twice in one day

Ha wasn't me

I finished any torching or asphalt melting work weeks ago, been painting this week.
Had to down tools twice, and evacuate the building.
Both false alarms.

Thats gonna cost the building owners $2400

The Fire Service charges $1200 per callout, you get one free call out per year, this is the 2nd and 3rd callout since the renovation work started in Dec 2009.
First one was before I got there, the Painters were cutting off the cement sheeting at the bottom of the balcony/walkway fences so we could paint the asphalt decks through, they didn't have any dust collection system set up and someone from nearby seen the clouds of dust and thought it was a fire and called them down.

When I was torching and using my asphalt pot to melt the asphalt I phoned Fire Communications every morning I lit up, let them know what level I was at in case the steam from the melting asphalt was mistaken for a fire. They were most appreciative that I did that.
All I was thinking of was the $1200 charge for a callout

I probably only lost half an hour due to the evacuation, the first callout I was sitting in my truck in the carpark having lunch.

The cause still undetermined, there were 3 flashing lights on the electronic Building FireBoard the first time, then only Apartment 7 only the 2nd time. One of the Firemen said the guy in there wouldn't open the door at first, got quite aggressive.

There were only half a dozen people who evacuated, I'm sure there were more than that in the building, I seen 2 people walk by on the level I was on visiting one apartment, never seen them on the ground during the evac.
Would just make it harder for the Firemen if there was a real fire.

At least they showed up. Do they still charge for the 'call out" if there is a fire?

I doubt it OS, us taxpayers pay for them to put out a real fire, but they will charge if it is deliberate and can be proven.
I've only had them come to one of my jobs once, we were doing the basement of the Art Gallery and I had 2 guys with burners drying out the floor so that I could put down some sheathing felt and lay some Mastic Asphalt, the heat was too much for the ceiling sprinklers and they went off, and so did the alarms
luckily the building was totally gutted at the time for renovations so the only damage was the situation of having more water on the floor than before
That was my freebie for that year, haven't had them come near me since, that was 1996.
Most of the older Fire guys know who I am, I did the roof on the Central City Fire Station in 1990, it was a Ruberoid 4mm torchon overlay over the original BUR smooth finish painted.

FWIW I did the roof under the small complex surrounded by the white fence too, its a Creche/Kindergarten on top and a carpark garage underneath.
The upstands were about 3ft high and it was laid as a Garden Roof.
