If so, it should always be done using hand tools with a shearing action, such as aviation snips or sheet metal shears. Can you paint a metal roof? 

Yes — but we don’t recommend it. Our roof panels are factory-painted under controlled conditions, ensuring consistent performance and long-term protection. Field painting often lacks the precision necessary for a smooth, uniform finish, resulting in uneven surfaces and trapped debris that can lead to peeling, cracking or accelerated aging. 

While painting a metal roof in the field may not necessarily compromise the structural durability of the roof itself, it can impact the aesthetic appearance and long-term finish performance. Factory-applied coatings are still the best choice for maximizing both the beauty and lifespan of your metal roofing system. 

How do you maintain a metal roof? 

Metal roofs are low-maintenance but not maintenance-free. The best approach? A simple rinse with a hose or pressure sprayer is sufficient. This helps wash away salt, dirt and organic matter that can degrade the painted surface over time. Getting the details right and knowing your environment can make or break a metal roofing project. 

In this episode of Roofing Road Trips®, host Karen Edwards sat down with Richard King and Erik Hillhouse from ASC Building Products  to dig into the real complexities of working with metal roofing. Richard and Erik offer compelling insights for contractors thinking about expanding into the booming metal roofing market. 

Erik, a seasoned sales rep with more than two decades in the building supply world, believes that success in metal roofing starts with precision. “Detail, detail, detail,” he stressed. “Some of the things you can take for granted with other materials — you cannot do that with metal.” From pitch to dimensions to trim angles, every specification must be correct before production begins. And with metal roofing being made to order, there’s no easy fix for getting it wrong. 

To help contractors navigate this challenge, ASC offers more than just product catalogs. Their team provides takeoff services, design tools and technical support. One of the standout features is their visualizer platform, which allows users to upload images of their home and preview different roofing styles and colors. “You just take your phone, stand outside the front of your house and take a photo,” Richard explained. “Then within a couple of minutes you can be visualizing a new metal roof.” 

But knowing what looks good is only half the battle. Contractors also need to match the right product to the right environment. “Anyone living on the coast or near saltwater, that’s a completely different specialty paint system,” Erik said. He explained that warranties vary based on paint systems like SMP and Kynar and choosing incorrectly can lead to fading, chipping or even warranty exclusions. “We’re warranting against chalk and fade,” he added. “If an act of God happens and a tree goes through your roof, we do not warranty that.”

Erik joked, “Start with the dog house or a shed.” Richard added that it’s not the panels themselves that are hard, it’s the trim details and ensuring the final system is fully weatherproof.

It’s not simply a matter of matching screw to substrate. Head profile, thread count, drill point style, corrosion resistance and even UV exposure must all be factored in.  

Trim and flashing aren’t one-size-fits-all components; they need to be measured and fabricated to fit the specific demands of each project. Relying on catalog dimensions can lead to gaps, exposure and failure, especially on custom builds. The focus should be on how the detail functions, not just its size on paper. This level of precision becomes even more critical when a weather-tight warranty is involved. Securing that warranty isn’t just about checking a box; it requires proper planning, detailed reviews, field inspections and the use of approved materials like factory-applied sealants. If the system isn’t built to spec from the start, the warranty won’t apply.

Roofing materials get a lot of attention, but an often-overlooked weak spot is also right at the top of the home: ridge vents. Without the right protection, these ventilation points can act like open invitations for embers, turning attics into tinderboxes. In fire-prone regions, safeguarding your home means thinking beyond the surface — and it starts with choosing proven solutions like those offered by ASC Building Products and understanding the critical role ridge venting plays in wildfire defense.

California building code requirements for ridge vents

According to Chapter 7A of the California Building Code (CBC), ridge vents installed in wildfire-prone areas must meet the following criteria (CBC 706A.2.1):

1 – Mesh covering: Vents must be covered with a mesh that has openings no smaller than 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) and no larger than 1/8 inch (3.2 mm).

2 – Noncombustible material: The mesh material must be noncombustible.

3 – Corrosion resistance: The mesh material must be resistant to corrosion.

Alternatively, vents may be tested for compliance with ASTEM E2886. The IWUIC follows similar guidelines but allows openings of up to 1/4 inch.

These strict requirements limit the options available for compliant ridge vent products. Foam-based or non-metal venting systems typically do not meet these standards, making metal-based ridge vent solutions essential.

What is standing seam roofing?
