egg Said: Tom, I owe you an apology. To a very large degree I share your values and your sentiments so it really does dishonor me and do you a disservice in the bargain to snipe as I did.

I was tired from a similar job of my own yesterday. Ive been through so many forensic incidents the only way I can control my emotions is to turn it into a spiritual exercise. After the discovery is done, the system has to be put back together again and that involves respect more than vindication. Unlike the old days of my passionate youth, nothing gets ripped and nothing gets scattered. I can no longer work on a site where people are slinging scraps and hacking at things. No matter how bad things are, its not the shingles fault. At this point in my life, it starts and ends with care.

Even posting, despite this latest slip. I wasnt there so it was presumptuous of me to criticize so quickly.

I understand egg. I think I know what you see there. And your methods are different. If I was doing this, I try to keep things together a little better too. Rodney's style is more of a slinger. Plus we wren't quite to the end of the rotted area when I took the picture. Nothing here to save yet.

Rodney's worked for me for the better part of 20 yrs. He's amazing. His skill sets I mean. He has way surpassed me in roofing skills. The only things I've taught him.

His techincal skills go beyond roofing.... he is a Mr Fix It. My job is to tell him what I need, hold the other end, buy the parts and/ or get out of the way.

Last winter we tore the Roofer's Buggy apart and fixed several areas of it AND told them them what they did wrong. Sure enough the new part arrived with the same fix we had in mind...

His method however is to be somewhat destructive. TRUE "Creative Destruction", if you will. I could not tell you how many times I've tried to slow him down and found out it did not matter. He is more than capable of putting it all back together. So I back off. It works.

Ultimately he's not an "on the surface" , "don't you feel good about hiring me" Onionhead Roofer that dominates our trade. The man DIGS IN and gets to the core of whatever the problem is. We both do. And sometimes we argue and fight about it. And he usually holds sway 2/3 of the time as he is doing the work.

When the client actually sees what he does they are not "happy" they hired us. They are Ecstatic.

So yeah egg you riled me up! The man has earned my defenses. No big deal. I hope you get to feeling better. It happens. it's one photo

I did a repair yesterday on a roof the landlords brother roofed 6 years ago. Under the valley overhangs from the garage to house connection you could see felt paper below the eave fascia! Although it was like this for 6 years with just felt and osb there was no damage to the osb. The water got in and just went right into attic and leaked near the front door area.

The odd thing was I counted 3 layers of ice and water in the valley but nothing under the valley were it counts. We popped out a soffit panel and took two full shingles out from the original roof!

Although the two valleys were 2ft and 3ft the previous guy just ran the shingles up and over the valley and didn't ridge the final 3ft.

BTW, it was an insurance claim 6 years ago.

  Twill,

By the looks of the pic although ice and water was used no ice and water or shingles were run under the valley detail?

We see this all the time and similiar to the above mentioned repair.

We did one like this last year and you could have fallen through the decking. That repair set the homeowner back $850.

I can understand ice shield on the entire roof more than I can understand doing what most manufacturers spec. That is, ice shield around skylights and dormers that (in the case of comp) dump over 15 lb felt. That isn't leak prevention, that's leak relocation.

someone in the tread was commenting about osb. now that its been around awhile and ive torn some off of osb i think i perfer it. yes it falls apart with long term exposure to moisture but isint the idea of a roof to prevent that? overall it seems less decking needs to be replaced with osb vs cdx. at least in my experience

Most of that doesn`t have to do with the actual roof leaking,,but the heat loss making condensation under the roof.

With a poorly insulated house,,next they`ll want vapor retarders on shingle roofs too,As they like to blame the roofer when they don`t understand the actual problem
