Roofers Photo of the Month August 2008:
Fancy Facelift
This picture was submitted by Steve Davey (Old Man River) of River Roofing, Inc. This is a 1920 Historic home in Portland Oregon that he owns and rents to his daughter. He thought it would be a good candidate for a fancy wood shingle roof.
The original roof had comp over half-inch plywood. He tore the comp off and installed two layers of 15# felt. Steve vented the eaves and added ridge vent by installing elevated 1x4's over the felt. He then added ice and water shield on the radius dormers with copper edge metals and one-inch copper strips every eight feet for moss control.
Cedar shingles were installed with a double shadow course every seven courses and diamond cut shingles every seven courses. Steve use a power saw and radial arm saw for detail cuts at valleys and ridges with brown tin shingles underneath to do closed valleys and ridges. All ridges are hand-made because the ridge vent was seven inches. All coursing worked out to even courses to the ridge. All the dormers were hand nailed because of the narrower exposure. He was sure glad I still have a nail stripper.
