Metal Roofing FAQ October 2008: Metal market survey results
Based on just-released survey results from McGraw-Hill Construction and Analytics, metal roofing has made a significant climb in the residential roofing market, including both new construction and home remodeling projects.
With an overall market share of 11 percent in the re-roofing segment, metal roofing is gaining quickly on competitors' products. Metal roofs protect homes from extreme weather events with durable, attractive solutions that reduce the homeowner's carbon footprint. This survey marks the first double-digit market share for metal roofing products.
The McGraw-Hill Construction and Analytics survey also projected that demand for metal roofing would increase to 1.4 million squares for new construction in 2009 and 13.4 million squares for repair and remodeling. The South Atlantic region, West South Central and Mountain regions will most likely have the greatest demand for residential metal roofing.
McGraw-Hill's annual survey of homebuilders in the United States is designed to determine the characteristics of new housing and the construction practices of new homebuilders. Additionally, McGraw-Hill conducts an annual survey to measure the percent of households buying building products among homeowners and renters.
New Construction survey findings:
The region with the highest percentage of metal roofs was the Mountain region. The New England and Middle Atlantic regions closely followed. With new construction, metal roofing makes up approximately 5.5 percent of the market. The most popular style of metal roofing was the vertical ribbed tile.
The demand for metal roofing will be greatest in the South Atlantic region, followed closely by the West South Central Region.
Residential Repair & Remodeling Survey
The McGraw-Hill Construction Research and Analytics online consumer surveys measured the percent of households installing roofing material (incidence of purchase) and the average square feet and type of roofing material installed per home (purchase rate).
Repair and Remodeling survey findings:
In the repair and remodeling market, metal roofing makes up approximately 11 percent of the market, second only to asphalt. Metal roofing accounted for even higher rates of re-roofing in both the West South Central region and the Mountain region. Vertical ribbed panels were the most popular material in all nine regions.
The greatest demand for metal roofing will be in the South Atlantic region followed by the West South Central and the Pacific regions. When asked to describe the reason they selected metal roofing, 61 percent reported choosing metal roofing for its longevity, while 16 percent stated strength and protection. Other reasons stated: good investment and a metal roof adds value and is an environmentally friendly product.
