’s important to say things like, “I don’t know, teach me.” She continued, “And when you say those things, people have been overwhelmingly supportive, more so than you would think.”

Getting to that point where she could ask questions wasn’t an overnight revelation though. “It's not just a smooth-sailing path with no bumps in the roads or hard times,” Danielle said. “It was hard to put myself out there. It was not always easy, but once I started doing that, and then the networking, ... they kept building, I created, basically, my own momentum to keep going.” Dawn added, “Asking questions doesn't show weakness. It does not show weakness. It shows strength.”

As you start your journey in roofing, it’s not a bad idea to have a mentor to turn to for advice and to ask questions. Dawn pointed out that just because you are a woman, doesn’t mean your mentor needs to be a woman. Dawn’s mentor for getting into the industry was her business partner, Wayne. It’s all about someone making you feel included and accepted. “Once you have someone that can bring you in the industry as a woman, when there weren't women, I felt pretty readily accepted,” said Dawn.

Get a leg up on the competition by establishing relationships with manufacturers’ representatives.

Representatives do more than just try to sell manufacturers’ products to potential customers, they also aim to create long-term customer relationships. Critical to the job of the manufacturer representative is to take care of the customer and build long-term relationships. Thus, the manufacturer representative is an invaluable resource for the contractor as a high-level of support and is vital to the manufacturer-contractor relationships.

“The key factor many times is that relationship part, the extras. The extra mile, the extra yard, the extra things that we can do for you,” says MARCO‘s Randy Chaffee in Season 4, Episode 1 of Roofing Road Trips. “I think for contractors, the better relationship they have with the reps for the different manufacturers, especially ones that they use a lot, they're going to be able to make their decisions better.”

When contractors have a good relationship with their manufacturer’s representatives, they can get an inside look at what a distributor has in stock. Representatives know exactly what materials are available, which ones have been ordered and which ones will be in soon. They know what is happening in the industry and the cutting-edge solution to nearly all roofing woes. They are willing to share all of this information with the contractor.

Representatives usually work in one industry, but because they represent different manufacturers, they have access to different supplies that contractors need. “There's going to be something that you could probably use a little help with. So as a rep having multiple lines, I can find that niche right now,” Randy says.

Working with a manufacturer’s representative is also incredibly helpful for smaller manufacturing companies. Marianne Sumter from Wil-Mar for example, cited working with a manufacturer’s rep as a highlight of the changing industry in a Roofing Road Trip episode. “See, I have no salespeople, it's only me,” Marianne explains. “So he goes out selling the products that he represents, one of which is ours, and it's brought in a lot of business for us. I'm really pleased with that. I really am."

Marianne highlights that a manufacturer's representatives are the ones with the information on what's happening in the industry, the ones who also have a lot of solutions and an understanding of the tools you should be using.

Further, a manufacturer’s representative provides you with a wealth of information from training to backup information you might not have. “We really believe in training and we're committed to it and educating the customer,” says Delta Rep Group’s Wayne Heironimus in Season 3, Episode 38 of Roofing Road Trips. “You have the right products and they have the right support.”

Wayne goes on to add that “your local rep can help designers pick the right products, can provide product knowledge and to the applicator, or contractor, we can provide training, product information, and be the eyes on the job. We can interface between the project and the manufacturer,” he says. “There's a lot of things that reps bring value to.”

A manufacturer’s rep is all about providing that extra level of support to help your business shine. By building strong relationships with the manufacturer’s reps you set yourself, your crew and your company up for success.
