Milcor Heat & Smoke Vents Receive Unusually High Wind Uplift Approval from Factory Mutual

Carol Stream, Ill. - Milco's galvanized steel Low Profile U-LP, BIG SMOKY(r), STC-40, and STC-45 Heat & Smoke Vents were recently tested by FM Global for compliance with FM Approvals Standard 4430 (04/07) for Heat and Smoke Vents. These heat and smoke vents are generally used in large public auditoriums and schools for protection of the public. They are designed to open automatically in the event of excessive heat created by a fire or in conjunction with wired alarm systems to release trapped smoke to prevent deaths from smoke inhalation and to allow easier vision for fire crews. The lids must be able to open quickly and easily, yet remain closed in high winds which could create a suction effect which tries to force the lids open. Testing by FM Global showed that the lids were able to withstand a simulated wind uplift of 240 pounds per square foot.

In addition, impact tests were subjected to the lid of the largest heat and smoke vent submitted for testing- one which was 72" x 144" long.  A 100 lb bag 12" in diameter was dropped from 4' above the lid multiple times with no damage to the heat and smoke vent.
