style=' '  loading='lazy' />

Building Products of Canada launches new Signature line of shingles.

With back-to-nature continuing to trend in home decor, leading roofing and building material company BP Canada is taking the concept to new heights with the launch of an innovative line of nature-inspired, multi-toned shingles, called Signature.

An industry first, the new shingles feature timeless colors, developed by BP Canada’s breakthrough Chroma® Color Lab, that can be blended together to deliver unprecedented looks and patterns. Behind their breathtaking appearance, the shingles incorporate the latest technological advances, delivering top performance and maximum protection overhead.

“The Signature line brings new life and a modern twist to traditional shingles, which have barely seen a change in tints in decades,” said BP Canada Marketing Director Nathalie Lambert.

Available in a range of beautiful colors – 12 offered in the east and 10 in the west to cater to different regional consumer preferences – the shingles’ uber-natural shades are inspired by fine food, travel and nature. Colors in eastern regions, for example, feature hues such as Mesquite, Cumin, Quinoa, Muskoka, Soho, Fjord and Arabica, while western shades include Rye, Fiji, Edinburgh, Manhattan, Stetson, Jasper and Oregon – all conjuring up images of the sites, smells and tastes of their namesakes, from complex, nuanced blacks and greys to multi-toned browns and neutrals.

Elevating the color offering is BP Chroma Color Lab’s proprietary new Profusio™ design patterns, which create customized roofing by combining selected Signature shades. With four unique patterns currently available – and more to come in the future – Profusio merges two shingle colors and alternates them over successive rows to create a third color that produces a complementary or contrasting visual effect.

The result is an expression of people’s unique sense of style, Lambert explained, calling the concept “roofing by design.”

“Home decor – both interior and exterior – is an expression of people’s personalities,” she said. “Now, we’re giving homeowners a first-of-its-kind opportunity to affix their signature to their roofs with unique natural looks that set their properties apart and blend into a home’s facade like never before.”

On the performance side, Signature shingles provide superior protection against blow-offs and wind-driven rain thanks to their high resistance to nail pull-through and innovative Weather-Tite® Plus Technology featuring the Hurricane Band®. They come with a standard wind warranty of 220 km/h, typically associated with category 4 hurricanes.

With an FM 4473 Class 3 impact resistance rating for long-term protection against the elements, the shingles resist hail the size of golf balls.

            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

A historic church and customized residential homes are among the projects honored this year.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) announced the winning projects of the 2023 Excellence in Asphalt Roofing Awards Program. The program recognizes low- and steep-slope asphalt roofing projects across North America based on four categories: Reasons for Selecting Asphalt, Performance, Beauty and Distinction.

“This year was record-breaking, with 127 submissions celebrating success stories, innovative solutions, and complex artistry while promoting the core benefits of asphalt roofing systems,” stated Reed Hitchcock, ARMA executive vice president. “In addition to the increased number of participants, it is more apparent every year that asphalt continues to solve technical roofing challenges while providing beauty and value for both steep- and low-slope applications.”

KJN Restoration, LLC received the Gold Award for the 7th Day Adventist Church, a one-hundred-plus-year-old church with varying high-pitched roof sections culminating in a 150-foot-tall steeple. The project was challenging due to the extraordinary number of unique conditions that required a one-of-a-kind solution. KJN Restoration, LLC selected GAF® Slateline® Asphalt Shingles for the roof replacement due to its bold shadow lines and tapered cut-outs that look similar to slate at a fraction of the cost. The slate-like asphalt shingles combined with the brick structure are a nod to the heritage of the building. The completed project enhances the skyline and is noticeable from several blocks away, rising well above the neighboring two- and three-story homes.

Achten’s Quality Roofing received the Silver Award for the Seaside Sequim Residence located in the coastal region of the Pacific Northwest. After the previously installed cedar shake roof began to fail, the homeowners wanted a new roof with similar styling and texture to shake but with the benefits of an asphalt roofing system. Achten’s Quality Roofing offered an excellent solution by converting the existing roof to GAF® Grand Canyon® Shingles. The asphalt shingle color accentuates the backdrop of the water and highlights the sprawling home design. Architecturally stunning and now protected from the elements, this asphalt roof provides peace of mind for years to come.

Smith Builders Roofing received the Bronze Award for their work on Schooner Head, an 8,000-square-foot residence with a breathtaking location, high on the rocky cliffs of coastal Maine. This notable project features a steep three-story roof with several arches around the windows and doorways. With its dramatic sweeping roofline split by a magnificent double chimney centerpiece, there is nothing about this property that is understated. Due to the elaborate structure, Smith Builders Roofing selected GAF® Timberline Ultra HD® Shingles to meet the performance and design requirements. Asphalt shingles were the clear choice for this project, providing beauty and durability. The completed project illustrates professionalism and quality workmanship on a complicated building.

Additionally, ARMA recognized four projects as Honorable Mentions.

The North Georgia Equestrian Paradise by Greater American Roofing received an Honorable Mention. This particular project stood out, spanning over 18,000 square feet with 186 squares of roofing material to replace. The GAF® Camelot® II Shingles in Royal Slate was an easy choice for this gorgeous estate. The homeowner desired a roofing system that emphasized the beauty of the surrounding area while withstanding the brutal summer heat and the chilly winter air. Greater American Roofing delivered an impressive update to this one-of-a-kind estate just below the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains.

Penney’s Roofing & General Contracting received an Honorable Mention for the Cobourg Project, a prestigious custom-built home in the gently rolling hills of Cobourg, Ontario. Penney’s Roofing & General Contracting tackled the three-week replacement job with expertise and confronted the steep 17/12 roof pitches. The sophisticated design of the Building Products of Canada Manoir Bavaria premium asphalt shingles provides the house depth and richness in perfect contrast with the pale stone cladding and chimneys. The new roof delivers an elegant old-world charm with slate-looking shingles richly contrasting the exterior.

The Scott Residence in northern California garnered an Honorable Mention for Wedge Roofing. The prominent Queen Anne Victorian-style home, situated in the downtown historic district, encompasses beautiful detail with authentic accouterments. Wedge Roofing removed the existing roofing system and installed a new asphalt shingle roof. The GAF® Timberline HDZ® RS Reflector Series Shingles provide a charming aesthetic while maintaining contemporary roof performance. The new roof complements the structure while accentuating its unique curvatures and ornate features.

Advanced Roofing Inc. received an Honorable Mention for McNab Elementary School, a neighborhood school serving the community of Pompano Beach in South Florida. The facility’s eight buildings needed roof repairs and HVAC improvements. Advanced Roofing Inc. utilized SOPREMA Sopralene Flam 180 FR GR to complete the project while in operation during COVID-19 and hurricane season. The project is a prime example of the reliability and durability of a modified bitumen roof system that will protect students and faculty from the harsh Florida climate. The roof design saved the school district tens of thousands of dollars while enhancing its facility with visual appeal.

ARMA will recognize winning companies during the 2023 International Roofing Expo from March 7-9 in Dallas, Texas.

            title='BP Canada gray is the new black'
            class=''
            style=' '  loading='lazy' />

BP Canada introduces first-of-its kind multi-toned gray shingle to meet changing market demand.

When it comes to enhancing your home’s exterior, aim high. The look of your roof can make or break your property’s curb appeal. That’s the message of leading roofing expert BP Building Products of Canada (BP Canada) in announcing roofing directions for 2023 and beyond. Topping the list of on-trend roofing colors is gray, but not the standard one we’re used to. Think complex, nuanced gray-beige or “greige,” infused with a mix of nature-inspired tones instead.

“Black roofing shingles have always been seen as a safe choice for consumers, but now people are starting to realize that softer neutral shades like gray can actually add more wow-factor to a home’s exterior,” said Nathalie Lambert, marketing director of BP Canada. Although black is currently the top-selling shingle color at BP Canada, gray shingle sales have increased in popularity over the last year, especially in Western Canada, she noted.

“Coming out of the pandemic, consumers tastes are changing as they look for finishes that exude a sense of cozy, calm and security,” explained Lambert, adding that people are craving balance in all aspects of life and this applies to their exterior design choices as well. “They want the best of both worlds – a balance of traditional and contemporary, soothing and invigorating, sober and bold, and a style that asserts individual personality at the same time,” she said.

In response to changing market preferences, BP Canada’s Chroma Colour LabTM has developed a unique multi-toned pale grey shingle called Morning Mist. Part of the brand’s Mystique Collection, Morning Mist is the first shingle color of its kind, consisting of a mix of gray, white and brown, and providing consumers with an alternative to traditional solid gray options currently on the market. The new offering reflects the move towards more saturated, earthy shingle tones that are less uniform than traditional, monochromatic color schemes, Lambert explained.

Other popular looks in roofing for 2023 and beyond include:

Pairing shingles in shades of black, brown and gray with white vertical siding and dark accents to achieve a contrasting effect – increasingly popular in new construction. Conversely, blending dark siding with pale finishes creates an equally harmonious contrast.

Merging shades from the same color family, such as light gray siding with dark trim and gray shingles.

Complementing wood or stone exteriors with warmer, deeper shingle colors that reflect shades found in nature, such as seaside pebbles or wheat.

Combining a mix of shapes, colors and textures to a home’s exterior, including wood, metal or stone finishes, round accents and multi-dimensional shingles.

“No matter what style you prefer, it’s important to choose a roof that’s made to stand the test of time,” Lambert said, noting that thanks to new technologies, today’s high-performance shingles are made to withstand hail the size of golf or billiard balls, as well as category four hurricane winds.

“A roof makes up half of a home's exterior, so it’s wise to invest in shingles that provide the best aesthetic and functionality for the long term,” Lambert emphasized.
