How Franklin International’s culture and history drive the future of adhesion.

For nearly a century, Franklin International has built its reputation on trust, innovation and a people-first approach that continues to shape its role in the global adhesives market. The video “The Franklin International Family: A Tradition of Trust, Innovation & Excellence” offers a behind-the-scenes look at how family ownership, product leadership and long-term relationships have guided the company since its founding in 1935.

Franklin’s legacy is rooted in solving real-world challenges through meaningful innovation. The company helped pioneer several breakthroughs that remain influential today, including the first liquid hide glue in ready-to-use form and the first adhesive used in peel-and-stick postage stamps. As the video notes, “Franklin has built a legacy of innovation, quality and commitment to excellence. Their Titebond brand is the most recognized name in woodworking glues.” That history continues to inform the company’s purpose and its vision to be the most trusted adhesion company in the world.

Trust, according to Franklin leaders, is earned through consistent action rather than short-term gains. “What’s important in being the most trusted adhesion company in the world is building partnerships with people,” David Rowe, director of reactive products, shares in the video. “We’ve earned trust with our customers through our actions, not just by chasing profits.” That philosophy extends beyond products and into the relationships Franklin maintains with customers across industries, from professional builders to makers and DIYers who rely on Titebond products in projects meant to last generations.

The video also highlights the internal culture that supports Franklin’s long-term success. Employees describe an environment shaped by respect, accountability and close connections to ownership. “What makes this place special is the people — the way you don’t feel like a number, the way you’re treated as an individual,” expressed Chad Blackburn, a Franklin production manager. “That culture allows Franklin to compete globally while remaining grounded in its family-owned values.

As Franklin International moves forward under fourth-generation family leadership, its focus remains unchanged: deliver dependable adhesive solutions, invest in people and build trust that stands the test of time.

Designed for professionals, this sealant offers exceptional tooling and a watertight seal for years to come.

When it comes to sealing joints to last, Titebond’s UA 920 Sealant brings professional strength and flexibility to nearly any job site. Developed by Titebond, the elastomeric urethane acrylic formula is engineered for long-term performance on both interior and exterior projects.

With its advanced adhesive properties and UV resistance, the product is ideal for sealing dynamic joints such as windows, doors and siding. The sealant’s ±35 percent joint movement capability allows it to expand and contract without cracking, keeping out water, air and dirt through seasonal changes. UV resistance helps preserve color and performance even under harsh sunlight, to ensure a clean, professional look.

UA 920 can fill joints up to two inches wide and is paintable when using a water-based latex paint that doesn’t contain plasticizer. Cleanup is simple — just water before curing — and the sealant tools easily, with a 10- to 15-minute working time for a quarter-inch bead. Full cure typically occurs within three to seven days, depending on conditions.

It contains less than one percent VOC, is freeze-thaw stable and meets top ASTM and Federal Specifications for sealant quality. Each 10.1-ounce cartridge delivers consistent results, and the product is available in 12 colors: white, dark bronze, medium bronze, black, gray, clay, almond, woodtone, dark brown, tan, beige and clear.

With a 50-year warranty and a 24-month shelf life when stored properly, UA 920 is built for pros who value longevity and high performance. It performs on a wide range of substrates and remains permanently flexible, striking a unique balance between durability and flexibility.

From batch codes to bonded fingers, these FAQs clear up the stickiest situations.

Ever tried to decode a product label and felt like you needed a secret decoder ring? Or glued your fingers together on a Sunday project and wondered if your skin would ever be free again? Whether you're a seasoned woodworker or a DIY newcomer, navigating adhesives like Titebond from Franklin International can raise some oddly specific questions. What happens when you glue wet wood? How do you get glue out of your shirt — or off your hands? And why won’t that Instant Bond glue actually bond? Don’t worry — Titebond answers the most common and useful questions straight from the source. Here's what you need to know before your next glue-up goes sideways.

How do I read the lot numbers?

Current format for product made after 1/1/2019: Ayymmddbbb

The first letter is A for made in America, the first two digits after the A is the last two digits of the year of manufacture, the fourth and fifth digits represent the month, the sixth and seventh digits represent the day of the month and the last three digits represent the batch number for that day.

Example: A190615023 – This material was manufactured on June 15, 2019

Format for product made prior to 1/1/2019: Aymmddbbbb

The first letter is A for made in America, the first digit after the A is the last digit of the year of manufacture, the third and fourth digits represent the month, the fifth and sixth digits represent the day of the month and the last four digits represent the batch number.

Example: A604270023 – This material was manufactured on April 27, 2016

How do I remove Instant Bond from my skin or project?

Place a small amount of acetone on the affected area and rub until the adhesive has been removed. Please follow solvent vendor’s precautions. Nail polish remover can also be used to remove adhesive. Be cautious as these products are flammable and can irritate skin.

Will Titebond Wood Glues wash out of clothing?

If Titebond Wood Glues are accidentally spilled on clothing, it is important to immediately wet it with water and keep it wet until all adhesive is rubbed off of the clothing. Do not put the clothing item in the dryer until all adhesive is removed. Heat will melt the adhesive into the fabric and it will be permanent. Titebond II and Titebond III if allowed to dry will not release from fabric. A mixture of Acetone/Water/Vinegar will soften the adhesive but will not dissolve it. Scraping the softened adhesive should remove a majority of the adhesive.

What if Instant Bond doesn’t bond?

Ensure the surface is clean and dry. If dust or dirt is on the intended bonded surface, use a small amount of acetone until clean. Acidic surfaces (wood with dark tannic acids, some leathers and metals) can inhibit curing of the Instant Bond adhesive. Use the Titebond Activator to start the curing process or, spray one side with Titebond Activator and spread Titebond Instant bond on the other surface for an instant bond

Franklin International places the spotlight on their Manosso team in Brazil!

Recently, a team from TJ Manosso in Brazil visited the Franklin International headquarters in Columbus, Ohio! While there, the team celebrated almost four decades of partnership and collaboration with Franklin. Their recipients in Ohio were thrilled to celebrate the trusted team that has been the cornerstone of Franklin’s international success in South America.

Manosso has been the exclusive representative of Franklin in Brazil since 1990. The story began with Tino Manozzo, who was searching for “a solution for companies exporting wood furniture, that faced problems of bonding quality.” That search led to Franklin and, eventually, the partnership that exists today.

When asked about the visiting team, Danielle Milam, Franklin’s VP of International, shared, “We were delighted to receive the TJ Manosso team from Brazil, Franklin’s representative in Brazil for over three decades. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize their commitment, dedication and exemplary service to Franklin and our customers in Brazil.” She went on, “Franklin is very proud of our association with the Manosso team, and the success we have achieved together. We are honored to have a partner that embodies the same values as Franklin, and who has upheld a high standard of integrity. It has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my job to work with the Manosso team over the span of 35 years, building the market together.”

The Manosso team’s visit underscored the strong foundation of trust and shared goals that has been built over the years. As Franklin continues to innovate and expand, the bond with Manosso serves as a testament to the power of long-term partnerships and mutual trust.

Learn how this company built bonds and achieved success last year!

2025 marks 90 years of Franklin Adhesives & Polymers (a Franklin International division) innovative performance and trusted solutions!
Take a step through time with us as we look at Franklin International’s history.

Today, Franklin International is known as one of the largest privately held polymer, adhesive and sealant manufacturers in the U.S. It is because of Franklin’s dedication to excellence and innovation that we have been able reach that level. Now, as an industry leader, Franklin continues to push forward, solving technical problems, improving product quality and pioneering new developments.

Looking back on the history that has led us here makes us very proud. Our story holds over 90 years of high-quality wood adhesives and solutions, starting in 1935.

1935

We opened our doors as The Franklin Glue Company, launching the first ready-to-use liquid hide glue for fine furniture manufacturing. This unique formula required no heating or mixing, and could be applied at room temperature, unlike traditional technologies. It streamlined the gluing process and revolutionized the craftsmanship of wood-to-wood bonding.

1951

The Franklin Glue Company developed the first water-based, aliphatic resin glue, another proprietary formula that would change the woodworking landscape forever. From this development, the Titebond® brand was born and quickly became the preferred choice of wood furniture manufacturers and woodworking professionals alike.

1953

On Chestnut Street in the heart of downtown Columbus, Ohio, Franklin’s first polymer was developed. It was in this location that our Polymers Production Facility, specifically our Duracet® and Covinax® product lines, began manufacturing innovative base polymers. This core competency is an important part of our vertical integration and remains an essential part of our operations today.

1954

To accommodate significant growth and innovation, The Franklin Glue Company relocated just south of the city to 2020 Bruck Street. At this location, we would continue to expand our product development, production and packaging capabilities and where our corporate headquarters still resides today.

1960s

During this time, we developed proprietary pressure sensitive adhesive technology specifically for tapes, labels and various types of graphic applications.

In an effort to support new business opportunities, a new production plant was opened on-site with a focus on manufacturing wood glues, adhesives and sealants.

1970s

We entered the wood flooring market with revolutionary, solvent-based wood flooring adhesives, with a focus on Franklin 711. This formula provided superior adhesion and easy installation, allowing it to quickly become the industry standard in glue down wood flooring.‍

In 1971, to be exact, Franklin International developed the first construction adhesive to pass the American Plywood Association’s AFG-01 (ASTM D 3498) performance standard for subfloor installations. AFG-01 requires that adhesives applied at the jobsite be strong, durable, resistant to extreme weather and able to permanently fill material gaps. Franklin continues to be very heavily involved with the APA in furthering the testing, quality and performance of construction adhesives.

1991

Franklin developed and was first to market a one-part wood glue that passed the ANSI/HPVA Type II specification for water resistance. This launched our Titebond® II Premium Wood Glue to the retail market and inspired the Multibond® 2000 series of Industrial wood glues. We also launched a series of two-part Advantage® glues, providing additional performance for specific wood manufacturing applications.

2004

Committed to progressing the industry, Franklin developed the first one-part wood glue to pass the more stringent ANSI/HPVA Type I specification for water resistance.

Titebond® III Ultimate Wood Glue was born, and this water-resistant formula created a new category of exterior woodworking. Today, Titebond® III continues to be the preferred choice for professionals in the industry.

2007

Franklin launched the first water-based construction adhesive program designed for construction, remodeling and repair projects. Utilizing internal polymer development and proprietary manufacturing processes, we were able to produce high-performance, solvent-free alternatives to the traditional solvent-based programs.

2021

A new manufacturing facility in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, expanded Franklin’s caulk and sealant capabilities to support the increased demand of water-based formulations. Our team members offer years of high-level expertise, and the plant provides flexibility and streamlined operations, all of which has been a significant asset to Franklin.

2024

For over four decades, Franklin International supplied polymers to support Hexion’s PVA and EPI business. We're thrilled about the expansion of our operations into the Pacific Northwest regions of the United States and Canada, thanks to the acquisition of the Portland, Oregon facility and the innovative technology Hexion has developed. We look forward to the opportunity to provide more value with the addition of Hexion’s PVA and EPI Emulsion technology to our distinguished portfolio of adhesives for wood assembly.
Titebond’s WeatherMaster is making waves, or blocking them, with its versatility and durability.

While at METALCON 2024, The Coffee Shops™ hosted a sound stage that was sponsored by New Tech Machinery. This gave us the opportunity to meet up with new and old friends around the industry to hear what they’ve been up to and what’s coming up next. One such person to stop by was Matthew (Matt) Puracchio who works in marketing for Titebond, which is one of Franklin International’s brands. Matt shared a bit about his company, saying, “We were founded in 1935. A lot of you guys probably know us for our wood glues, but we offer a full line of anything that sticks to anything, so we have caulks and sealants, construction adhesives, flooring adhesives, kind of the whole gambit.”

Part of that wide suite of offerings is Titebond’s metal roof sealant. This is one of their premium construction products and was one of the things they highlighted at METALCON. Matt explained, “We call it WeatherMaster and I think that's one of the biggest things that separates us from anyone else in the market is that we offer it in 125 different colors.” This allows you to color match to pretty much anything you will find in the field to make an aesthetically cohesive and structurally sound roof seal. Matt shared a bit of what inspired Titebond to create this product, saying, “We want to help our customers and with this, they know that if they have a color, they can actually get it. You don't have to wait a couple of months for that... They also know that you use this once and you’re good. That’s it.”

One of the factors that makes the WeatherMaster so structurally sound and versatile is its flexibility. Matt elaborated, “Not only is this a good adhesive for metals but is going to be flexible as well.” With all of these benefits, it’s no wonder that contractors in the field are loving the WeatherMaster. Many contractors have shared that they keep coming back for more of this product because they don’t have to worry about call backs with it. Matt explained, “They know when they use it's going to adhere to anything, no matter if it's wet, frozen, treated materials. It has that continued flexibility for a lifetime. They don't have to worry about it coming apart and going back and repairing that job. No one wants to go back to a job.”
