style=' '  loading='lazy' />

The expanded thickness range addresses increasing market demand for heavier-gauge, prefinished metal materials that combine durability and aesthetic versatility.

ATAS International, a leading manufacturer of premier metal roofing, wall panels, ceilings and accessories, announces the expansion of its offering of prepainted aluminum flat sheets and coils to include thicknesses up to .118 inches. This strategic enhancement provides architects, fabricators and contractors with greater design flexibility and structural performance for demanding applications.

The expanded thickness range addresses increasing market demand for heavier-gauge, prefinished metal materials that combine durability and aesthetic versatility. By offering prepainted flat sheet and coil in gauges up to .118-inch thickness, ATAS enables customers to achieve enhanced impact resistance, improved load capacity and long-term performance, while maintaining the benefits of factory-applied finishes. These finishes result in consistent, high-quality coatings, which ensure color retention, durability and corrosion resistance.

“Design professionals are pushing the boundaries of what metal can do in the building envelope,” said Jim Bush, vice president of sales and marketing with ATAS. “By expanding our prepainted aluminum flat sheet and coil offering to thicker gauges, we are providing the market with high-performance material options that meet structural demands without sacrificing finish quality or visual appeal.”

The expanded product line includes a total of eight aluminum thicknesses, starting at .032 all the way up to .118. The addition of .080, .090, .100 and .118-inch thick prepainted aluminum supports the growing use of metal in high-performance building envelopes, where strength, longevity and sustainability are critical. Thicker prepainted material options also allow for greater customization in formed profiles, brake shapes and specialty architectural components.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

The project’s balance of the traditional and custom elements results in a modern, forward-thinking renovation.

Witherspoon Student Center at North Carolina State University (NC State) in Raleigh, North Carolina is a multi-faceted facility on campus; bridging legacy and functionality to meet the needs of a bustling campus. The building’s namesake is Augustus M. Witherspoon, forever immortalized at NC State for his extraordinary contributions to the community. Witherspoon is venerated for his academic accomplishments as the second African American to earn a PhD from NC State, eventually becoming the first African American professor to teach at the college. His scholarly career led him to becoming a staple of the community as a recognized researcher and as a beloved professor. Echoing his importance to the community and honoring his memory, Witherspoon Student Center houses several campus amenities: NC State’s African American Cultural Center, Military and Veteran Services, Student Media, Passport Office and campus cinema. Originally completed in 1990, interior elements of the facility were recently renovated with ATAS’ custom beam and baffle panels to modernize the building.

Featured on ceilings in Witherspoon are tapered ATAS Lineair Plank panels in .032 aluminum in a custom woodgrain color. The panels are nestled in white perimeter ceiling bays, four bays in total, which enact a soffit-like appearance and creates unique effects.

The woodgrain adds hints of warmth to the coolness of the space, contrasting the stark white edge and the dark ceiling, generating aesthetically pleasing optical illusions. The design of the panels is dynamic, producing two distinct visuals depending on your vantage point. Approaching the room from afar, the hovering panels have a woven effect like that of a basket weave. The all-black suspension system and black ceiling work together behind the ceiling panels to make an ideal background for illusory effects. The panels appear to float, hovering freely on the ceiling as the crisp edges of the panels stand out. The suspended panel edges reflect light and highlight the distinct lines with the panel tapering creating a zigzag, lattice effect. The diversity in design also required a few functional adjustments, ATAS happily meeting the project’s needs for accessibility and accommodation.

“It was a super cool job,” recalled Kevin Cox, director of interior business development for ATAS. “We can make all the standard ceiling panel profiles and a lot of custom ones. We don’t shy away from those. We’re a little more innovative in our approach to it, but we can meet design needs where other manufacturers don’t because we’ve been working with metal for over half a century,” said Cox.

The project required quick thinking to make sure there could be access to the ceiling and to accommodate technology, like speakers. An innovative solution was to modify a clip used in standard application to be applied in a flexible fashion to meet the project’s needs. The standard clip is designed to be mechanically fastened to a grid but to achieve this project’s required elements, the clip was adapted in this project’s application to rely on folded tabs and the T-bar suspension to create the desired aesthetic effect and be functional. Because of the adapted application feature, the panels are given a range of flexibility in that they can move, be opened, closed and adjusted freely. A second functional element of the project that needed to be accounted for was space for speakers. Quickly pivoting with mathematics, the panel lengths were adjusted to accommodate the desire to adhere speakers to the ceiling on the same plane as the panels. The speakers seamlessly integrate with the black T-bar system and ceiling, fitting in between the ceiling panels to maintain its visual appeal while remaining flexible to the needs of the space. The ability to meet design requirements while not sacrificing aesthetics is a key element of ATAS metal panels.

“We excel in making people’s visions a reality. Our tenure, our ability, allows us to take something from conception to completion. ATAS metal ceiling panels are manufactured to last, prioritizing longevity and high-quality materials,” Cox explained.

Lineair Plank is available in over 40 stock, 70% PVDF colors with woodgrain and stucco embossing options available. The panels are available in .032, .040, .050 and .063 aluminum. As an interior product, Lineair Plank can have sound absorption material adhered inside the panel and be microperforated for acoustic performance. The panels require minimal maintenance and while projects like Witherspoon boast the look of woodgrain, the panels, unlike traditional wood beams, are fire resistant and not susceptible to warp, crack or rot. The practical benefits and the range of design options make it an ideal product to add sophistication to any space.

The project’s balance of the traditional and custom elements results in a modern, forward-thinking renovation. The design is an eye-catching accent to the room, providing different pleasing effects wherever it catches your eye. Such dynamisms are a testament to the flexibility ATAS interior panels offer to achieve any vision, from conception to completion. The final design landed Witherspoon Student Center the First-Place award in the Interiors category of ATAS’ 2024 Project of the Year Awards. The architect of the project was CRA Associates, Inc. The general contractors who installed the panels were Salisbury and Moore, and the panels were distributed by Colonial Materials, Inc.

Bringing designs together like Witherspoon is part of the joy of what makes ATAS special. “We lean into our custom capabilities and into the design community’s and customer’s needs, wants and desires. The best part of these projects is to take something that is unique and hasn’t been done before and make it possible!” Cox shared.

Cornell University is a place that fosters the minds of upcoming generations — the next creative, bold and visionary minds of tomorrow. Catherine Commons stands as a project that actualizes these attributes, using a variety of sustainable and environmentally conscious metal wall and roof panels in bright imaginative colors to shelter students and be a place where they can succeed. The project consists of several multi-story buildings cladded in four ATAS products and in four unique colors, creating an exciting communal atmosphere that brings students together in places where they and their studies will thrive.

The plan of Catherine Commons wasn’t just to build more housing; it was to reimagine a city block into its own ecosystem that happens to be conveniently located near Cornell. It boasts a community focus, concerned not only with what structures it erected but also the space it deliberately left open to establish outdoor communal spaces. The residential complex’s website lists the modern amenities Catherine Commons offers. These include an exclusive, state-of-the-art fitness center, study lounges that exude comfort to optimize study quality and efficiency and an on-site café to keep everything residents may need in one place.

The project’s architectural design and building shapes were carefully curated, cognizant of the existing neighborhood’s shape. The architects of the project, ikon.5 architects, meticulously considered how to develop Catherine Commons as part of a larger picture saying of one building, Building 4, “Residential in form and scale, it is set back from the street to align with neighboring houses. Its pitched roof, projected front porch, metal shingles and residentially scaled windows and dormers complement the Collegetown vernacular.”

Featured across the Catherine Commons buildings are ATAS’ Versa-Line panel in .032 aluminum which is installed vertically throughout this project with distinct seams from varied width sizes to elevate the building façades. Versa-Line can be installed horizontally or vertically, with or without striations, and is available in two standard panel widths, 12-3/8” and 16-3/8”, with custom width capabilities to meet design needs. The application of the Versa-Line panel in this project is dynamic, including rectangular sections of panel being split by floor to ceiling windows while other walls of the buildings are made entirely of the metal panel with slots of different panel colors breaking up monotony and providing contrast from other elements like colored brick, keeping the design interesting. Versa-Line is featured in several colors; Charcoal Grey, Hemlock Green, Patina Green and Gold, across the buildings with other ATAS products, to tell a cohesive color story and connect the separate buildings together into a community through architectural design.

One of the Catherine Commons buildings, Building 4, is clad in and has on its roof ATAS’ CastleTop® panel in .032 aluminum in the shade of Hemlock Green. CastleTop® is a flat diamond-shaped shingle that can be used in wall and roof applications, offering easy installations with its concealed fasteners. CastleTop® panel is a popular design choice because of its design flexibility, availability of different colors from over 40+ choices and custom color capabilities and the ability to be combined to create interesting patterns. The panel makes just as bold of a statement chosen in a singular shade, as it is used in Catherine Commons to create a striking look. The Hemlock Green CastleTop®’s richness contrasts against the Versa-Line panels on adjacent walls, making the building lush with textures and visual appeal. The color and panel choices feel deliberate — simultaneously constructing buildings that stand out along a Collegetown street and are inspired by the surrounding trees that change with the swings of upstate New York seasons, from the pale greens that resemble ATAS Patina Green, to the earthy hue of ATAS Hemlock Green on sturdy trees and the turning oranges and reds of leaves with ATAS’ Gold color.

The visual longevity of a design is as important as the sustainability of its materials. All the ATAS products featured on the Catherine Commons’ project are sustainable with the longevity of aluminum panels with recycled content, while being entirely recyclable after their long service life. The result is a visually striking and ambitious project aware of its surrounding nature as it is of its neighborhood community, meeting the needs of its citizens while accentuating the landscape.

Since acquiring the assets of Metal Sales & Service, Inc., including the Metalwërks® line of architectural metal plate systems, earlier this year, ATAS International has developed an educational course focused on that type of cladding system. “Architectural Metal Plate Systems: Durable Design for Today’s Buildings” has been approved by the AIA (American Institute of Architects) for one LU/HSW (Learning Unit/Health, Safety and Welfare).

The learning objectives of this course are as follows:

Recognize what defines a metal plate system and how it differs from other metal wall assemblies.

Identify materials and finish options for architectural metal plate and learn about applications and installation techniques.

Explore the performance attributes and design advantages of plate systems.

Discover how metal plate contributes to sustainable and resilient building envelopes.

ATAS now offers a total of 13 courses that are all approved by the AIA for one LU/HSW. Ten of those courses are approved by IIBEC (International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants) for one continuing education hour. Four courses focused on sustainable products, resulting in more energy efficient buildings, are approved by GBCI (Green Business Certification, Inc.) for one continuing education hour. For metal ceilings and other metal interior products, two courses are approved by IDCEC (International Design Continuing Education Council) for one continuing education unit for interior designers. Several of our courses (recorded webinars) are offered online.

All of the course offerings, with their learning objectives, can be found on the ATAS Academy web page at https://atas.com/aiaandgbciapprovedseminars. On October 10, 2025, four teams in the Canstruction Greater Lehigh Valley competition built sculptures around this year’s video games theme. A total of 20,197 cans were used to create the sculptures, and all were donated to the local Second Harvest Food Bank in the Lehigh Valley when they were dissembled two weeks later.

ATAS International’s Monsters of Metal team, led by co-captains Kevin Klersy and Patrick Reinhart, won three of the six awards this year. This is the sixth year that ATAS participated in this competition and is one of the original teams that has competed from the beginning. The Monsters of Metal chose Sonic as their subject matter for this year. The speedy blue hero was featured on the front of the display, and on the backside, evil Dr. Eggman was depicted. The ATAS sculpture consisted of 3,000 cans, including black, green, garbanzo and cannellini beans, yams, Manwich, blueberries, tomato sauce, pork and beans and unsweetened coconut.
