Why every contractor should nominate an employee for the Roofing Alliance MVP Awards.

Every year our industry talks about labor shortages. We discuss recruiting, training, wages and benefits, all of which are incredibly important. But after sitting in the audience at the Roofing Alliance Most Valuable Player Awards during the International Roofing Expo (IRE) this past year, I was reminded that one of the most powerful tools we have for retaining great employees isn’t a new program or a bigger paycheck. It is simply making people feel valued.

As I watched the awards ceremony unfold, I found myself looking around the room as much as I watched the stage. Families were beaming with pride. Company owners were smiling ear to ear. Coworkers were cheering for one another. It wasn’t just another awards presentation. It was a celebration of the people who quietly make our industry stronger every single day.

The roofing industry has always been built on hardworking individuals who show up before sunrise, solve problems when no one else can and take pride in doing the job right. They lead crews, mentor younger workers, protect their teammates and represent their companies with professionalism. Most of them never ask for recognition. In fact, many would probably rather avoid the spotlight altogether. That is exactly why the Roofing Alliance MVP Awards are so special. They shine a light on the people who rarely seek it but deserve it more than anyone.

As contractors, we spend a great deal of time talking about company culture. We know it matters because today’s workforce has choices. Skilled employees want more than a paycheck. They want to work somewhere they feel respected, appreciated and connected to a team. They want to know that their contributions matter and that someone notices the effort they put in every day. Recognition is one of the simplest ways to build that kind of culture, yet it is often overlooked.

Watching the MVP Awards made that crystal clear. Every person recognized on that stage represented much more than individual achievement. They represented companies that took the time to tell their employees, “You matter.” That message resonates far beyond one evening at the International Roofing Expo. It comes back to the office, the warehouse and the jobsite. It becomes part of the company’s story and reinforces the kind of culture every contractor hopes to build.

One of the most memorable moments of the evening was watching the team from Wagner Roofing, who sat in front of our table, celebrate as foreman Ariel Lemus was recognized for Outstanding Performance and Leadership. You could feel the pride coming from everyone who was there to support him. After more than two decades with Wagner Roofing, Ariel has become known not only for his exceptional craftsmanship but also for mentoring the next generation of sheet metal roofers. It was obvious that his company wasn’t simply celebrating an employee. It was a celebration of someone who has helped shape their culture for years.

Another inspiring story was Kenny Rodriguez, warehouse foreman for OMG Building Products, who received the Outstanding Community Involvement Award. Kenny’s leadership extends well beyond the workplace. Along with mentoring coworkers and helping drive operational excellence, he serves as a pastor and volunteers throughout his community. His story reminded everyone in the room that great employees don’t stop making a difference when they leave work each day.

The evening culminated with the announcement of the Best of the Best Award, presented to Armando Landeros Solis, superintendent for Commercial Roofers Inc. After 25 years with the company, Armando has worked his way from apprentice to one of the organization’s most respected leaders. His humility, enthusiasm, commitment to mentoring his crew and dedication to both his company and his community made him a perfect example of what the MVP program represents. Watching his coworkers celebrate his accomplishment was every bit as inspiring as seeing him accept the award.

As I left the ceremony, I couldn’t stop thinking about what those moments mean back at each of these companies. Imagine being the employee who returns home after receiving one of the roofing industry’s highest honors. Imagine the pride your coworkers feel knowing one of their own was recognized on a national stage. Those experiences strengthen culture in ways that no employee handbook or mission statement ever could.

The Roofing Alliance is now accepting nominations for its next class of Most Valuable Player Awards, and I sincerely hope contractors across the industry take advantage of the opportunity. We all have exceptional people working within our organizations whose stories deserve to be told. Think about the individual everyone depends on, the person who mentors new employees, keeps the crew motivated and quietly leads by example. Taking the time to nominate them may be one of the most meaningful investments you make in your culture all year.

We had a great time sharing stories and photos over social media with our roofing community!

National Roofing Week is an annual event hosted by the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) that aims to raise awareness of the roofing professionals who keep our communities safe and secure. The event also acts as a way to build community with other professionals, both near you and across the country.

Participation in National Roofing Week is primarily conducted online by posting photos and videos through the #NationalRoofingWeek2026 hashtag. And NRCA has created themes for each day of National Roofing Week to guide posts.

Sunday – Kickoff

The week kicked off with posts about the importance of roofers. NRCA started everything with a post sharing the schedule for the week and some highlights from last year’s National Roofing Week! Here at The Coffee Shops™ we joined in the fun on all our social media pages, making sure to thank the coating installers, roofing professionals and contractors who make our community amazing.

Monday – Signature projects

For the Monday theme, NRCA invited National Roofing Week participants to share photos showcasing their company’s signature residential and commercial projects. There were too many amazing projects posted to put them all here, but some that stood out to us came from QXO, Sika and Eagle Roofing Products!

QXO’s post was a carousel of some of their customers projects, including one from Toitures Scott, one from Nedlaw Group and one from RUHS in California. Likewise, Eagle Roofing Products’ post showcased signature projects featuring their concrete roof tiles from across the country.

As for Sika, they took the opportunity to shine the spotlight on their 2025 Sika Project of the Year award winners, which includes stunning projects like the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center project in Los Angeles, California and the South Station Tower project in Boston.

Tuesday – Charitable projects

The next day of National Roofing Week was all about giving back, and the National Women in Roofing (NWIR) Oregon Council stole the show with a free roof!

The replacement went to a community member in need, which is an incredible reminder of the power our industry has to do good.

They put it best in their post:

Seeing contractors, manufacturers, distributors and industry partners come together with a shared purpose — without competition, without agendas, and focused solely on helping someone else — is truly inspiring. For one day, company names and logos took a back seat to teamwork, generosity and service.

Projects like this showcase the heart of our industry. The relationships we build, the willingness to lend a hand, and the collective impact we can make when we work together are some of the best parts of being in roofing.

NWIR extended huge thanks to industry partners, like Malarkey Roofing Products, ABC Supply, SRS Building Products, Owens Corning, Bliss Roofing and Raindrop Roofing NW, for making this incredible charitable project possible.

Wednesday – Employee appreciation

The midpoint of the week was all about the people who get things done – the employees that keep our industry moving. For this theme, the #NationalRoofingWeek2026 hashtag was flooded with pictures and appreciations for hardworking workers around the country.

Drexel Metals posted some behind-the-scenes of their team hard at work, captioning it, “To everyone who continues to show up ready to learn, teach and push the industry forward: thank you. Your commitment is what drives stronger partnerships, better projects and continued progress year after year.”

IKO Industries and CertainTeed also posted, shouting out the ROOFPROS who get the job done every day and recognizing the “craftsmanship, innovation, and dedication of the teams who help bring CertainTeed products and solutions to life” respectively.

Thursday – Training and learning

For Thursday, NRCA chose training as the theme, inviting contractors and companies to share the ways they keep learning and growing on the job. For this theme, GAF joined the party, sharing an incredible milestone from their GAF Roofing Academy – since 2020, the tuition-free program has helped more than 3,000 individuals find employment in the roofing industry!

And this is just one of the many stories added to the #NationalRoofingWeek2026 hashtag! The Durable Restoration Company posted about the hard work their craftspeople put into their apprenticeship program and QXO shared how they connect their team with everything from stand downs to plant tours.

Friday – Celebration

And you can’t have National Roofing Week without taking the time to celebrate the amazing industry we are all a part of! For this theme, the Roofing Contractors Association of Texas (RCAT) took their followers on a trip down memory lane, sharing the “conferences, tournaments, regional events and industry gatherings where Texas roofing professionals connect, learn and celebrate together.”

Drexel Metals also posted, sharing a common sentiment of thanks related to the power of the industry, “From the shop floor to the jobsite, your dedication, craftsmanship and collaboration are truly what make a lasting impact. We’re proud to be part of an industry built on innovation, resilience and strong partnerships.”

Saturday – Wrap up

Overall, this year’s National Roofing Week was a resounding success. From everyone that posted to event sponsors like International Roofing Expo, Georgia-Pacific Building Products, SRS Distribution, Roofing Alliance and SOPREMA, it was all made possible thanks to the incredible roofing community.

The Coffee Shops crew already can’t wait for next year’s roofing week! As Atlas Roofing put eloquently in their final #NationalRoofingWeek2026 post, “This week gave us the opportunity to celebrate the people, organizations and partnerships that make the roofing industry such a rewarding one to be part of. Here’s to another year of collaboration, innovation and success.”

Ellsworth shares that she is looking forward to helping guide strategy and advocacy for the roofing industry in these new roles!

Since 1886, the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) has advocated and support professionals across the construction industry through education, training and advocacy. NRCA operates through a board structure, with 35-40 directors and nine executive committee officers, all of whom are chosen through a nomination process.

This year, we are thrilled to share that our very own Heidi J. Ellsworth will be joining the board! She was announced at the 139th NRCA Convention back in January, along with Greg Arnold, Matt Atkinson, Alexandra Chacon, Eric Dosch, Bryson Galloway, Dave Hesse, Anthony Kahny, Josh Kelly, Gregory Malcolm, Jonathan Reader and Tim Stephens.

This incredible group will serve for the next three years, focusing on supporting strategy development and ensuring that the interests of NRCA members remain at the heart of operations. They will be led by an executive committee that includes Chad Collins as chairman of the board, Sherri Miles as chairman of the board-elect, Michelle Boykin as vice-chairman, Scott Kawulok as vice-chairman and Lynn Price as vice-chairman.

The Roofing Alliance is NRCA’s 501(C)(3) foundation and “serves as a catalyst for long-term growth, leadership and excellence across the roofing industry.” Their work includes everything from funding research and organizing workforce development sessions to coordinating philanthropic outreach and developing education resources.

Overseeing all of these operations is their Board of Trustees, which is composed of “210 dedicated, diverse and thoughtful roofing contractors, manufacturers, suppliers and distributors, service providers and industry professionals united in their commitment to shape, strengthen and advance the roofing industry.” Heidi will be joining this distinguished leadership group for the 2026-27 cycle, under the leadership of Sherri Miles and John Campbell.

Looking ahead, Heidi cannot wait to start making a difference:

The SkillsUSA 2026 Championship will connect students, educators, contractors and manufacturers through hands-on skilled trades competitions.

After a year of honing their skills and participating in local competitions, students from across the country are set to compete at the culminating event: the SkillsUSA 2026 Championship. Taking place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta from June 1-5, 2026, the event brings together more that 6,700 state champions competing across 114 skilled and leadership contests as part of the broader National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC).

On top of providing the platform for students to compete and showcase their talent, the SkillsUSA program builds the next generation of skilled professionals and elevates the value of careers in the trades. Roofing continues to expand its presence at the event as students can explore career opportunities and compete in roofing-related challenges including Commercial Roofing and Teamwork. According to the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA), the competitions are designed to connect career and technical education students with real-world industry opportunities while helping address the skilled labor shortage facing roofing contractors nationwide.

Here at RoofersCoffeeShop®, we are excited to be a sponsor of the NRCA Roofing Pavilion, the event’s central hub for students and CTE teachers to connect with industry professionals on training and career opportunities.

Additional sponsors supporting the NRCA booth include ABC Supply, Central States Manufacturing, Georgia-Pacific Building Products, Johns Manville, Elevate™, IB Roof Systems™, Leister, National Roofing Partners, National Women in Roofing (NWIR), QXO, Roofing Alliance, Roofing Technology Think Tank (RT3), SRS Distribution and TAMKO®. This robust participation reflects industry-wide collaboration to help SkillsUSA continue to grow as a pipeline for skilled professionals entering the trades.

The SkillsUSA Championships have become a critical recruiting and education platform for the roofing industry. NRCA notes if even 5% of SkillsUSA students entered roofing careers, the industry could gain more than 5,000 new workers annually.

Understanding key updates and insights on the initiatives shaping the future of roofing as I prepare to join the NRCA board in June 2026.

One of the most important resources we have in the roofing industry are our associations. They bring contractors, manufacturers, distributors and service providers together to solve challenges, advocate for our businesses and help move the industry forward. I am proud to be joining the board of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) in June of 2026 and as I continue to learn about new initiatives, ongoing challenges and meaningful advocacy efforts, I want to share this information with the industry.

One of the things I appreciate most about NRCA is the communication and transparency coming from leadership. McKay Daniels, CEO of NRCA, consistently keeps members informed about what is happening behind the scenes, not just the wins, but also the challenges and priorities shaping the future of roofing.

In a recent update to industry executive members, McKay shared, “Here is a rundown of some of the things the association has been up to recently. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions, ideas or suggestions. NRCA is a volunteer-led organization… your input really matters.”

That is exactly how McKay leads, with open arms and an open mind. It is a leadership style rooted in collaboration and listening, recognizing that some of the best ideas come directly from contractors and roofing professionals working in the field every day. Here are just a few updates from his recent communication and why they matter to the roofing industry.

If there is one issue touching every contractor today, it is workforce. Whether companies are looking for labor, training future leaders or helping crews advance professionally, NRCA continues to invest heavily in workforce development and education. McKay shared that the association recently “delivered multiple CERTA Train-the-Trainer and private classes for members” while also completing PROCertification exams to help contractors meet project specification requirements. These programs continue to strengthen professionalism in roofing while creating career pathways for workers entering the trade.

At the same time, NRCA is expanding its reach with the next generation. NRCA staff attended SkillsUSA competitions in California, Texas and Washington, with Texas and Washington representingnew state participation. That momentum is continuing nationally as NRCA prepares to support a record number of roofing competitors at the 2026 SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference in Atlanta, Georgia this June. The growing participation reflects increasing awareness of roofing as a viable and rewarding career path and highlights the association’s commitment to introducing young people to opportunities in the roofing trades.

By showing students what roofing careers can offer, NRCA is helping build awareness of an industry filled with opportunity, innovation and long-term career growth.

NRCA also continues its commitment to education beyond the rooftop. The association recently hosted its annual LegalCon Virtual seminar, addressing issues contractors are navigating every day. McKay noted topics ranging from immigration issues and managing risk in roofing contracts to using telemetry fleet data as a legal advantage. LegalCon has become a trusted annual event, helping members stay informed on legal, operational and business risks impacting roofing companies.

Of course, workforce conversations naturally lead to advocacy and this continues to be one of NRCA’s strongest areas of focus. Roofing Day in D.C. recently brought together 200 roofing professionals to meet with lawmakers across 158 House and Senate offices, advocating for workforce solutions and affordable housing policies.

McKay also reported that “NRCA staff met with senior White House officials on immigration reform tied to security and workforce needs,” while the association endorsed the Workforce Apprenticeship Growth and Education Support (WAGES) Act, legislation proposing payroll tax credits to offset apprentice wages and training expenses. These efforts matter because advocacy happening in Washington D.C. directly impacts the future workforce available to roofing contractors across the country.

Safety and worker wellbeing also remain front and center. NRCA served as a lead partner for the National Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction while continuing to educate contractors on fall prevention resources, including NRCA’s Roof Deck Integrity Assessment Tool. During Mental Health Awareness Month, the association also highlighted mental health resources and worker wellbeing initiatives, reinforcing that jobsite safety extends beyond physical hazards.

The Roofing Alliance, the foundation for the industry, is also celebrating its 30th anniversary this year while continuing to make a tremendous impact through scholarships, research and education. From supporting students pursuing roofing-related careers to investing in long-term industry research, the Alliance continues to help strengthen roofing for future generations. McKay shared that the Alliance approved $114,000 in scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year supporting 23 students, while more than 600 professionals have completed roofing training through Clemson University.

Research through the Roofing Alliance is also uncovering important insights into jobsite culture and safety. McKay noted that ongoing research is showing that “inconsistent safety behavior is driven more by risk perception and workplace culture than by rule awareness,” reinforcing that strong safety cultures are built through leadership, trust and engagement, not simply enforcement.

Technical leadership continues to be another core focus. McKay reported that the Manual Update Committee recently completed the next update to The NRCA Roofing Manual, with the 2027 Membrane Roof Systems volume now in design and printing. These resources continue to provide contractors with trusted technical guidance and best practices.

As I prepare to join the NRCA board, I continue to be impressed by the depth of work happening every day on behalf of roofing professionals. Associations matter because they amplify our voices, create opportunities and help guide the future of our industry. I look forward to sharing more updates from NRCA as together we continue building a stronger future for roofing.
