Learn why successful technology decisions in commercial roofing depend on aligning leadership, operations and field execution from the outset.

For commercial roofing contractors, the decision to adopt new technology rarely starts with software. It starts with a more fundamental question: whether a system can support how the business actually operates and whether the team is ready to evolve alongside it. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, Heidi J. Ellsworth examined that challenge with Brad Sutter of Sutter Roofing and Aaron Weinstein of Terial, discussing how technology adoption should be seen as an operational commitment rather than a transactional purchase.

That distinction reflects a broader reality across the industry. Contractors continue to pursue better visibility, tighter communication and more predictable performance, yet those outcomes are not delivered by technology alone. They depend on how clearly a company defines its operational gaps, how aligned its leadership is around change and how effectively a platform integrates work across the office and the field. Aaron explained, “There is a widening gap and there has been a widening gap between industries and their access to technology.”

Brad described that process as one shaped by experience. Drawing on years of industry roundtables and peer discussions, he noted that contractors often expect new systems to solve problems automatically. In practice, implementation tends to surface deeper issues, inconsistencies in process, gaps in standardization and inefficiencies that had previously gone unaddressed. Brad noted, “People just don't understand that they are going to have to make changes in their process, in their company, sometimes in their personnel to better align their company with the technology platform that they're using.”

That same focus on operational fit guided Aaron’s approach to building Terial. Rather than applying a generalized software model, he outlined a platform designed around the specific demands of commercial roofing, where field execution and office coordination must remain closely connected. Aaron explained, “Everything lives and dies in the field. So, our software will live or die with field adoption.” From inspections and estimating to production reporting and project closeout, the system is structured to manage the full life cycle of work, reinforcing continuity rather than fragmentation.

Equally important, the conversation demonstrates that implementation begins well before onboarding. Sutter Roofing’s transition involved early engagement from leadership across departments, deliberate identification of workflow gaps and the development of internal champions to guide adoption. Brad explained, “You have to be willing and understand that you're going to have to make changes at your company and some of the way you operate to better fit into the tech or to better implement and to fit onto the technology platform.” That level of preparation allowed the company to move from training to active use with clarity and momentum, reducing disruption while accelerating familiarity across the team.

The result is a broader takeaway for contractors evaluating new systems. Technology can enable growth, but only when paired with organizational readiness and shared accountability. For commercial roofing companies, the most effective outcomes come when software decisions are treated as long-term operational strategies, structured, collaborative and built to support how the business actually works.

AI agents reshape workflow efficiency in commercial roofing

A closer look at how automation tools are helping contractors scale operations without replacing the human element.

As labor constraints tighten and project demands grow more complex, commercial roofing contractors are under increasing pressure to operate with greater precision and efficiency. In response, technology providers are introducing tools designed not to disrupt the workforce, but to strengthen it. At the center of that shift is artificial intelligence, now being applied in ways that directly address the day-to-day realities of roofing operations.

This evolution is becoming more visible across the industry. During an interview at the International Roofing Expo (IRE) 2026, Aaron Weinstein, CEO and co-founder of Terial, described how AI-driven systems are being embedded into core workflows, from initial estimates to final invoicing. The intent, he explained, is not substitution, but support. “When it comes to AI, we think about this as complementing your team,” Aaron said. “So, not replacing any kind of people who are on your team, but really helping increase their existing capacity.”

From there, the conversation shifts to how that support is delivered in practice. Central to the model is the use of AI agents, systems built to carry out specific operational tasks with consistency and scale. Aaron framed these agents in familiar terms, positioning them as functional extensions of existing roles. He shared, “Think of it as a person or someone who's going to do a job.” By automating responsibilities such as dispatching, proposal generation and data entry, these tools allow teams to move faster while reducing the likelihood of missed details.

That capability addresses a long-standing challenge in roofing; the accumulation of small inefficiencies that compound over time. Missed line items, incomplete documentation and delays in coordination can all erode margins. By standardizing these processes, AI systems introduce a level of consistency that is difficult to achieve manually, particularly at scale.

Even so, adoption is unfolding with clear boundaries. Contractors continue to prioritize human oversight, recognizing that judgment, experience and accountability remain central to the work. AI may improve accuracy and speed, but it does not replace the need for verification in a field where errors carry real consequences.

That distinction is shaping how companies approach implementation. Rather than adopting technology in the abstract, many are turning to peer validation as a primary filter. As Aaron emphasized, real-world experience remains the most reliable indicator of value. Aaron urged, “Speak to the people who are using it today in the field.”

As the technology matures, its role is becoming more clearly defined. In commercial roofing, AI is not emerging as a replacement for skilled labor, but as a system for reinforcing it, extending capacity, tightening execution and allowing teams to focus on the work that requires human judgment most.

Understand how relationships, timing and trust often steer major technology decisions in commercial roofing just as much as product features do.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, R3NG owner Lauren Morley and Terial co-founder Aaron Weinstein discussed the human moments that influence technology decisions. Lauren shared that her path to Terial started years earlier through her involvement in the Greg Haynes peer-to-peer group, where contractors often exchange candid feedback about tools and processes. While her company was struggling through a difficult platform transition, another member mentioned Terial and Greg added that it was one of the few systems he believed could handle everything a commercial roofer needs. Lauren kept the name in the back of her mind for when she was ready to consider another change.

Months later, a chance meeting at a sales conference brought everything full circle. Lauren found herself discussing her biggest operational frustrations with an attendee who listened closely as she described the challenges of managing multiple systems. She didn’t realize she was speaking directly to the person behind the platform she had mentally bookmarked. When he eventually introduced himself as Aaron Weinstein of Terial, the connection between the earlier recommendation and this unexpected encounter became immediately clear. A brief conversation turned into a long discussion about company growth, industry hurdles and what it takes to build software that serves real roofing workflows. That initial rapport set the stage for a more formal evaluation of Terial’s platform.

Lauren said her team remained cautious because of past setbacks, noting, “I think we were all very hesitant. We were not very trusting at the time.” But Terial’s willingness to engage directly with everyone on staff changed the experience. She said the depth of Terial’s involvement quickly won her team over and made the decision straightforward. That hands-on approach helped her crew feel supported through every stage of onboarding rather than pushed into another difficult transition.

For Lauren, that mix of peer trust, timing and direct engagement ultimately reshaped how her company approached technology decisions. What began as a casual recommendation and an unexpected conversation turned into a process where her entire team felt seen and supported. Past platform challenges had made the group cautious, but the depth of involvement throughout onboarding gradually replaced hesitation with confidence. The experience represented how relationships, timing and thoughtful implementation can weigh just as heavily as product features when contractors choose the systems that will support their long-term growth.

Learn how a different approach to selection, buy-in and onboarding can protect profits and morale.

For commercial contractors like R3NG, the choice to overhaul core business software often follows years of frustration with tools that slow down field work or fail to give owners the information they need. In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Megan Ellsworth brought together two voices who see those challenges every day: Lauren Morley, owner of R3NG Roofing in Denver and Aaron Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Terial. Their shared perspective made clear why many commercial roofing firms are rethinking the systems they rely on to run sales, service and production.

Lauren outlined how familiar the pain points have become, saying her team often finds that some platforms don’t give owners enough control on the back end to run the business effectively. In her view, many tools are either too simplistic to be useful or so limited that they become unusable in day-to-day operations. She said many platforms still operate far from the realities of a jobsite. “I think that historically commercial platforms are over complicated. They take too many steps to do something or they expect a roofer to be able to complete a service ticket in whole while they're on top of the roof. They don't live in the reality of what it's like to actually do the work.”

The problem is compounded by tools built to handle only one part of the workflow. Lauren noted that some systems function as a customer relationship software (CRM), others as production or estimating platforms, but few offer the broader depth contractors actually need. She also pointed to increasing vendor consolidation, which can leave contractors uncertain about the future of the third-party tools they rely on when ownership changes and integrations suddenly shift.

From Terial’s vantage point, the issue runs deeper than complexity. Aaron said older systems forced contractors into rigid, one-path-only workflows. “There is one step-by-step process to do a workflow. And if you deviate one step, good luck.” He said Terial took the opposite approach, coming into the industry without assumptions. “We're building software to be the best piece of software you've ever used in the industry. We're going to provide the framework and the rails.”

That mindset is paired with a warning about failed transitions. “We recently onboarded a client, who literally could point to a $600,000 loss because of a transition that they made that was unsuccessful,” Aaron shared. For Lauren, that kind of risk is exactly why platform changes have to be shared decisions. “Picking a platform is a huge investment in time, in money, in morale,” she said, adding that involving her entire staff changed the outcome. “It's not my project anymore, it's everyone's project.”

What to expect from this year’s international roofing expo.

The International Roofing Expo (IRE) is the premier and largest expo dedicated to the roofing industry. Whether you’re a contractor or industry professional, IRE is the place to be! With countless education sessions, networking events and booths on the trade show floor, IRE offers unmatched opportunities.

This year’s show begins on January 20, and we are already counting down the days! If you’re attending, make sure to stop by our booth to say hello to the Coffee Shops crew (booth can be found in the trade show lobby) as well as our industry friends, like Terial (booth #1665), A.C.T. Metal Deck Supply (booth #2131), Equipter (booth #4231), All Weather Insulated Panels (booth #1601) and Latinos En Roofing (booth #5461). For those still deciding whether or not to get a ticket, we sat down for an episode of Roofing Road Trips® with Brandi McElhaney, IRE show manager, and Rich Russo, IRE director, to learn why this year’s expo is a must-attend for any roofing professional!

One of the biggest changes coming this year is the addition of a new exhibitor program! Brandi explained, “We’re very excited about our new program, IRE First Look. It's a specialized exhibitor participation program for those new to the market. So, it helps businesses new to the roofing sector, showcase their solutions through efficient, cost-effective exhibits that, while smaller than traditional booths, create a great way to get your foot in the door.”

Additionally, this year’s show will feature an expansion of the exteriors offerings. Brandi shared, “We've doubled the size of our exteriors pavilion, which is dedicated to the exterior product categories and home improvement, windows, solar doors and siding. for 2026. We’re also partnering with SRS on a pro contractor pavilion education area that will showcase exterior products.” This dedication to building out the show’s exterior products sector comes as a response to past contractor feedback. Rick explained, “This is something that came out of one of our focus groups a couple of years ago when we asked the industry, ‘What are you looking for?’ We had some contractors come up to us and say, ‘Hey, we want to expand our roofing business, but we’re not sure how.’ So, we created the pro contractors pavilion as a space for those roofing contractors that want to expand their businesses to learn how to expand their businesses into new categories.”

And last but not least, the IRE team has worked to make their offerings even more accessible with Spanish language support! Not only do they have their Spanish education track, but they have incorporated a tool that can translate non-Spanish offerings for Spanish-speaking professionals. Brandi explained, “We’re using Wordly. It’s a program that you basically just scan a QR code when you walk into the room and the program translates English to Spanish or vice versa. We want everyone to get the most out of the show, and this is part of making that possible.”

Commercial roofing contractors are pushing hard for technology that actually fits how they sell, service and manage roofs instead of juggling a dozen disconnected tools.

Terial is positioning itself as a one-stop technology partner for commercial roofing contractors who are tired of managing sprawling software stacks that do not talk to each other. Host Megan Ellsworth opened this Roofing Road Trips® episode by welcoming Aaron Weinstein, co-founder and CEO of Terial, who set the stage for the company’s role in addressing those challenges across the industry.

Those challenges are not theoretical. They are daily realities for contractors in the field, including Denver-based RNG Roofing, a commercial contractor focused on large multifamily and low-slope private asset management projects. During the conversation, owner Lauren Morley described how managing multiple platforms became a constant obstacle. “We focus on large commercial roofs, both multifamily and low slope private asset management and we have a pretty robust service to perfect.”

Lauren explained that keeping work moving often meant relying on too many disconnected tools. “Right now or at least before today, we were using something for time clocks, something for proposals, something for estimating, something for photos. you know, 17 different outfits for one thing.” While the number of available software platforms has grown, she said usability has not always kept pace. “I think probably the other thing I've noticed is a lot of growth in all the different platforms and different ones coming out. I've always joked that I've always felt like there's kind of programs that speak Japanese and programs that speak Latin, but none that really spoke English.”

Those contractor pain points set the stage for why unified platforms are gaining attention across commercial roofing. Rather than adding another point solution to the stack, many contractors are now looking for systems that bring workflows together and reflect how roofing businesses actually operate in the field and the office.

That is the gap Terial set out to address. Aaron, who outlined the company’s approach to commercial roofing technology. “We are a one-stop shop for commercial roofing contractors when it comes to technology. So, think of us helping support everything from managing your sales and estimating process through closing an invoice and finishing a re-roof project.”

Aaron said Terial entered the roofing industry a little more than two years ago after recognizing how fragmented contractor software environments had become. “We identified that gap or that issue, that problem that Lauren just stated, which was you should not need eight, 10, 11 pieces of software to run your commercial roofing business. You just shouldn't. And the worst part about that is that none of those pieces of software would speak to each other.”

The company’s answer has been to build an integrated platform designed to support both field crews and office teams without forcing contractors into rigid workflows. Aaron noted, “So I think when we came in, we said, how do we build the easiest piece of software or platform to operate both in the field and in the office, but then how do we also kind of combine those distinct point solutions?”

For contractors like RNG Roofing, the shift toward unified software is about more than convenience. It is increasingly tied to efficiency, profitability and responsiveness to building owners. As tech stacks grow more complex, platforms that simplify workflows for both the office and the field are beginning to stand out. By targeting the “17 different outfits for one thing” problem and focusing on tools that speak the language of roofing, Terial aims to give commercial roofers a clearer path from lead to invoice on every project.

By working with Terial, this roofing company was able to scale their business processes and centralize their visibility for maximum growth.

Meet Damschroder Roofing, a family-owned commercial roofing company. Originally founded in 1976, Damschroder has since built a stellar reputation within their Fremont, Ohio community. As they’ve built that reputation, their company has grown to exceed ~$30M in total revenue and around 70 team members. To help navigate this growth, the Damschroder leadership team looked to Terial to help them integrate operational tools that will streamline their daily processes and efficiency as they continue to scale their business.

Before working with Terial, Damschroder relied on a patchwork of disconnected systems that led to inefficiencies across departments, especially in sales and operations. Ian Rammel, the sales manager for Damschroder, explained, “Prior to Terial, two departments could be doing the same thing for the same customer. And no one knew.”

These efficiency and accountability challenges could be traced back to three underlying issues:

No source of truth: The sales team tracked projects in an incumbent system, scheduling documents lived in custom Gantt charts and materials were manually tracked - making oversight time consuming.

Cross-department misalignment: Without shared visibility, the sales and service teams frequently overlapped.

Manual, error-prone workflows: CRM notes were logged by hand – if at all – slowing teams down and leading to lost information.

Luckily, Ian heard about Terial through a peer group. He immediately recognized the platform’s potential to transform their workflows. Fast forward a few weeks and Terial was on-site leading training sessions and implementation. He shared, “Terial came out and worked with every individual, even our techs. Then we made weekly calls. The customer service has been top-notch.”

Today, Damschroder now uses the full Terial suite across sales, service and production:

CRM to manage every stage of the sales funnel

Service tickets and calendar to streamline scheduling and dispatch

Daily reports for job site visibility and real-time updates

Change orders and Gantt charts to manage project timelines and scope

Already ahead of expectations with contracted jobs this year, Damschroder is on pace for its strongest year yet. As the company enters its 50th year, Terial has become a critical part of how they operate and grow moving forward. Managers now have real-time visibility into rep activity and the deal progress, making it easier to identify bottlenecks and emphasize accountability. Lead generators tap into historical service data to prioritize prospects, while daily reports surface job site issues early – often before the customer is even aware.

When asked about the impact of incorporating Terial’s workflows and advice, Ian had nothing but good to say. He explained, “We used to close 80–85 jobs a year. We’re already at 50 and we’re not even halfway through the year. Further, the daily reports give us instant updates. If there's an issue on a job, I know before the customer does.”

In addition to these operational improvements, Terial has created a clear path for growth in sales performance. Ian shared, “Our lead gen team can look at service history and say, 'We’ve been out here 8 times this year, should we talk about a new roof?' That’s powerful. We’re at $9.5 million in contracted work and expect to hit $17M soon. Terial’s helping us get ahead of our revenue targets.”

Ian summed up the impact of Terial. He shared, “Terial has helped us move the needle toward our goals. The entire team relies on it, personally I always have two tabs open. Terial and my email. That’s how I run my day.”

Terial isn’t just another roofing software company – it's the foundation for building a stronger business.

When you ask Terial Cofounder and CEO Aaron Weinstein what the brand name means, his answer reveals the company’s entire mission. “It comes from ‘material,’” he shared. “Just as materials are the foundation of every roofing project, we want Terial to be a foundational building block for your business.” In a recent interview with Aaron, it became clear that this idea – of building something that strengthens the whole – runs through everything about Terial: its origins, its design and its impact on the roofing industry.

The foundation

Before starting Terial, Aaron built his career in finance and technology, but his roots were in the trades. Growing up outside of Boston, he recalled, “I grew up with a deep appreciation for the trades and the impact that construction can have on a family and a community. I wanted to have an impact on people – to make their day-to-day lives easier.”

This desire to help people led him back to roofing after years in high-performance finance and technology environments. “We saw an opportunity to bring the best of what we’d learned from technology into the trades,” he explained. “Roofing is ready for innovation. It’s an industry that’s excited about investment in tools that really work.”

The framework

Terial is an end-to-end platform designed to help roofing companies manage every part of their business without the complexity of juggling multiple systems. “Unlike other technologies that focus on one sliver of a company, whether that’s estimating or time tracking, Terial is the first platform to connect the entire business,” Aaron emphasized.

Terial’s unified structure includes three fully integrated modules:

CRM module: Manages customer relationships, bids and estimating pipelines.

Service module: Dispatches and tracks high-volume service and maintenance jobs, giving field crews an easy way to log time, photos and materials.

Production module: Monitors budgets, purchase orders and job costing from estimate through completion.

Because it’s all in one place, contractors gain visibility across their entire operation, often for the first time. Aaron shared, “Instead of realizing at year-end that profits weren’t what they expected, they can make real-time adjustments throughout the year.”

Most importantly, Terial was designed with the field in mind. The software isn’t there to slow crews down; it’s there to help them get the job done safely, efficiently and accurately. “When done right,” Aaron added, “technology is the biggest accelerant a business can have.”

The finish

Beyond representing the physical materials of a building, the name Terial also speaks to material progress – the measurable impact the company wants contractors to see.

“We want to help our customers move from a 5% profit margin business to a 15% profit margin business,” Aaron shared. “It’s about efficiency, visibility and empowering people to do their best work.”

For Aaron and his team, progress is really about the people: “We’re helping roofers get their work done as safely and quickly as possible so they can get home to their families. That’s what matters most.” Just as the right materials make the difference for a lasting roof, the right software can transform the success of a roofing business.
