What does your contract say? Is there something about "gratitude" in it? Are you talking about a tip or thanks?

OS, what I interpreted was A roof done to traditional standard for shingle and copper, for cost, then bigshot has the gall to question the bill as opposed to saying,,, " my God boy,I'm so sorry I didn't give you the equal in payment service you gave me in consumer gratitude".
I'm with homeboy, skippy should have been as gracious with cut rate payment, give as good as he got.
Pray he builds another house and ask your roof it. Then put A bunch of illegals on it, then ask him,,, " how you like me now"?

1st of all he is not a customer. You did it for free.....or less. He is a friend. Or was.

2nd why do this dumb sh*t? Some roofer lost some good work. Oh I forgot.....roofers function on egos.

3rd Why does a guy building a $1.5 mil house need a free roof anyway???????????????????

My experience in business has shown that the more money I make on a job the happier the customer is and is easier to work for.
Don't know why, but it's been true

Figuring out the psychology is at least as hard as doing the job.
But after all is said and done it's probably the most important part.
Can't know what's going on from here; lots of different ways to figure it.
Some people just don't do grateful and can't.

I will gladly pay you tommorrow for a hamburger today!

It's a fact jack: You must get paid for the work you do today. There is no promise, or guarantee, that there will be any future benefit, employment or contract tommorrow.

I totally understand...We do freebies every now & then....But it''s typically for the elderly/hardship cases.

Had an old fella, who I fell for the sob-story, just a couple of months ago, who, subsequently, called up and said he was "getting bids", after we had an agreement, (I had provided him a price based on 1/2 the shingles coming form my yard, at no costs, as well as charging only direct labor costs only. It was actually COSTING me money to have my guys haul the shingles from our yard to his place).

I wanted to say; Well, piss on you....But I didn't, we just put his roof on anyway. He never made mention or thanked us, for saving him $5,000 +/-.

Next time you do charity work do it for a single mom or a disabled grandma not for a guy who's building a $1.5 mil house. What the hell were you thinking?

Way back in the day I thought I knew everything. I am convinced now that I don't even know the questions, let alone the answers. Don't feel like the lone "stranger"

If this guy hadn't sent you any work in a year(and now out of the business) and the prospects don't look good with the son, why would you decide to do something at cost for this guy? It has to be reciprocal BEFORE you make these decisions and they can't be of this magnitude. Unless he's going to build your new house for costs.
What were you looking for? a mere "thank you". In this economy? You must have tons of work to be able to do thank you jobs.
Was there at least a carrot(future work) dangling out there?
I don't mean to rip you but it was a bad business decision, even in a good economy, unless you're bartering. Then he still owes you..
I agree with Tico and Alba.
and twill makes alot of cents, spelled the other way.
