I think we're going to run across this more & more.

We're somewhat protectd out west, here, as the climate is generall dry. However we've already experienced issues in "wet" years".

To ad to it, the typical structure is not vented properly, so, when it get's sealed up, it just enhances the entrapped moisture.

Allthough, by the photo, this appeaers to be a roofing issue(?) i.e., no flashing evident?. It may also reflect the general mind-set, that simply installing I&W negates the need for applicable roofing techniques/skills.

The very first issue here is the OSB. The major disadvantage of OSB is that if it gets exposed to significant amounts of water the edges expand by up to 15%. . .especially if they are cut edges. This swell will then telegraph onto the shingles. When plywood gets wet, it expands evenly throughout the panel, dries more quickly and shrinks down to its original size more rapidly than OSB. The expansion of the decking well cause the Ice and Water to separate. Then the roofing application .... questionable from the pics.

Of course since the "Roofers" nowadays just rip 'n replace shingles as per "FREE ROOFS" specs, WHO FRIGGIN' CARES ANYWAY?

We have absolutely trained the customer not to care.
So why ventilate?

Blame the OSB! Brilliant!
Let's make guns illegal too.....after all it is the guns fault! They shoot themselves!

I luv ya Chuck man, but you got to stop being an Insurance Industry Lackey

twill twill. The best part of being friends you can be totally stupid and still be accepted.
Accepting the way something seems and not what's actually possible. Unable to see what is right in front of you because of pre-existing thoughts or ideas you may have.
You may be either totaly oblivious to the facts or blatantly misunderstanding my reply. No worries.

And of course plywood NEVER delaminated. And there was never Mold or Dry rot on plank boards.

Do you understand my reply?

I've gone on a leak repair and found 2-4 layers of the stuff. I've torn it all out and gone back over the wood with the roof if I ran out of felt. Mine didn't leak.

Oh Tom. Something else I've found is leaking if a butt joint was below the valley. Now, I adjust so there are no joints below, even if I have to dutch-lap a course or two.

Is the Ice Shield what I see lapping over the rake framing? Notice I didn't call it Grace's trade name, it isn't Ice and Water Shield. Just as I don't like bidding against someone who uses the name "generically" and substitutes something cheaper, it's unfair to use it generically here to cast blame for failure.

If that's the Ice Shield lapped over the rake board, it would trap any water running down the rake board and it's directly above where the worst of the damage is.

well ya it's osb.... if there was water accumalaion in that area prior, then there is going to be delamination...

  To Eliminate any possible confusion:

The rake board has an aluminum fascia cap that was removed during this process.

I don't think the "blame" is the I&W, (yes, I use the term I&W generically, as they all have performed as intended per my 30+ yrs experience/thousands of roofs).

The "blame" I believe is cast toward the idiot mentallty these days of the masses, that I&W is a cure-all, or somehow implies superior installtion of a roof system, whereas in reality, has birthed a generation of well intended, but missinformed/unkowledgable applicators, as well as specifiers. JMHO & 1.5 cents

Good point TomB. That is the issue. I was waiting for somebody to comment on the 1/2 shingle just below and to the right of the roofer's foot. That shingle proves your point.
