Lloyd Anderson shares key moments from his career and advice for young professionals who are just beginning.

Having been in the roofing industry off and on since he was a teenager, Lloyd Anderson, the owner of Armadas Exteriors and vice president of the Associated Roofing Contractors of Oregon and Southwest Washing (ARC), has seen a lot during his career. We had the chance to talk to him about key formative moments he’s experienced over the years in an episode of Stories From the Roof.

One such moment that Lloyd mentioned was his decision to return to roofing. He explained, “I did some roofing when I was young, but then I went into optical before I went back to roofing. And I really took my time before I made that return...Looking back, part of me wishes I had gotten back sooner. But the other knows that if I had plunged early on, I'd have probably done it in a naive way because I was still learning to set aside my ego.”

A fond memory Lloyd mentioned was his first time attending the Western States trade show, which was an impactful experience for him as a roofing professional. He shared:

I went to the Western States show on a whim, I wasn't a member or anything, I'd seen an ad. And I was walking through the show and ended up at the Western States booth and Stan, who is now our president-elect, stopped me and asked me what I was doing. He just engaged with me and we had a conversation. He was just a board member at the time, and I was just enamored by the fact that in the roofing industry there are organizations like this that really elevate the contractor and help take them to the next level.

And today, in a full circle moment, Lloyd is now a board member with Western States, getting to be on the other side of the table bringing people into the fold like Stan once did for him. Overall, he is a huge proponent of associations as he sees them as a “great way to elevate not only yourself, but also the industry around you.”

Lloyd’s advice to young professionals is simple, “Stay with it. Roofing is a great industry and trade associations are a great resource for networking, education and job hunting.”

For almost 70 years, ARC has been a place for roofing contractors to gather and share important industry information.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Alex Tolle sat down with Mark Madeira, president of the Associated Roofing Contractors of Oregon and Southwest Washington (ARC), and Torrey Yungeberg, secretary of ARC, about the organization’s origins and ongoing mission.

Founded in 1957, ARC was a place where union commercial contractors could get together and talk about different topics in the roofing industry. “It was just a place for them to get together and converse about union items, negotiations, etc.” Mark said. Since then, it has expanded to include residential contractors, too. He shared, “We’ve got manufacturers involved, we've got suppliers involved. It's a really good spot to network and share information.”

Today, with 85 affiliated companies, membership to ARC is valued by contractors, suppliers and manufacturers throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington. One of the biggest values ARC provides is the opportunity for networking. “I've gotten so much value out of having close contacts with other local roofing companies who are dealing with the same things that my company is dealing with,” Torrey shared. “I love having a lot of close friends that I can ask for advice from, going to the meetings every month and discussing things that are happening.”

Along with networking, ARC monthly meetings include opportunities for education through various types of speakers so members can stay informed of the latest industry topics.

“I can remember one gentleman was discussing leaks: how to find leaks, mistakes others have made and some tips,” Mark noted. “We've had OSHA come in and talk. We try and get Oregon legislature to come in and talk about the business climate and things of that nature.”

            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

The ARC Christmas Dinner and Auction stand as a reminder that impact can extend far beyond a single night, reaching veterans who rely on organizations like Fort Kennedy for hope, support and a path forward.

The annual Associated Roofing Contractors of Oregon and Southwest Washington (ARC) Christmas Dinner and Auction once again delivered an evening that blended community with meaningful impact, bringing together industry partners for a night of networking and giving back. Guests mingled over cocktails while bidding on silent auction items, then gathered for dinner and presentations before turning their attention to the live auction, which sparked enthusiastic participation. Together, these moments reflected the spirit of the event: a shared commitment to making a tangible difference while strengthening relationships within the community.

At the heart of the evening was support for Fort Kennedy, a nonprofit dedicated to serving homeless and at-risk veterans. Over the past three years, the ARC Christmas Dinner and Auction has raised more than $90,000 for Fort Kennedy, providing critical funding for programs that support veterans as they work toward stability and independence. In addition to financial contributions, ARC attendees donated more than 30 coats and pairs of gloves to veterans in need this year thanks to the hands-on commitment behind the fundraising efforts. Tina Kennedy, Fort Kennedy’s executive director, shared the organization’s mission and reach, noting that they’ve helped more than 10,000 veterans over the last decade.

Among those in attendance was Alex Tolle, marketing manager of The Coffee Shops™ and a member of ARC. Reflecting on the evening, Alex shared how meaningful the experience was: “This event is always so inspiring,” she said. “Seeing the industry come together to support nonprofits like Fort Kennedy really matters. The work they do for veterans is critical and being able to play even a small role in helping them continue that work is incredibly important.”

The gathering of ARC members and industry leaders is a testament to the collective commitment behind the fundraiser, highlighting how shared values and local action can create a lasting impact for organizations like Fort Kennedy and the veterans they serve.

Roofing associations nationwide are sharing their time and resources to support their communities and the future of the industry.

Whether you are shopping for gifts, trying to get together with family or just wrapping up loose ends from 2025, the winter holiday season is a busy time. But we wanted to take a moment to pause and highlight how some people are giving back during this busy time. In no particular order, here are six stories of industry associations coming together this December to build up their communities by giving back.

1 – Arizona Roofing Contractor Association (ARCA)

The ARCA closed out their year of giving with their annual holiday party on December 10, 2025. The party, which was hosted at Fate Brewery from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., was in support of their Roofers Giving Back initiatives. These initiatives benefit:

Home of Hope: The ARCA Young Professionals group is gathering unwrapped gifts or monetary donations to purchase gifts this December for children at Home of Hope!

Youth On Their Own: The Tucson Bowling Committee is spending the month collecting non-perishable food items for the Youth On Their Own organization.

AZ Cancer Foundation: And Arizona Women in Roofing is collecting donations to support their efforts to purchase toys for the children at the AZ Cancer Foundation.

If you want to donate to any of these causes, visit azroofing.org. For more information, call 602-335-0133.

2 – Metal Roofing Contractors Association (MRCA)

Interested in advancing education, research and the future of the roofing industry? Consider supporting the MRCA Foundation! This foundation was created to raise awareness and improve the roofing industry by “supporting educational programming, industry research and industry-related academic scholarships.”

Learn more about the foundation and donate to support their work!

3 – The Associated Roofing Contractors of Oregon and SW Washington (ARC)

This was the third year that the ARC gathered for a Christmas Dinner and Auction! Hosted on December 6 at the Sheraton Portland Airport Hotel, this night was not only a fun gathering but a fundraiser for Fort Kennedy.

Fort Kennedy is a nonprofit that provides food, clothing and other essential resources to homeless and low-income veterans in Oregon and Washington. Their mission is simple, “To enable all veterans to move forward in their lives after military service [by providing] transitional housing and shelter, ensure access to employment, family counseling and benefits.”

Learn more about ARCOSWW and about Fort Kennedy.

4 – Utah Roofing Contractors Association (URCA)

A few states over, URCA also hosted a holiday party on December 5. Held at the PierPont Place, it was a casino royale themed party complete with blackjack, delicious food and a dazzling raffle. And like the other associations we’ve been highlighting, it was all for a good cause! URCA’s 2025 holiday party supported JustaBreak.org, a Utah-based nonprofit that gives cancer patients and caregivers joyful getaways to help bring them joy during their treatments.

Learn more about URCA and learn more about JustaBreak.org.

5 – International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC)

For 2025 Giving Tuesday (the Tuesday following Thanksgiving), IIBEC set out to raise money for their foundations, RCI-IIBEC Foundation (US) and RCI Foundation Canada (Canada). These foundations aim to better the industry and help move towards safer, more secure building enclosures in many different ways, including:

Industry-leading research: Support for these foundations supports research efforts that move the industry forward.

Funding publications: These foundations manage the publication of many key publications, like the 5th edition of Wind Uplift Pressures on Low-Slope Roofs.

Collaborative work: Because of the support they get, these foundations can collaborate with other organizations, like the Charles Pankow Foundation, to combine efforts for improving the state of the industry.

If you’re interested in supporting IIBEC’s foundations, contact Rick Gardner, foundations development officer, at rgardner@iibec.org.

6 – National Frame Builders Association (NFBA)

NFBA also has a charity organization that you can support! The NFBA Foundation works specifically to strengthen the future of the post-frame building industry. One of their biggest initiatives is their scholarship program, which opens doors for students who are current employees of NFBA member companies or family members of those current employees pursuing higher education fields that support construction and the post-frame profession.

In addition to this, the NFBA Foundation also supports key training programs and research initiatives around the industry, such as the new edition of the NFBA Post Frame Building Design Manual.

Roofing contractors come together to provide warmth, care and cheer to veteran community members in need.

As the holiday season nears, many industry professionals are working hard to end the year with a bang, securing fall and winter projects, following up with clients and finalizing budgets. The Associated Roofing Contractors (ARC) of Oregon and Southwest Washington is gearing up to give back.

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Alex Tolle spoke with ARC’s new president, Mark Madeira, and secretary, Torrey Yungeberg, about ARC's upcoming holiday dinner and auction. A beloved ARC tradition, this event includes a happy hour, dinner, keynote speakers and an auction fundraiser to support a chosen charity.

For the third year, the proceeds of this fundraiser will go to Fort Kennedy, a nonprofit that serves unhoused veterans in Portland, Oregon.

“We are all so fortunate to be able to do what we do. We're able to provide for our families. We're able to help provide for other families. None of that would be possible, though, without our veterans,” Mark shared.

ARC’s past fundraisers have already made a huge impact. In 2023, they raised about $34,000, and in 2024 they raised about $45,000.

“That makes up about 10-15% of Fort Kennedy’s entire budget for the year,” Torrey stated. “Their budget covers the cost of staffing, supplies for the center like food and water, bus passes for the veterans, rental assistance and gifts for the children of the veterans.”

In addition to funding their annual budget, ARC’s fundraiser also ensures veterans and their children have presents to unwrap and enjoy. A past ARC holiday dinner included a coat drive to provide warmth for Fort Kennedy veterans in the winter months.

“It's extremely important to take care of our veterans, especially at that time of year,” Mark said. “People need assistance every once in a while.”

“It was so heartwarming to be able to give back,” Torrey added.

This year, ARC of Oregon and Southwest Washington is hoping their holiday dinner and auction will raise even more money for Fort Kennedy.
