How Tremco gave the Bury St. Edmund's team full of peace of mind in their new roof.

Bury St Edmunds Train Station required building envelope works due to the aging condition of the Grade II listed building managed by Walker Construction. A significant issue was water damage caused by water ingress through an inefficiently waterproofed roof, invasive plant species growing through brickwork and debris around drainage points.

To address the problem, a roof condition report was produced, which recommended an overlay of the existing roof to restore its waterproofing. Safety was crucial due to the works being carried out near a live railway line, so scaffolding and a harness system were installed to ensure the safety of Vision Specialist Contracting (SC), the trusted partner of Tremco, who carried out the installation.

A rigorous waste removal system was put in place to prevent construction debris from being blown onto the tracks, as it could cause railway delays. Before the work could commence, the roof had to be cleared of invasive species and coping stones weighing between 120kg and 150kg each were removed and washed.

AlphaGuard PUMA Liquid Applied Flat Roofing System was chosen for the refurbishment works. This system is fast-curing in low and high temperatures, certified with Broof(t4) classification and comes with a 25-year warranty. To create a smooth foundation for the liquid applied solution, TremVap was installed. AlphaGuard PUMA was then applied seamlessly to the roof and details, including drainage outlets and parapet walls. Coping stones were reinstated to maintain the building’s aesthetics.

The client, Walker Construction, validated how expertly the project was installed by Vision SC, with no reported accidents and the team’s quick response to overcome issues and reflected on the Tremco's role:

Tremco’s service from initial design support, to supply and warranty, was extremely efficient making the roof refurbishment part of the wider project simple. It also gave the train stations’ management team full peace of mind that they can now use the internal facility below without worrying about damage from leaks.

Protecting a hospital estate from water intrusion with a liquid-applied roof.

When Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust spotted leaks within the estates department’s building, concerns were that the roof had reached its end of its functional life and had started to let in water. This water intrusion was causing a variety of issues, including that it was saturating the building's insulation which caused the loss of valuable heat implicating occupants within.

To address the problem, a roof survey report was produced by Tremco, which recommended an overlay of the existing 600m2 roof to restore its waterproofing. The scaffolding was installed around the building. It required a specialised configuration on the left side to cover vertical rooflights to mitigate the risk of workers falling through.

As it was a hospital estate, with 24/7 operations to consider, safety parameters were critical. The roof had one point of entry and designated area for supplies. AAC Waterproofing, a Trusted Partner of Tremco, had to prepare the surface, including the removal of loose chippings, and then mechanically fixing boarding.

TremVap AVCL was installed to the now smooth surface, followed by the liquid-applied roof solution. The roof included a number of penetrations to detail, but as the system is self-determining this made the installation simple and efficient.

AlphaGuard PUMA Liquid Applied Flat Roofing System was chosen for the refurbishment works. This system is fast-curing in low and high temperatures, certified with Broof(t4) classification, and comes with a 25-year warranty. It was applied seamlessly to roof detailing. Project was completed within the desired time frame of three weeks to reduce construction disruption to the healthcare estate.

Reflecting on the project, the Deputy Head of Estates shared some thoughts:

We are pleased with the completed roof works by AAC Waterproofing and the quick and efficient system supplied and warranted by Tremco. Having a warranty in place gives us peace of mind that the roof will remain watertight, which, in turn, will mitigate the associated risks with water ingress for the building and the occupants below.

Tranforming an industrial estate into a vibrant neighbourhood space.

Grand Union is transforming the former derelict industrial estate into a vibrant canal side neighbourhood, opening up previously closed off sections of the Grand Union Canal and River Brent for the benefit of the whole community.

A new canal side Piazza offers a vibrant space encompassing shops, cafés, restaurants and a community centre (offering classes, workshops and events) providing spaces in which to congregate and socialise, bringing new life to the banks. A state-of-the-art multi-storey industrial hub and high-quality workspace will make this regeneration project location a desirable place to live, work and connect.

The project details

StructureCare were engaged by Berkley Group to install 13,000m² of AlphaGuard Blueshield Inverted Roof System including the installation of various surface finishes to the first phase of the development which covered blocks (A,B,C and D) and recreational podium areas.

All of the block roofs (A, B, C and D) had biodiverse roof build ups applied enhancing the sustainability of this new development, meeting specific planning requirements. The roofs also offset the ‘brown field’ site that existed before the building was constructed.

These roofs had a biodiverse seed mix, containing an average of 30 sown species from certified native stock, hand sown at 4g/m². Each of the biodiverse roofs were encapsulated by paving to support access for future maintenance of the living roofs to ensure its longevity.

All waterproofing work to these areas were installed by in-house StructureCare employees. External finishes across the roofs, terraces and podium were instructed and managed by StructureCare including the biodiverse roofs, paving and man-safe systems. This delivered a harmonious system approach across the development.

In addition, every m2 of AlphaGuard Blueshield applied is electronically integrity tested. This process involves using a charged metal broom above the membrane to create an electrical potential difference. Once this process is complete any identified breaches are waterproofed and retested.

The result

By using AlphaGuard Blueshield Inverted Roof System as the structural waterproofing solution, the space gets benefits such as:

Rapid installation and cure

Excellent crack bridging

Contractors complete a successful shopping centre reroof thanks to Tremco's roof diagnostics.

A significant plant building situated on the roof of Centrale Shopping Centre in Croydon was leaking. The roof was covered in limestone chippings that made it near impossible to visually inspect and locate the source of the issue.

Before any thorough investigation could be undertaken, scaffolding was erected, and tonnes of limestone chippings were removed by a scarifying machine, manually bagged and hoisted down. This allowed for roof diagnostics to be carried out. Roof diagnostics entails initial core samples to evaluate, not only the build-up, but to establish moisture data benchmarks.

Once complete, a thermal scanning camera can then pinpoint areas of moisture and its severity to give data-led insights of problematic areas. Resulting in an informed cost-effective solution to refurbishment.

The diagnosis

A comprehensive report and specification were produced by Tremco, which recommended an overlay of the existing 700m2 roof to restore its waterproofing, and to replace, like for like, 80m2 of roof that was badly affected by water ingress. Some of the chippings were heavily embedded within the existing waterproofing.

It was decided to line the roof with TremPly to deliver a coat-able surface that was compliant to BROOF(t4) classification. StructureCare, an internal contracting arm of Tremco, installed the TremPly and coated the new surface with Tremco’s liquid applied roof solution; AlphaGuard PUMA.

The solution

AlphaGuard PUMA Liquid Applied Flat Roofing System is a fast-curing solution in both low and high temperatures, ideal for installs throughout all seasons, certified with BROOF(t4) classification, BBA certified and delivers a 25-year warranty.

The facilities project manager on site shared some thoughts on the project:

The roof diagnostics followed by a holistic report meant we could visually see the areas of moisture in the plant room’s roof. We knew the solution specified was therefore the most suitable and cost-effective to resolve the issue. This service will be utilised on other roofs of the shopping centre to ensure they still remain watertight and/or to identify issues... StructureCare delivered a high-quality install and will inevitably work with them again on future works.

Overall, the project was completed within the desired time to minimise construction disruption to the shopping centre’s operations. And as the solution was specified and supplied by Tremco and delivered by StructureCare, it granted a complete single source approach to refurbishment.

Learn how Axel Group used the AlphaGuard Bio Liquid Applied Roofing System to refurbish this commercial roofing project.

The roof at The Quorum, a fully occupied and operational office block in Bristol, required refurbishment to improve long-term waterproofing performance. With tenants working on-site throughout the project, the works needed to be delivered with minimal disruption, maintaining safe access and uninterrupted daily operations.

The existing single ply roof system required enhancement rather than full removal, and multiple roof-mounted elements — including plant areas, handrails and pigeon netting — added complexity to sequencing and detailing. Ongoing maintenance access also needed to be clearly defined and protected within the refurbished roof layout.

The plan

An overlay solution was selected to minimise disruption to the occupied building. The AlphaGuard® BIO system was applied over the existing single ply roof, providing a seamless, fully bonded waterproofing layer with enhanced durability. New plant housing was constructed, with all associated roof details formed and fully integrated into the waterproofing system to ensure long-term watertight integrity. Designated walkway routes were installed and clearly demarcated, providing safe access for future maintenance while protecting the roof surface.

Existing handrails and pigeon netting were carefully removed to allow works to proceed and then reinstated following completion of the waterproofing works. Perimeter gutters were fully coated and detailed as part of the roof system, ensuring continuity of waterproofing and improved rainwater management.

The result

The completed works delivered a high-performance, seamless roof system suitable for a live office environment. The AlphaGuard BIO overlay extended the life of the existing roof while improving waterproofing and durability, all without impacting the building’s occupants.

Integrated plant housings, protected walkways, refurbished gutters and reinstated safety features have ensured the roof is both functional and maintainable. The project was successfully completed with minimal disruption, providing The Quorum with a resilient, long-term roofing solution for a fully occupied office block.

RoofersCoffeeShop.uk was honored to be on site in Liverpool celebrating the best of the U.K. liquid roofing industry.

The energy in Liverpool was undeniable as the Liquid Roofing and Waterproofing Association (LRWA) hosted its sold-out 2026 awards gala, bringing together more than 430 roofing professionals for a night dedicated to craftsmanship, innovation and community. RoofersCoffeeShop.uk was proud to be there, sharing in the excitement and recognizing the outstanding work shaping the future of liquid roofing and waterproofing.

From the moment the evening began, it was clear that this event continues to grow in both prestige and impact. Now in its eighth year, the LRWA Awards have become one of the most anticipated events in the U.K. roofing calendar, highlighting the very best across projects, people and performance.

Recognizing the people behind the projects

The Student of the Year award went to Harry Robinson of Blackpool Industrial Roofing, whose dedication, professionalism and passion for the trade set him apart. Completing his NVQ ahead of schedule and showing up every day ready to learn, Harry represents the future of the industry.

Trainer of the Year was awarded to Shane Copestake of Triflex, recognized for his engaging training style and commitment to developing skilled applicators through clear communication and hands-on learning.

And in a moment that truly resonated across the room, Ray McCarten received the Special Contribution Award. With more than four decades in the industry, his work in training and workforce development has helped shape today’s skilled workforce and elevate standards across the sector.

Showcasing standout projects across the U.K.

What stood out most this year was the level of excellence across every category, especially in the Liquid Waterproofing Project of the Year where StructureCare, a Tremco company, earned top honors for their work on the Bell Street Green Transport Hub in Dundee.
Sustainability and innovation take center stage

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s awards was the continued focus on sustainability. Now in its second year, the Sustainability Project of the Year category evaluated entries on environmental impact, social value, innovation and responsible supply chain practices.

Projects like 76 Southbank showed how roofing is playing a critical role in achieving broader environmental goals, from biodiversity gains to reduced carbon impact and long-term building performance.

This aligns with what we are seeing globally. Roofing is no longer just about protection. It is about performance, energy efficiency and long-term environmental responsibility.

A night that reflects a growing industry

As LRWA leadership shared throughout the evening, the continued growth of the awards reflects the strength and momentum of the liquid roofing sector, with innovation and quality continuing to raise the bar.

From our perspective at RoofersCoffeeShop.uk, this event reinforced something we see across the entire roofing industry. When contractors, manufacturers and associations come together to share knowledge and celebrate success, it drives the entire industry forward.

Looking ahead

The LRWA Awards 2026 were more than just a celebration. They were a powerful reminder of the talent, dedication and innovation happening across the U.K. roofing market.

This product highlights the extensive independent fire testing Tremco has commissioned delivering total peace of mind to specifiers and building owners.

With space across the U.K. at such a premium, utilising every available inch can bring a whole host of benefits. With AlphaGuard Blueshield from Tremco, external finishes can be applied at roof level meaning, buildings can be optimised to encompass a range of recreational and sustainable finishes from paving with seating and planters, to green and blue roofs. This can help encourage local biodiversity, support the human need for nature in the built environment and mitigate flood risk (SuDS).

Tremco recognises the importance of independent testing to reassure building stakeholders. In response, they have sought extensive testing to ensure its tailored systems are perfectly aligned to the specific requirements of sustainable roofs being:

Highly durable: Designed to withstand the load bearing weight of external finishes whether a podium or green roof.

Resistant: Engineered with root resistant technologies to avoid puncture causing water ingress.

Environmentally friendly: Ensuring no toxication to the living nature of green roofs and biodiverse roofs.

Safey and compliance: Meeting the latest building standards for thermal efficiency and fire safety.

The AlphaGuard Blueshield system has been extensively tested and independently certified by the BBA in the UK with the highest possible fire classification; Broof(t4) under BS EN 130501-5 2016.

Tremco's team was comprehensive in their approach, testing a broad range of scenarios combining AlphaGuard Blueshield with varying insulation types (EPS and XPS) and thicknesses to ensure that all solutions were compliant with thermal efficiency standards whilst achieving Broof(t4) classification.

The system has also been vigorously fire tested with external finishes, including sedum, ballasted and paving systems for green roofs, recreational podiums and for the foundation for solar PV. Additionally, further fire tests were carried out to include a blue roof build-up, testing with sedum, ballasted and paving systems.

Tremco’s expanded approach to testing means that the build-up, with its combined elements, work harmoniously together in mitigating the risks of fire. It should be reassuring that whether an inverted or blue roof inverted system is required – AlphaGuard Blueshield is fully compliant to fire safety requirements. The NHBC considers fire performance a key component of building safety. Therefore, the thorough approach Tremco has adopted should give specifiers total peace of mind.

Alongside the extensive fire testing, it also has a certified durability of up to the design life of the roof of which it is incorporated. The system complies with BS 6229:2018 and guidance outlined in NHBC technical requirements for flat roofs and balconies.

Expertly formulated by chemists to be safe for the environment, along with its ease of application, AlphaGuard Blueshield delivers the perfect balance between design, aesthetics, durability and practical performance.

This new system advances the world of restoration coatings with less downtime and more value.

The new AlphaGuard FC LO Roofing System, now available in the U.S. and Europe, is designed for refurbishment by minimising challenges faced on jobs. This roofing system represents a significant advancement in restoration coatings. If you're a contractor looking to increase job site efficiency, reduce delays and deliver exceptional results, extend your roofing system portfolio with AlphaGuard FC LO.

Why AlphaGuard FC LO stands out

1 - Low odour formula

Traditional roofing systems often emit strong, lingering odours that can disrupt operations and make installations over occupied spaces challenging. The low-odour formula of AlphaGuard FC LO ensures minimal disruption by eliminating strong smells. This feature is particularly ideal for projects conducted over 24 hour operational facilities such as hospitals or domestic spaces.

2 - Quick cure for faster results

Time is money in the roofing industry, and delays can be costly. With AlphaGuard FC LO, contractors benefit from its quick-curing ability, with curing times as short as 30 minutes. This ensures faster project completion and reduces downtime for building owners, making it an optimal choice for fast restorations or projects requiring minimal disruption.

3 - Single-coat application

Unlike other waterproofing systems on the market, AlphaGuard FC LO eliminates the need for attending site for a second topcoat. With its singular coat application, contractors save significant time, labour and costs. What’s more, the system reduces the necessity of extended cost of safety equipment such as scaffolding as it’s a minimum 30% faster to install as it mitigates delays between two coat systems from weather-related delays and availability of applicators.

4 - High-solids formula for trusted durability

AlphaGuard FC LO boasts a high-solids composition, ensuring that when installed correctly, the membrane maintains its intended thickness. This gives contractors the confidence to deliver a reliable and durable roof every time.

5 - High reflectivity = energy savings

AlphaGuard FC LO isn’t just great for roofing contractors; building owners benefit too. With its high-reflectivity design, this system helps reduce rooftop temperatures, resulting in lower energy costs by decreasing the workload on cooling and rooftop equipment.

Add value for your clients with AlphaGuard FC LO

In today’s competitive roofing market, standing out means delivering fast, efficient and cost-effective solutions. The new AlphaGuard FC LO system helps you do just that, offering clients a smarter alternative to full roof replacement by preserving existing structures, minimising waste and extending roof life — all backed by up to a 25-year warranty.
