Improper repairs can cause lasting damage to a metal roof, making it critical to work with a contractor who specializes in metal roofing.

Metal roofs are designed to provide long service lives with relatively little maintenance, but even these high-performance systems can eventually develop leaks. Roof Hugger notes that when a leak occurs, the repair itself can determine whether the roof continues performing for years or suffers additional damage.

Many metal roofs are replaced before reaching the end of their useful lives because previous repairs were performed incorrectly. Tar, caulk and conventional roof coatings may be rolled, sprayed or smeared over panels as a quick fix, but these approaches can trap moisture, contribute to corrosion and potentially void manufacturer finish warranties that may extend from 20 to 40 years.

The first step is identifying the problem. Note where water appears inside the building, how far the location is from the eave or ridge and the direction the water is traveling. It is also important to determine whether the building has a screw-down (through-fastened), roof or a standing seam system. Screw-down roofs contain thousands of fasteners that can become potential leak points as they age, while standing seam roofs have fewer exposed fasteners but may experience leaks at end laps.

Once the likely source has been identified, contact a metal roofing specialist rather than a general roofing contractor. Building owners can look for the manufacturer’s nameplate for referral information or consult organizations such as the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA).

Repairs should address the underlying failure rather than cover it. Failed fasteners, for example, can be replaced with appropriately sized, long-life zinc or stainless-steel fasteners instead of being coated with sealant. Because metal roofing expands and contracts with temperature changes, penetrations, accessories and roof-mounted equipment also require products and installation methods designed specifically for metal systems.

A properly repaired metal roof should never look like it has the Chicken Pox or striped like a zebra when the contractor leaves your building. Don't pay them if it does; that is not a proper repair.

When a roof truly reaches the end of its service life, a properly engineered retrofit metal roof system can provide a path forward providing a 50 year plus, photovoltaic ready roof that can meet or exceed current code requirements.

Modern daylighting systems are giving metal building professionals new ways to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, safety and overall building performance.

Daylighting may be one of the oldest concepts in building design, but advancements in material design, performance capabilities and installation methods are giving it new relevance in modern metal buildings. During a MetalTalk™ at the Metal Building Contractors and Erector Association (MBCEA) event, Karen Edwards spoke with Brian Grohe, director of commercial sales for North America at VELUX, about how daylighting is evolving across new construction and renovation projects.

That evolution also aligns with VELUX Commercial’s new “We’re built for big” initiative as the company works with design firms, building owners and contractors on commercial daylighting projects. Applications can range from warehouses and schools to hospitals, retail spaces and other commercial facilities, with each project shaped by its intended use and performance goals.

“We really try and tailor the daylighting strategy to the use of the building,” Brian shared. Those strategies may focus on energy efficiency, natural illumination or creating a stronger visual connection to the outdoors depending on customer needs.

Existing buildings represent another opportunity as facilities are repurposed and upgraded. VELUX works with project teams to determine where skylights should be located, how many are needed and how they can be integrated with existing roofing systems. “We really try and get in early to understand the outcome that owners and architects are looking for and then we tailor our strategies to maximize that impact for them,” Brian explained.

For metal buildings, integration with the roof system is particularly important. Modern curb systems can be designed to match specific roof panel profiles, helping contractors create watertight installations while limiting disruption to the roof. The VELUX Commercial Dynamic Dome also uses its shape to capture reflected and lower-angle sunlight, while an inner prismatic glazing layer diffuses light throughout the space and reduces glare.

Safety and durability remain central considerations. “We test the skylights to failure with impact and static loads, and we provide that information to the contractors and building owners so that they know these skylights are strong. They're meant to last,” Brian said. VELUX Commercial also recommends accessory fall protection as an additional safety measure.

For contractors, understanding modern daylighting systems can expand the solutions they offer while supporting installation, retrofit and replacement opportunities in new and existing metal buildings.

The right support protects your employees and strengthens your business.

We can talk all we want about separating work from personal life, but the reality is that we carry both with us. Things like family concerns, financial pressure and grief follow us to the job site or the office and burnout and stress come home with us at the end of the day.

Too often, people try to ignore the way our private and professional worlds interact, to the detriment of their mental health. This is especially prevalent in construction, where suicide rates and mental health risk in construction are higher than the national average. And even when tragic loss of life is avoided, the impact of ignoring stressors of your team, whether they stem from work or home, can also lead to issues like missed days, safety concerns and turnover you can’t afford in our current labor market.

To help businesses provide the support for mental health that is needed to keep their teams safe and succeeding, the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA) has teamed up with ABC Insurance Trust to offer an Employee Assistance Program, powered by TELUS Health, focused on supporting the mental wellbeing of your employees.

This program includes:

A special discounted rate for MBCEA members of $3.05 per employee per month, compared with the standard rate of $3.50 (available through 12/31/26)

Leader training on recognizing and responding to mental health concerns, navigating crises and supporting employees

A standalone EAP that is not tied to your medical plan or carrier

Coverage for every employee, even those who are not enrolled in your health plan

24/7 crisis intervention, with live calls answered by a master’s-level clinician

Mental health support, substance use counseling, financial counseling and work-life services, including career, child and elder support

Want to learn more about this program? MBCEA will be hosting a webinar on Thursday, October 22 at 12:00 p.m. ET featuring Katie Lacroix. Katie is the director of strategic alliances at TELUS Health and will be explaining the program, what it offers and how to get started!

Funding quality craftsmanship and building the future workforce.

One of the biggest challenges facing the construction industry today is finding and developing skilled workers. For metal building contractors, investing in training is essential not only for workforce development but also for maintaining quality standards and meeting accreditation requirements. A new funding opportunity from the Ketenbrink Education Foundation (KEF) is making that investment easier by helping companies offset the cost of training their teams.

The foundation is currently offering immediate mini grants for companies that enroll employees in the Metal Building Institute (MBI) Quality and Craftsmanship (Q&C) 101 training series. According to information shared by Jacqueline Meiluta, companies can receive $250 in grant funding for each employee who successfully completes and passes the testing portion of the training program, with grants available for up to five employees per company.

The financial benefit is significant. While the Q&C 101 testing costs $110 per participant, contractors can receive $250 per employee through the grant program, creating a positive return on their training investment while strengthening workforce capabilities.

The opportunity comes at a critical time as the industry continues to focus on workforce development, safety and installation quality. The Q&C training program is designed to help workers better understand metal building construction standards and best practices. In fact, completion of MBI Quality and Craftsmanship training is a required component of AC478 accreditation, making the program especially valuable for contractors pursuing or maintaining accreditation status.

The grant funding is being provided through the Ketenbrink Education Foundation, whose mission is to help metal building construction workers and aspiring industry professionals acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the field. The foundation also works to improve the availability of technical and practical training throughout the metal building industry.

As noted in the foundation's materials, industry leader Bob Ketenbrink emphasized the importance of proper training, stating that one of the most important needs in the metal construction industry is ensuring workers are trained to safely and correctly install materials so building owners receive the highest quality results from their investment.

To encourage participation, KEF has allocated $50,000 to the program, enough to support approximately 200 newly trained craftsmen across the industry. The grants are available on a first-come, first-served basis and will close once funding has been exhausted. Each company is eligible for up to $1,250 in total grant funding.

Programs like this demonstrate how industry associations and foundations continue to invest in the future of construction. By helping contractors reduce training costs while improving workforce competency, the KEF grant program creates a win-win opportunity for employers, employees and the customers who depend on quality construction.

Contractors interested in taking advantage of the funding should act quickly while grants remain available. Applications can be submitted through the foundation's online application process.

Learn more about the grant opportunity and apply today through the KEF application portal. Investing in training today can help strengthen your workforce, support accreditation goals and position your company for long-term success.

In an industry built on relationships, the strength of an organization often comes down to the people behind it.

At the Metal Building Contractors and Erectors Association (MBCEA), there is a focus on connection that shows up in how the team operates day to day. Leading the organization is Sasha Demyan, who has served as executive director for more than a decade. Her tenure reflects not just consistency, but growth, helping guide MBCEA through evolving industry needs while expanding its programs and partnerships. Recognition in the Metal Construction News Hall of Fame highlights the impact of that leadership, but just as important is the accessibility she brings to the role.

Another key member of the organization is Britain Graver. Britain is the member services and administrative coordinator, meaning their work focuses on keeping the member experience running smoothly, from managing the website to supporting registrations and day-to-day communication. Alongside Britain, is Ginger Roberti, a newer MBCEA team member who is their administrative assistant. In this role, Ginger serves as a first point of contact for many members, helping ensure questions are answered quickly and the right resources are easy to find.

Britain and Ginger's roles are a great example of how much behind-the-scenes work goes intobuilding a seamless, responsive and valuable membership for people at all levels of the association. And for the industry professionals that interact with the MBCEA, it is people like Sasha, Britain and Ginger, the humans behind the MBCEA, that make a meaningful difference in how members experience the organization.

It is a prime example of how an association's values extend far beyond its events or program and into the people who make those experiences approachable and worthwhile. When members know who they are talking to and feel supported in those interactions, it turns routine touchpoints into real relationships.
